As the student affairs profession develops, it is important to remain aware of how students and their identities are evolving. Higher education is constantly evolving, which is why it is extremely important to take sexual orientation identity and its influence on student development into account. In this paper, I will explore Fassinger’s (1998) sexual orientation identity model and provide an analysis of the theory. I will also share my findings from three interviews with students who are in different stages of sexual identity formation. Finally, I will address how knowledge of Fassinger’s Model and sexual identity development can inform the work of student affairs educators in creating more inclusive college and university environments.
Homosexuality is defined or characterized as attraction towards the same gender either male or female. It came from the Greek language, where “homo” means the same or similar, hence referring to the attraction between two beings of the same sex. Homosexuality is also referred as a clinical term. Most male homosexuals generally prefer to be called "gay men" and most homosexual women generally prefer to be called "lesbians." Homosexuality is one of the three main categories of sexual orientation, alongside bisexual and heterosexual. The longstanding consensus of the behavioral and social sciences and the health and mental health professions is that homosexuality is an example of normal and positive variation in human sexual
Typically sex arrangements were tested by ladies who felt they denied of equivalent lawful treatment, yet they were additionally tested by men who felt ladies were given uncalled for lawful insurance (Conley , 2013). Within the last decade society has become more open to ideology and lifestyles that years ago were tabo. This is largely due to the fact that the millennial generation may be one of the most laid back and accepting generations of all time. One major lifestyle that was rarely expected was homosexuality within the last decade this issue is no longer in the closet. Most people feel comfortable being open about their lifestyle choice and even show it off. Shortly after the acceptance of gays by society a new issue presented itself and this is transgender people. The community as whole fights for their rights together and it is referred to as LGBTQ. LGBTQ means lesbians, gays, transgender, bisexual, and queer. The LGBTQ community has made great progress in the last decade they have become more open about their community and have gained rights that they should have always had. Even though the community has made progress they still have a long way way to go especially within the workplace.

Like everyone else when I signed up, I had no clue what I was getting into, and to be completely honest I thought the course would be a breeze. Although there was not a ton of homework the in-class discussions and reflection groups were sometimes pretty challenging to be a part of. I found an environment where there was no need to lie or nonsense an answer just to get a grade. It was maybe the first time in a college course where I felt comfortable not having to make sure I had the “right” answer. This was especially true of our reflection group where a couple of college students who were more or less strangers to each other were thrown together and became incredibly close after just a few
This chapter was definitely an interesting one for me. I’ve always considered sexual orientation to be a topic that comes up and is something that just middle or high school teachers deal with. It wasn’t until reading the part in this chapter about the elementary teacher hosting parents’ night and the two mothers showing up to hear how their child was doing that I realized it was something that elementary teachers deal with as well. The more I thought about it, elementary teachers could even have it a little more tough than middle or high school teachers because young children don’t hold back much, they say exactly what they are thinking and have questioning minds concerning all subject matters. Sexual orientation has become quite a large topic
The first outcome that I felt the most personal growth in was outcome number nine. This outcome is stated as, “Enhance your personal life by formulating a Personal Sexual Policy – an ethical/moral foundation for making decisions regarding an individual’s sexual rights and expectations.” I felt the overall focus in the class gave me the opportunity to explore and learn new ideas and perspectives on sexuality. While my personal outlook on my own sexuality remained unchanged, I did gain knowledge about the other views of sexuality. I feel this experience will help me as I look for significant other to settle down with and raise a family. For example, I’ll be able to except her views on sexuality and when we engage in sexuality related conversations
This class has been one of the most memorable courses I have taken at Pacific Oaks. This course allowed me to learn not only from the material covered but also how my classmates relate to the world in centered on their own adversities. This class has changed my perspective because it highlighted the reality that not only people of color face bias because of their ethnicities. This course allowed all us the opportunity to express our experiences in a safe place
