STEM-Related Career Progression

Being raised in a very STEM-centric family, I began to realize the importance of STEM at an early age from spending time with my parents during school breaks. My mother is a professor of electrical engineering at Georgia Tech and my father is a civil engineer who works for Georgia Power. Over the years, I have grown particularly fascinated with the abstract side of electronics, including the creation of programming languages and applications, especially for mobile devices, and the creation of artificial intelligence. I see the potential for computer programs and artificial intelligence to help humanity solve many of its most complex problems in entertainment, communication, and everyday life, and I believe a degree in Computer Science would help me become a part of this

During the summer of my tenth grade year, I interned at Accenture, a consulting firm, where I repaired computers and resolved any software issues. At first I started opening and and exploring parts of retired dell laptops. As I became more proficient, I was able to help clients fix PC issues such as broken screens, replacing RAM, and transferring data from the hard drives to another computer. This internship inspired me to consider the Technology industry as a possible career. Taking into consideration the broad range of possible career paths in technology, I decided to major in Computer Science once I get to college.

As a part of the HBCU Alumni Alliance’s Higher Education initiative program; Alumni of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are concerned about the inadequate representation of minorities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related professions. Consequently, DCHBCUAA STEM professionals have designed and organized an instructional hands-on STEM workshop for students in grades 10-12, to enlighten them on the different facets of professions available in the sciences. As a part of our community partnership with Kaiser Permanente, we have a workshop scheduled for Saturday, April 29, 2017, from 800 am-5:00 pm, at 2101 Jefferson Street in Rockville, Maryland.

Next year, I plan to major in Computer Engineering and begin a career helping make the world a better place through innovative technology. I realized my talents for math and sciences during freshman year of high school, and remember the exact moment I knew engineering was meant for me. While exploring the engineering shop at my vocational technical high school, the teacher showed my class a video of MIT students designing prosthetic limbs for amputees. It was then that I realized I could use my love of math and science to really help people.

In Life there are roads and there are choices. The right or left turn you make along the winding path throughout your life is and should be the one that makes you happy. Furthering your education may be your best and only way to make that right decision. At the present moment I am now currently attending Valencia Community College working towards my Associate Degree in Computer Science. My current major is Computer Science, although Computer Engineering with a focus in Software is what I will most likely pursue as my Bachelor of Arts (BA). Because of the different applications that the computers can perform, I was very interested in computers, especially the idea of coding. I had zero knowledge of coding, but there is nothing that stopped me from learning how programs were created. It is intriguing because I saw many people on the news everyday able to create a new program that can advance the technology that humans currently have. I want to be someone who is able to create those programs to help the people improve their lives.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math courses are not well supported at EIS. EIS should support a wider curriculum for people that want to pursue a STEM related career. The implementation of new lab equipment and also new science related AP courses is necessary at EIS in order to improve in the STEM areas. After being a part of EIS for two years now, I have observed a deficit in its science and technology courses. Personally, I will engage in a science related career and I do not feel prepared for it. Many students are planning in engaging in a STEM career and courses such as AP Chemistry, AP Physics and AP Computer science need to be offered. I found it a wonderful experience to witness young people being passionate towards the same fields I love. I desire to work with computers, however I plan to collaborate with organizations that get people involved with real world applications of engineering.

I always enjoyed school, but in my adult years, I have come to recognize that I feel great excitement when placed in new situations where I can gain new knowledge – on any topic. I searched for a path that allowed me to always feel there was something new to learn, and with technology being an industry that is ever-changing and adapting to the world, I knew it wouldn’t disappoint me. There is an abundance of areas within technology that are brand new or not yet developed, so there are infinite possibilities to expand my knowledge and be the person who is actually creating the exciting technology I used to read about. This continues to be the most persistent barrier to women’s STEM participation because of the widespread misconception of the incompatibility of STEM careers with family or parenting roles. This difficulty of combining career and family roles creates unique and additional career planning and implementation challenges, and continues to be disproportionately experienced by women far more than men. The idea of “Having It All”, continuing career participation while simultaneously dealing with the challenges or burdens of family and parenting. In community college, I was intrigued by how computer science revolves around math and design. For example, when I took a Visual Basic course, I was introduced how to design a graphical user interface that interacts with the user and produce calculations as a back-end programmer. Moreover, I was fascinated because, as I advanced to the first series of Java course, I found that it took perseverance to understand the viewpoint of an end user to utilize Java programming language in order to execute the proper functionality of technology

My career choice is Biotechnology. It is a branch of science that deals with the exploitation and manipulation of biological processes for the benefit of mankind. My true passion for engineering began when I came across the quote: "Technology are devices that make our lives better". Despite my first love of mathematics, my recent interest for engineering has come from two major influences. The first being my mathematics and physics teachers, both engineers by nature, who have helped me enhance the fundamental skills essential for engineering and embrace the importance of the field. The second being the learning about uses of technology in Computer Science, it taught me the magnitude of which technology contributes to our everyday lives has led me to intensify my desire to improve the lives of others.
