Low funding in performing arts affects many schools around the country. I believe that performing arts helps people stay in school and not dropping out like many people from past generations. Speaking from experience I do not think I would have stayed in school by choice without my passion to participate in band. After watching the short film “The Middle School Moment,” and hearing the research finding of Dr. Robert Balfanz, took me by surprise on how serious the issue about kids dropping out is. I found it shocking in discovering that about 7,000 students dropped out of school everyday. Not only that but the fact that their personal lives and society play a huge role in their decisions, which schools tend to ignore. Another thing that I found interesting about the video was the prevention program that was adopted by Middle School 244 in the Bronx, and how it gave struggling students like Omarina Cabrera, the opportunity to continue their education after having issues preventing them from getting a proper education.

Public education is under funded, especially in the state of Alabama. I attended public school in the state of Alabama and I experienced this first hand in my elementary and high school classrooms. Low funds for the arts department and many basic school necessities are just some of the areas that are affected by the low funding. School districts have to find ways to hire knowledgeable and committed teachers. One way to draw the knowledgeable teacher is to offer stipends for teacher shortage areas and sign on bonuses. Districts must continue to offer some type of incentives to maintain good teachers. Teacher tenure is another great incentive but can sometimes cause good teachers to become too laidback. Tenure grants educators “a right, term, or mode of holding or occupying something of value for a period of time.” (Tenure) Basically, tenure in the education realm grants what some would call stability or even security.

Educational funding for school districts is an ongoing war. A war that will be fought till equality is achieved. A school district’s wealth is affected by a number of reasons such as its property wealth, the race of the people who live there and their socio-economic status. Some districts are wealthier than others. Wealthy districts get more funding than poor districts because they have more property wealth and people with high socio-economic statuses. The wealth of a school district determines how much resources the school gets and just how much education the children in that district receive.

In a world for teenagers, there is high school. Attending these high schools are millions of students who are all so diverse. There are countless factors that may be the cause of this epidemic, but a few ideas including making learning more relevant, limiting the workload given to students, and providing mandatory classes on drugs and safe sex may possibly be a solution to this

The various differences between junior high and high school are astounding. Transitioning from junior high to high school, requires students to reach a completely different level of maturity and responsibility. In junior high, poor actions didn’t have severe consequences, whereas, in high school, consequences can be a detrimental as being suspended from school. Also, middle school requires substantially less responsibility than high school; in middle school, there are no repercussions for turning assignments in late. In comparison to high school, all late assignments result in a specific percentage deduction from your earned score. Another difference between junior high and high school is the amount of time spent on and the difficulty level of homework. Junior high assignments were much more straightforward than high school assignments. High school is much more difficult and demanding than junior high. Overall, junior high does not adequately prepare students for high school.
