Satire In South Park

Satire reflects in different ways on our society today. While satire was all over back then today we mainly see it in political cartoons and on television. On television there are show such as the Colbert Report and John Oliver who relay "news reports" to viewers. They are poking fun at the news going in the world today. One of the biggest shows of Satire is SNL. Most recently they have had "Trump" on and have been making fun of presidential career thus far. In today's society the big butt and boobs are the goal for many up and coming stars. For television hosts this gives a chance for them to make parody's of them. Satire is a kind of writing that ridicules human weaknesses, vice, or folly in order to bring about social reform. Satires often try to persuade readers to do or believe something by showing opposite view as absurd or vicious and inhumane.

So I watched an episode of South Park recently and that got me thinking, how is something as offensive as this be all right to be put onto national television without angering hundreds and thousands of people? For those of you that don’t know what South Park is, it’s basically an animated sitcom series that has attracted huge hordes of followers ever since it first aired in 1997. It’s quite famous along side shows such as Family Guy, American Dad and Futurama which all seem to focus along the lines of shocking plots, their critical outlook on celebrities criticism and false depiction of religion and politics. This, of course, led to many complaints from the audience about how some of the episodes that have been broadcasted seem to really offend

This TV series was inspired by comic books. All good TV series have their crutch that makes them brilliant, be they the dynamic between Mulder and Scully, the surreal feeling of grounding in the Sopranos, to the intricate science of CSI. This TV show took the risk of using Movie-style action scenes, which is risky because it is often very expensive if you want to make it look good. Considering the fact they had a TV budget, they have done a good job.

Satire plays a huge role in shaping the behavior in the audience. Satire keeps the working entertaining more most readers. Everthing doesnt have to neccesarily be serious. Satire is something that most definitely needs to be altered at given times. The Main message can most definetly be distorted if the audience is stuck on the humor and not the message. Thats why the satire has to tie in with the message so the reader can interpret and know what is going on. Also its easy to get caught up in the satire and not the message. South Park began airing in 1997. The commercials that preceded it gave the impression of it being another stupid cartoon; however, when I began watching, I realized important issues were being covered through the repeated behaviors and actions of its characters, through the influences these actions could have on the viewers, through the reinforcement and rejections of certain stereotypes, through the long-term effects that could result from watching the program, and through its reflection of social reality.

South Park turns important political ideologies regarding race, gender and sexuality into a spectacle, desensitizing its viewers to the social injustices the show raises, marginalizing and trivializing minorities and ultimately, contributing to outrage culture. But before the viewer has time to process the political incorrectness of the show, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the writers of South Park have made a mockery of the scene dousing the potential outrage and placating the viewer’s opposition. Yet although a handful of viewers observe South Park intellectually the remaining majority does not. In theory South Park is a cleverly planned out show meant to raise awareness to the ignorance of people through satire. However, South Park deconstructs satire, and in turn employs the use of pseudo-satire. Further

Beyond the humor, satire can foreshadow many aspect of the issues that are currently happening in the modern society. Humans see satire as a form of perception, and within that perception is irony, humor, and exaggeration of many events currently happening. Furthermore, satire a tool to challenge and expose many popular ideas, and events.

It is clearly seen that satire is effective for change in society and creating awareness of the wrong and injustices. Satirists use literary devices such as metaphors, sarcasm, and verbal irony to expose the ill. Within its layers, it holds deep and sincere meanings that are full of sadness. When ignorance and unconcern overrule a person, corrupt ways and thoughts are produced. Satire is used to uncover these people and create a change in thoughts and actions of individuals. The clever use of popular culture, humor, and much more appeal to people and conveys the deeper meaning within. Satires use sarcasm and irony to communicate to the society. Satirical movies or radio programmers’ are used (Coppola 57) to ridicule religion, politics and economic activities. Satires are intended to expose problems caused by cultural practices and its contradictions. Satire is applied to shame the government, individuals or society towards improving the social criticism. Satires provide keen insight into society’s power structure and the way it is misused by those in control (Ehrenberg 43).

Satire can be used in many ways, although it is not always done in a convincing manner. Only a knowledgeable and creative writer can influence people through this device. Satire often uses humor to show a current problem, and in most cases, it does not provide a solution but is the catalyst for it. Emotions on the topic are prompted and in turn the audience connects with the writer and the conflict at hand. Throughout history authors have wielded the literary devices of satire to convey a message; mockery, irony, overstatement, and understatement can be the most effective by shedding light on an issue in an unusual way.

Satire is loosely defined as art that ridicules a specific topic in order to provoke readers into changing their opinion of it. Animal Farm is a great political example of this.

Political satire and commentary in our society are topics that have been around for many years. Whether it was Shakespeare using comedy to explain a tragedy or Daniel Tosh just “saying it how it is” to make people laugh, political satire has always been controversial. Satire in the United States has consisted of pushing political boundaries to create change, inspiring action through humor and most importantly, developing ongoing conversations about real problems that the United States and the world are facing and fighting censorship in today’s culture.
