The ethos and mission of a school are often referred to hand-in-hand as the same thing. They are however, different. The mission is based upon what the school intend to achieve in a more physical and academical way, whereas the ethos is more related to the beliefs and feelings of the school.   As they are inextricable linked to the holistic teaching approach they become part of most school mission statements as one.

Every school is unique. The influence by which teaching and learning transpires has an impact on the processes and procedures in which the school makes decisions about curriculum, instruction, and assessment. This influence impacts the way a school remains faithful to its vision. Many factors, including the identification of stakeholders, stakeholder engagement, other issues affecting the school, and the programs and services that a school uses to support student learning.

My case study begins with my search for the school’s mission and vision statements. The mission statement is the most essential part of an organization. It must be simple, clear and well-crafted message suggesting the essence of who we are, what we do and why we do it. In other words, the mission statement is the purpose of the organization which should capture the attention of your target market by standing out above all others in similar organizations. I started this case study assignment seeking the mission statement for Greenland Pines Elementary in the Duval County Schools District. First, I searched the Internet for the school’s website for information regarding school’s mission statement. The purpose of this search is to find evidence of the existence of the mission and vision statement. On the website, I found that this school had the vision and mission combined. Greenland Pines Elementary Mission/Vision Statement reads as follows:

Goal 4: The development of a clear commitment to maintain ethical and functional working relationships with all members of the educational community; and

Their vision statement is to prepare all students to meet the academic, creative, and social challenges and responsibilities of our society. Their mission statement is to provide the students with learning environments that are safe and conducive to learning, and to embrace school and community partnership. The core values and beliefs of the school is that every individual is entitled to an emotionally and physically safe and respectful learning environment. There are many ways of communicating ethos, mission aims and values. However the best way to communicate this is by ensuring us as adults display the behaviours we want to see, we must be kind and considerate, as this is the behaviour the children will follow. They can also be communicated via the written word, through reports, letters and the school prospectus. As long as this information is readily available it can be a very effective way of communicating the above, as it means that they are always on hand to refer back to.
