There are many different positions that are held in society today regarding certain sexual orientations and activities. These issues include premarital sexual activity, masturbation, and the most debated, homosexual orientation and behavior. The opinions that people hold on these topics are likely to be influenced by several factors. The more common of these factors would be religious background and affiliation. In order to gain information regarding how certain religious organizations feel about certain sexual orientations and activities, I looked to my church to see the positions held on each of these issues. My church is Emmanuel Christian Fellowship and it is non-denominational. I have been going to this church for almost ten years. Because of this I knew many of the positions that my church has on these issues because of prior knowledge. This prior knowledge regarding these issues comes from previous sermons and messages that my pastor has shared with the congregation throughout my ten-year time span of being there. However, I still asked about the positions held and was able to find definite information by asking the minister at my church. After being provided with all of the information on each of these issues, I found that my church disagrees with all of the issues of premarital sexual activity, masturbation, …show more content…
This is because sexual activities are supposed to occur between a married man and woman. My church also disagrees that masturbation is wrong because it does not promote reproduction. One of the reasons for God’s creation of sex is for reproduction. Because reproduction cannot occur through masturbation, it is going against the reasons for why God created sex. Finally, participating in the act of masturbation means that a person has acted upon immoral thoughts or desires that one has about sex. This is another reason for why my church considers masturbation to be a
The topic of sexual orientation is both sensitive and controversial. This is evident in events, such as the Pride Parade, and also in media, where authoritative figures preach against it and speak of its “sinful nature” (Emmanuele, Blanchard, Camperio-Ciani, & Bancroft, 2010). Sexual orientation exists in various forms, it differs in the way it is viewed by different cultures, and researchers propose different perspectives to explain the emergence of an individual 's sexual orientation. In the discourse of sexual orientation,
What was confusing for me, was starting to go to church with my family at the age of fourteen, but still witnessing my father’s sexual expression not change. From what I was being taught about the Bible, sex or sexual issues were only appropriate in marriage between a man and woman. The male was the leader of
This idea is not stated in the Bible; rather, it is established by how we interact with others in our reality. The logic of godly sex demonstrates traditional beliefs about gender and sexuality while trying to understand contemporary sexual identities, practices, and desires; one main component of this is the ability to have "good" sex, which means approved by God and satisfactory (Burke 2016: 33). For evangelical Christians, only married, monogamous, heterosexual couples are allowed to have sex. Many website creators and users have used the logic of godly sex to justify creating and using Christian websites that discuss sex. Individuals decide what is godly and what is not though discussion with others; these ideas can be interpreted differently among individuals who have established themselves as evangelical Christians and is oftentimes negotiated among them through dialogue; they have used existing beliefs to construct new sexual logic.
To start with, let's take a type of religion, christianity, and the United States’s society and see how their views of sex are. Since the christian religion is large , I will narrow it down to my christianity, Baptist, in order to avoid conflict with other christian
Homosexuality is defined or characterized as attraction towards the same gender either male or female. It came from the Greek language, where “homo” means the same or similar, hence referring to the attraction between two beings of the same sex. Homosexuality is also referred as a clinical term. Most male homosexuals generally prefer to be called "gay men" and most homosexual women generally prefer to be called "lesbians." Homosexuality is one of the three main categories of sexual orientation, alongside bisexual and heterosexual. The longstanding consensus of the behavioral and social sciences and the health and mental health professions is that homosexuality is an example of normal and positive variation in human sexual
Most people that don’t even go to church see it as a sin, while those who attend church didn’t really see it as wrong, Ian Lovett decided to address the fact and said “It allows freedom”, but the real question is how does it allow freedom? , Ian continued on to say that everyone should have a choice.
We live in a society today that tolerates and accepts many things Catholics would classify as “gravely sinful” or “morally wrong”. The act of fornification and homosexual acts are both mortal sins that most Catholics commit. At a very young age, the principle of marital sex between a husband and wife is instilled into the minds of children. Growing up in a religious home, I was taught that sex is an important and sacred matter that only married couples could partake in. Like many others, I rejected and frowned upon pre-marital sex. However, after reading an article about a person’s experiences, I finally understood that no one should dictate your life – specifically, what you do with your body.
The first is the fact that it is stated in the Bible as "an abomination", and it is something the Church cannot change since God 's word is perfect. A popular passage is: "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable." (Leviticus 18:22) There
I believe teachers innately assume a corrective role in their interaction with students who exhibit gay or lesbian tendencies. Teachers are so accustomed to assuming roles and wearing various hats when dealing with their students. Teachers spend countless hours helping students learn to problem solve. Gay and lesbian tendencies are view as a problem especially in the elementary school years when students are at their purest and are naïve about the world and its expectations of them. In a teacher’s eyes boys should be playful, rough, and tough. Girls should be cute, prissy, and giggly. When teachers encounter children who are outside of their assumed roles they automatically try to correct them by saying things: “little girls/boys shouldn’t behave that way or little boys/girls shouldn’t walk like that or wear their clothes like that.” Teachers unconsciously and some consciously, devote a great deal of time trying to correct those undesired tendencies, which often leads to embarrassment or berating of the student(s). How teachers interact with these students is an area that needs to be explored.
It is a general consensus that traditional or conservative religions, such as Orthodox Jews, Conservative Christians, and Catholics, view masturbation as a sin or immoral. Whereas the more liberal, more reformed, religions view masturbation as a normal, natural, and healthy sexual action. Society is very much the same way with their perspective. While some people think that masturbation is normal and do not have a problem talking about. There are other people who are more reluctant to talk about their sexuality and
All the feelings resulting from the urge to indulge in sexual impulses is virtually in everyone, as advertisements from burgers to any automobile can inform you. Along with that, the desire to glorify a divine being resonates within many as well. In early Abrahamic faiths, sex was commemorated as a source of holiness and sanctification when used in a proper manner. These proper manners consist of three points: 1. Only between man and woman (condemns homosexual partnerships) 2. The transmission of human life (condemns contraceptives) and 3. Solely within a lawful marriage. Therefore, it would be a struggle and somewhat contradicting to attempt in separating religion from sex. Christian fundamentalists argue that the act of sexual intercourse outside or before a marriage is considered to be unethical and morally wrong, with that they claim sexual acts are only to be carried out as a means for procreation, not pleasure. Religion has always played a significant role in what is deemed right or wrong pertaining to sexual acts, and although many may claim that revolutionary change has come within the church’s dealing on sexual morality, the Catholic church still strongly holds most of its traditional values.
Sexuality can be interpreted in many ways through our upbringing, culture, and our personal choices. In today’s world, there is variation in sexuality that allows people to accept various sexual practices as moral behavior. People exercise their democratic rights to engage in all forms of sexual practices. Sexuality in my view is reflected upon Biblical values that states sexual practices must be within marriage between a man and woman. With that said my religious reviews contradicts the ideas of sexual diversity. Nevertheless, the works of Alfred C. Kinsey, C.J Pascoe, Lisa L. Diamond, John Corvino and Nicholas M. Teich points out the beauty of sexual fluidity, and challenge heteronormativity because it limits sexual freedom. Furthermore,
The world has come very far with all the dramatic changes we have faced over the years. Wouldn’t you agree? As much change as the world has been through there are still numerous social problems that still exist in society today. Amongst those numerous social problems, sexual orientation and inequality stand out to me. Research from biology, psychology, and sociology is where our understanding of sexual orientation comes from. There are two hypothetical theories researchers have discovered examining the biological basis toward sexual orientation. One concept is the neurohormonal theory, biologist contend that homosexuality is caused by abnormal sex hormone levels in utero. The alternative theory is based on behavioral genetics, determining the source and magnitude of genetic impact on sexual orientation. This theory suggested the concept that gay men were genetically female. Later this theory was proven to be false. Homosexuality was considered as a pathology or mental illness. Not every psychologists agreed with that perspective. A researcher by the name of Havelock Ellis stated that homosexuality was congenital and for that reason it could not be considered as a disease. Sigmund Freud another theorist had the concept that everyone is born bisexual and that either homosexuality or heterosexuality is developed through social and personal experience. Ellis and Freud both concurred that homosexuality was not a mental illness. Despite these researchers’ opinions in 1973,
The idea that is still taught in some churches today is that the Christian sexual ethic came to earth fully formed, straight from heaven, about 2,000 years ago. Throughout all that time, there was exactly one way for Christians to express their sexuality — by staying abstinent until they got married to a person of the opposite gender. And then, you could have at it all you wanted.
Sexual ethics issues such as adultery and homosexuality cause a lot of different types of responses due to different interpretation and understanding of the sources of ethical teachings. Many Christians would take the ethical positions that adultery and homosexuality is wrong and unforgiveable because of statements in the bible such as, “You shall not commit adultery.” (Exodus 20:14) and “Do not lie with a man as
