At the beginning of the war, the British was way stronger than the Americans and had more opportunities to win with its affluence resources and advanced technologies. United Kingdom was the most powerful empire at the time with its advanced industry development and navy force. They just took over the east of Mississippi river as well as Canada from France. There were about 30,000 British army soldiers based in Canada in supervision of the North America. In comparison however, there were only 3,000,000 people in the whole colonist area in total and one-sixth of them were actually leaning towards the British, namely the pro-British "Loyalist" (Washington and Continental Army, 1967). The American army had around only 10,000 soldiers with basic …show more content…
It was relying heavily on the American colonist for more resources. The British army were far from its mainland and lacked local support for food and human resources. On the other hand, the American were able to get help from the Britain’s enemies. Both military had a low effectiveness at the time with scattered and conflicting leadership for Britain and weak military force for the Americans. The Saratoga victory that took place on September 19, 1777 is considered to be the turning point in the Revolutionary War against the Britain. 600 in the British troops died while 300 people from the American died (Sieminski, 1990). Before this battle, the Americans had been losing ground to the British and had been merely fighting to defend. With this victory, the American greatly gained some confidence and started to turn to the offense side to win back the war. The Yorktown battle was the last battle in the war that led to the peace. During the war in October 1781, the British colonial army was greatly defeated. This battle was led by George Washington with the help of the French army. The French army even had battleships to fight the British army from the sea. This battle took almost a month and right after it, the two countries were able to reach to an
More over, the British were at the tail end of their supply line. There efforts meant that it was going to take time to get their supplies from Britian to America. This is what caused such a big problem in the first place. Thus, making it difficult to end the war quickly. The Patriots also were not nearly as competitive with man power, equipment, and money. This made them much more vulnerable in this war. The
The Revolutionary War was a Goliath v.s David War. 56,000 highly trained British soldiers with 30,000 German mercenaries known as Hessian's fought at the height of the war, while the Continental Army had 80,000 soldiers at the height of the war. Most of the Battles the Continental Army fought they were greatly outnumbered, but in some cases, they still managed to win because of their advanced weapons and superior tactics.
The reason the Americans were able to win was because they learned how to use different strategy in attacking they learned from the Indians. How they would do surprise attacks instead of just doing it the old fashioned way and standing in front and justy shooting people while they were facing each other. Two of the advantages of Briton was that their soldiers knew how to fight and they had people in Britain supplying them with good guns food and what not. On the other hand people here in America did not have a history in fighting they were more like farmers and also they were just now starting their now country or trying to so they did not really have the money to support their troops. Location took a big role in this, more of the colonist people already knew where everything was or how to get around place to place that was a big advantage for the Continental Army because the British soldiers had no idea where they were going or how the read would be, they were just shipped to the new land to fight for their country. Britain did not think they needed any help because they had the best army and the colonist did not know anything about war so they had a strong allie Franch if they would have not helped us we would not have won against the
Do you remember the Battle of Yorktown? I absolutely do NOT remember. Let’s travel back in time. The battle of Yorktown was one of the most popular battles in the American Revolution. It was also the last battle in the American Revolutionary War. It was in Yorktown Virginia. It started September, 28, 1781. The battle ended Tuesday, October 9, 1781. This battle is important to America because it triggered the point of final surrender for British forces. The battle was the last major conflict during the American Revolution, and its outcome in favor of the Americans effectively sealed the British loss.
Concord followed, the colonists lost and King George iii was already declaring victory. Then a year or 2 later, the colonists had lost yet another battle after a year of winning very little battles, but George Washington had came up with a plan. He was going to surprise attack Trenton, New Jersey, the night of Christmas Eve, and attack King George’s german mercenaries who were camped there. After they surprise attacked Trenton and won, King George became doubtful that he would win. Sure enough, after the winter of 1777 (a hard winter for the colonists that made King George iii rethink his doubt), France joined the patriots as their ally and helped them in the war. For the last big battle for independence, the Patriots and their ally, France,
Although the Battle of Saratoga had two battles, the battle that was won by the Americans was in the Bemis Heights, New York. The battle took place on October 7, 1777, right after the defeat of the battle of Freeman’s Farm. It occurred when the British army needed to follow Bemis Heights road, to reach Albany. However, the Americans took the fight towards the enemy and successfully won. According to the article, “Battle of Saratoga”, it stated, “The defeat at Bemis Heights forced General John Burgoyne to surrender ten days later on October 17, 1777. Burgoyne surrendered 6222 men. Burgoyne returned to England in disgrace, and was never given another command.” Although this was America’s victory, there were about 330 casualties, either killed or wounded (The Battle of Saratoga (Bemis Heights). Nevertheless, this was a turning point for the Americans because this battle showed France that they are not going to relinquish for their independence. According to the article, “Saratoga”, it indicates, “The American victory convinced France that America really did have a chance of winning. Soon thereafter, French money and supplies (and eventually, troops and ships) were making their way to America. The end had begun.” Also, in the article, “Battle of Saratoga”, it proclaimed, “The Battle of Saratoga and the surrender of the British army under General Burgoyne was one of the major turning points of the Revolutionary War. The Americans morale was boosted and the country now felt it could win the war. Just as important to the war, the French decided to support the Americans with military aid.” Therefore, the Battle of Saratoga (Bemis Heights), was another victorious triumph for the American
There are several reasons that helped the thirteen American colonies were able to defeat the mightiest emperor - the Great Britain. First, the Americans colonists were so tired with all the oppression and cruel exploitation from the British. The Americans did not want to act the roles that the Great Britain forced them to play. They did not want to obey the British orders anymore. They want their independence. That was the powerful reason to incite them to fight. Unlike the American soldiers, the British soldiers motivation were only fighting in order to go back home. The second reason was the support of both side were totally different. The Americans received excellent support from many colonists, even if they were not fighting. The American
The defining moment in the war came in 1777 when British general John Burgoyne's arrangement to detach New England from the other dissident settlements fizzled. Burgoyne was compelled to surrender at Saratoga, New York. The astonishing American triumph prompted a collusion in the middle of France and the United States and the war's extension into a worldwide clash. The British attacked the South again in 1778, however in spite of ahead of schedule triumphs, their crusade finished in a fiasco. American triumph was guaranteed when French and American strengths
Against all odds, the British lost the American War, even with what they had over the colonies. After all, the British army was the most proficient, best armed, and most experienced army in the world. The Royal Navy was at the time, the undisputed ruler of the seas. Although they were financially stressed by debt from the Seven Years War, and by costly nature of the American Revolution, Britain’s territory was still steady and sound. Furthermore, the British
“When the Revolution began the Americans were already in a weak position. They had scramble to put together an army (albeit not well trained) and a tiny, ineffective navy. While strengths were hard to find , their weaknesses were obvious.” (The American Revolution) This is exactly why the British were much a better fighting force. Great Britain had the more money, due to this they were so much more power.
From October 09, 1781 to October 19, 1781, arguably the most important battle for the American Revolution took place in Yorktown, Virginia. During this 10 day battle, American forces decimated the British with strategic and relentless artillery fire virtually ending the Revolutionary War. This monumental battle was won from not only artillery fire, but also clever tactics. General George Washington and French commander Comte de Rochambeau out-smarted the British forces by exercising patience to gain the tactical advantage. These are the events that led to the American victory and ultimately America’s freedom from Great Britain.
Other than the military victories, some of the factors that contibuted to the defeat of the British included the alliance with the French alliance, the colonist's knowledge of the terrian, and the leadership of the colonial generals. The first factor that contributed to the colonist's victory was when France created a military alliance with America after their victory in the Battle of Saratoga. This aided them with the reasources and troops they needed to fight Britian's armed forces. Another factor is the fact that they were fighting on American soil. Since the colonists knew the land and had lived there for the past century and a half, they had that advantage over the British. Me was there. The final factor is the great leadership that came
The American War of Independence was perhaps the first colonial war of independence during the period of European dominance across the globe. Great Britain, a relatively new country with a stable, democratic government, established an enormous trading empire which stretched from North America to East India and was the greatest superpower on Earth. It came to be so, firstly by its highly effective navy which allowed it to transport goods and defeat other rival fleets. Its government of elected officials allowed it to function more effectively compared to an Absolute Monarchy in terms of generating revenue from its colonies, and finally,
American history courses show us much regarding why the Americans needed their independence from Great Britain, and we know the essential dates and realities about their definitive triumph. The British military was the best known military in the world.. It had vanquished a great part of the world and won in war after war over the previous century. It was all around prepared, completely prepared, and contained 50,000 troops solid. In the event that you include the 30,000 Hessian (German) soldiers contracted to battle the colonists, the British powers overpowered colonial powers four to one, as George Washington never instructed a
In wars there are many factors that can arise to change the results of a war. The Revolutionary war was very much swayed by the advantages and disadvantages on either side. The American victory ultimately came from the advantages they possessed on their side of the fight. Without the advantages America had in the war, it is very likely that we could still be living under British
