Should Sparta Be An Ideal Home?

Sparta was a very unique society which could be defined as Utopian Militaristic State. Spartan boys all were devoted their entire lives from an early age to the Spartan army. This heavily militarist society was also unique in terms of women's position in society. They had much more rights and freedoms than other Greek women, but in terms of family life they were not so lucky. Women were living separately from spouse during their whole lives. Their husbands were only coming to home at night, they were secretly removed after a short time. And also they were separated from their sons for military training. Women had to be strong in family and social life. Spartan lawgivers wanted girls to receive a good education in order to prepare them to their womanhood duties.

Sparta was a small culture both in size and number that eventually revolutionized into a powerful city-state. It is located on a small peninsula in Southern Greece called the Peloponnese. Sparta was based on its strong military that helped it continue to be dominate even with a small population. The education in Sparta helped develop this culture to its dominant state. Did the education system serve the overall best interest of the Spartan people? The education in Sparta did serve the best interest of the Spartan people because their education prepared them for their future, the rigorous military training taught the boys how to adapt to limited resources, and their education also helped them defeat the helots.

Sparta was one of the most well known city states in ancient Greece. Sparta focused on producing good soldiers. Every male citizen was apart of the Spartan army. Unhealthy babies were not accepted in Sparta if you were unhealthy they would be left to die at the Apothetae, a chasm by Mount Taygetus. If you were male at 7 years old you were to join the agoge, the states educational program. Spartan mothers would say “Son either with this or on this. They were referring to there shield as they would rather have there son die than come home defeated. They would live in the barracks with the other Spartan boys until they become 30. From 7 to 11 you get taught reading, writing, music and dancing, but there teachers are most concerned about physical improvement. Life was hard for them; there daily physical training included being barefoot and having only one piece of clothing. They would do this no matter what the weather was. Also there was never enough food but teachers encouraged students to steal food, if you got caught you would get in trouble not for stealing

Sparta was ruthless. Their army ruled over all others. Sparta a very violent civilization. They had the krypteria who would go out and murder the helots. Although Sparta had a superior army, the weaknesses of Sparta still outweigh the strengths because they were lacking in education, they were very abusive, and they provided the boys with an awfully unfair amount of supplies.

Sparta is the strongest Greek city-state because of their military , society , and education. The spartan produced what is probably the most iconic military in ancient history. The ancient Spartan warriors are known for their bravery , professionalism and skill, a reputation well deserved. The Spartan army was known far and wide for their fierceness , brutality, and efficiency in battle . This was partly due to their militarily-oriented society, but it was also due to a remarkable innovation in land warfare that made the Spartans nearly unstoppable on the ground.

In my opinion, I believe neither one is better and they are both different. I thinks Athens would be better to inhabit if you were a citizen of it but not if you were a women. In Sparta it would be better to be a women in Sparta rather than Athens. The only downfall for men in Sparta is you have to be in the army but back then in Sparta you wanted to be a great soldier. I would live in Sparta because as a girl, I would have a better life. But I would refuse to own slaves and participate in the wars they fought. Spartan women were more likely to be seen out in public as much as men. They were allowed to play sports as they believed women who did could be a better mother figure because it helped them remain healthy. Women from Sparta were as well allowed to socialize with other men although it wasn’t highly encouraged it wasn’t frowned upon either. They were treated as equally as men since birth which is why they had more of a public life than the women from Athens.

Athens and Sparta had many aspects to their culture, and they all contributed to the success both city-states had. If I could time travel back to the past I would prefer living in Sparta, due to their treatment and expectations they held for women. For example, when the Sparta men went to war the women had to look after their husbands property. This included guarding the land from invaders and revolts from slaves. They were also allowed to remarry if their spouse was away at war to long. On the other hand the women in Athens were not even able to choose who they would be married to, and to make matters worse for the women of Athens they would be married at age fifteen. Though Athens and Sparta were both city-states in Ancient Greece, Athens was the better city-state, because of certain things such as: the quality of a school, how they were treated, and the way they built their city. Athens’ government is superior to that of Sparta. Looking at this feature is important because government was very important to the Athens. Some people disagree; saying that government in Athens was terrible. They say this because they are trying to support Sparta’s side.

I can say it dos surprise me in how women’s opportunities in Sparta women were traded better and women were more value in one way with more freedom, right, and education even Spartan women were known to do sports. We can see Spartan were know to be a strong culture with warrior husband that protect and fight for them self’s, and women mother, and wife for these incredible warriors. I can say Athenian democracy were very hard with their people including with their women’s, by taking their wife their freedom, and educations. I do believed Spartan culture were better than Athenian democracy, in both cultures men were the ones who dominate and control, but just Athenian democracy had this roles of controlling women, and Spartan women had more freedom.

Choosing the right place will probably depend on you and your family’s lifestyle and values. Athens have more democratic values, while Sparta, they have more militaristic values. Athens believe participating in government a civic responsibility. While Sparta of course believes in participating in the military a mandatory. I believe that Sparta would be a better place to live as a teen male slave than Athens. Three reasons that I would live in Sparta rather than Athens are that I can buy my freedom, I can sell leftover crops and if I act weak I would have an easier job to live with and not as likely to die.
