“Notes of A Native Speaker” by Eric Liu: Rhetorical Analysis Liu opens his essay by cataloging ways that he could be considered “white” in order to inform the reader about the similarities the author shares with white people, even though he is not white. The purpose of the list is to convey the message that Liu shares similarities with white people, and introduce the audience into his personal story about his integration into the white culture of America. The list is not specifically meant to be humorous, yet it has that effect, due to the generalizations and stereotypes that Liu states, like “I wear khaki Dockers” or “I vacation in charming bed-and-breakfasts” (1). Through the personal stories of his hair, love life, and behavior, Liu is able to show the effects of his assimilation. The second section deals with Liu’s struggles to conform to white stereotypes as an Asian American. With his personal anecdotes, he establishes himself as a more credible source to speak on the subject of assimilation. The second section uses narration to provide evidence about Liu’s definition of assimilation. The third section of the essay uses narration but also analysis, as Liu examines the effects of his assimilation. As Liu narrates his experiences in college, he analyzes their importance as related to his own acceptance into white American culture. Liu examines the cause and effect of his acts in college, like how he chose not to be pigeonholed by the race-specific clubs. He considers whether it was a good idea to distance himself from his Chinese culture in order to achieve success and respect in America.
