It is a legal requirement that risk assessments are carried out. From asking the safety officer at the school, Mr Sandy, risk assessments at the school are reviewed either termly (depending on what they are) or annually, unless something such as an accident occurs in which they then have to immediately be rectified, such as a broken fence or missing padlock. They are simply a formal way of explaining what could happen. In which case the risk assessment is redone straight away and an action plan needs to be put in place. Minor risks such as spillages, litter can be sorted straight away. All risks noted need to be constantly monitored however for change. The key therefore is to allow controlled safe risks to happen, but in a well-planned out, organised setting. This allows the children to learn for themselves their personal boundaries and explore and most essentially learn new skills. Most children have an understanding of dangerous risks and know their limits. Teaching the skills to manage the situations and dangers through good role modelling, guidance and explanation will enable the children to have the safe boundaries and still learn that is essentially what is required. Planning (risk assessments and suitable staff) and organisation beforehand will fundamentally limit potential dangers. Question: Question 3b Answer: While children are in loco parentus (duty of care by the school), the school had the responsibility to keep children as safe and out of harms. It is their duty as a school as essentially they are looking after other people children. Safety therefore has to be paramount. Children naturally like to explore and more push boundaries, it is part of learning, experiencing new things and growing up. They are faced with new situations and risks every day. However, when it comes to their health and safety, while in school, children need canâ€TMt always have the freedom to do as they please otherwise accidents will happen. In my school, children love to run around the corridors it is fun for them, however it can also be dangerous if they happen to crash into another
