The DfES (2005) have emphasised in their current legislation that ‘safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the child’ which by definition is the process of protecting children from abuse or neglect, preventing impairment of their health and development.’ (DfES 2005a, p11). Firstly the most immediate action that needs to be taken is to set up good communication between mum and myself. The document ‘Every Child Matters: Change for Children’, supports the ‘combination of working with each other and with parents in improving the child’s wellbeing and quality of life.’ (Department of Education and Skills, 2004). There have been concerns regarding possible physical abuse with Eric. Eric often comes in to Preschool with bruising on his knees, I have recorded this on an incident form (incident form) each time this has happened. Eric’s mum acknowledges the bruises on his knees. This area is a common zone for accidental bruising (bruising patterns.) as children usually ‘damage their knees and shins, during falls’ (Protecting Children, Janet Kay p51) and it usually would not raise any suspicion regarding physical abuse. However Eric has most recently arrived at the setting with a bruise on his head and his mother has not given any plausible explanation for this. (Find percentage of abuse if bruised on the head.) I am going to refer back to all the previous accident and incident forms filled out by myself and take into consideration the time period between each occasion. I am also going to ask Eric how he obtained the bruise on his head using the T.E.D strategy, then I can asses whether this explanation matches the injury or not.
