Rubrics of psychological well-being and health, particularly within the United States, begins by theorizing a normative subject who is, so far, always possessive of the Euro-American, middle-class, male, cisgendered, heterosexual point of view. These rubrics, often in the form of personality assessment instruments, are not only characteristic of the West’s position as hegemon over social life, but also display an inability to see from any reference point besides the dominant culture’s standard of living (Lacey, 2004). Beginning with an idealized and, ultimately, fantastic image of the norm (of which no person truly obtains), these assessments then associate deviations from the normative social position as not simply natural deviations in …show more content…
In both trials, a score of 5 T points was considered clinically meaningful insofar as it has a medium to high effect (Cohen, 1988). Subjecting all groups to the MMPI-2 test, Lacey (2004) found that combined T scores found clinically significant deviations above the base score in 1Hs, 4Pd, 6Pa, 8Sc, and 9Ma. Of these, 8Sc and 9Ma were the most significant deviations from the norm (8Sc = 8.254, 9Ma = 8.936). Pace et at (2006) found significant differences in the same category. In particular, Lacey (2004) applied the Harris-Lingoes subscales and supplementary scales. Looking at the Harris-Lingoes subscales, combined scores found clinically meaningful deviations above the norm in Hy4, Pd2, Pd4, Pa1, Sc1, Sc3, Sc5, Sc6, and Ma4 (Lacey 2004). Of particular importance here is the multiple symptoms in the 8Sc group which suggest a clinically meaningful problem. Pace et al. (2006) finds that higher scores in 8Sc are correlated to lower acculturation which may suggest that traditional Native beliefs are, within the MPPI-2, characteristic of schizophrenia and, in general, psychosis. Furthermore, supplementary scales found clinically meaningful deviations above the norm in Mac-R, AAS, MDS, PK, and PS as well as clinically meaningful deviations below the norm in Es, Do and Re. Findings in the supplementary scales, however, speak more towards structural and behavioral discrimination against Native Americans rather than

In everyone’s life a little stress must fall. We all have to deal with daily hassles and various personal stressors that effect our emotional and physical health. The manner in which we deal with these stressors can alleviate or reduce stress or it can make things worse. Mind and body issues have bemused philosophers and psychologists since the ancient Greeks; however recently a new subfield in psychology has immerged to investigate the subject. Health psychology focuses on psychological factors and how they relate to wellness and illness. This would include
Psychological factors could influence a person’s mental wellbeing and these include learning difficulties and mental health illness such as depression which can cause more than just a low mood it can leave people feeling very sad, empty, hopeless or guilty for weeks, months or even years which could lead to suicide. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) which is an anxiety disorder which causes people to experience obsessive thoughts followed by compulsive behaviours. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which is triggered by events in a person’s life that involve real or threatened death, severe injury or sexual assault.
Over the years, many social scientists have offered a number of theories to explain personality trait and development. But while this debate continues, one aspect of personality development continues to engender a great deal of controversy: personality pathology. This area of concentration seems to have garnered more attention in recent years, as experts scramble to offer explanations and analysis for what appears to be a general decline in the moral fabric of American society, fueled by what appears to be a general coarsening of civility among certain segments of our population. Are more people simply being born with personality disorders that ultimately lead them down this path? Not so according to the basic principles of the
Trends that can be see are that countries that earn a higher income will most likely have a higher literacy rate, than a country that has low income which would have a lower literacy rate. This could be because countries that have a low GDP do not have enough funds to afford good education so that is why they would have a lower literacy rate.

Human beings are greatly restricted by sociocultural background. In individuals’ lives, they consciously or unconsciously share sociocultural assumptions about normal behavior and alternatively are restricted to these assumptions, by following the disciplines of their culture, raising their social caste based on social norms, and behaving properly according to their social surroundings. These assumptions about normal behavior contain not only sociocultural expectations of proper behavior, but also sociocultural morality and the law. During individuals’ growth, they pick up these assumptions from family members, schools, peers, public media, or other sources as an important knowledge of their culture and life. However, these assumptions are not absolutely right and can change along with time as well as cultural transformation. Ethan Watters in his essay “The Mega-Marketing of Depression”, mentions his research of the Japanese and other Asian countries’ understanding and acceptance of depression. He wonders why these countries are different from the United States when facing the problem of depression. In “Son”, Andrew Solomon describes his growth as a gay and talks about parental influence on children’s self-acceptance of own identity. And Karen Armstrong in her essay “Homo Religious”, points out that religion in effect is a cultural way that human beings try to understand their life from a transcendent direction. Three authors in their context imply how sociocultural
The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale created a 19-question survey to measure the student’s depressive symptoms within the in-home interviews associated within the Add Health Research (CES-D; Radloff, 1977). The questions observed a scale of depressive symptoms such as feeling lonely, feeling depressed, and feeling too tired to do things. The Add Health research established that overall participating student reported low levels of depressive symptoms between students with homosexual parents and heterosexual parents. Results of the Add Health research for depressive symptoms were M = 10.73, SD = 7.25, on a scale of 0 to 57, with higher scores indicating greater levels of depressive symptoms. Anxiety stood at M = 0.82, SD = 0.53, measured on a scale ranging from 0 to 28, higher scores indicating higher levels of anxiety. And results showed high levels of self-esteem at M = 4.02, SD = 0.53, on a scale from 6 to 30, higher scores indicating higher self-esteem (“Psychosocial Adjustment, School Outcomes, and Romantic Relationships of Adolescents With Same-Sex Parents”, 2004).
The insight of mental illness internally the cultural action can affect the observation, treatment, and integrate an of people with schizophrenia. Whenever culture influences the manner individuals to manifest symptoms or communicate with mental illness, support system, style of coping and will look for treatment can be affected also. Moreover, rates of schizophrenia appear to differ between the racial and ethnic group.

Some contributing factors to mental health wellbeing for mature adults would be exercise, eating a well-balanced diet, and timely health screenings. My dimension of health that I want to change is my psychological health .A constant in my life is stress, I stress myself out to the point where I get sick causing my hands to shake and the worst of all stress sweat. Ever since I was little,I have always worried about problems that are “adult issues” or things that are out of my control. For example like my mother’s financial status or I would worry myself to death and then find out that everything was ok. My first semester I thought that I wasn't going to pass the semester. I would call home crying all day and wanting to go home every week, when it was time to check my grades I had all A’s and B’s. I guess what causes me to stress so much is events in my life and others that I can’t control.
The topic of research I will be focusing on for this presentation is the manner in which tea positively affects one's emotional wellness. To be emotionally healthy is defined as the capacity to function well in different situations and acclimate oneself appropriately (Wilk & Newmaster, 2013). In order to maintain wellness, one must have a number of coping mechanisms to deal with the stressors and anxiety that accompany day to day life. Drinking tea is an excellent way to manage stress. It has been shown to speed up the recovery time from stressful events by more quickly bringing the hormone, cortisol, back to baseline levels. Also, the very act of preparing tea has been reported by many as an exceptional approach in managing stress, thus improving one's mental and emotional health.
Health to me is being completely mentally, physically, and socially well without any type of disease or illness. Health is when one is stable and able to do all basic necessities for oneself. Being able to take control of my own life and understand the good and bad in life and being positive whether the results are negative or positive. It’s being able to maintain control over one’s emotions and behaviour.
