The musical Rent is a representation of the Bohemian lifestyle of being different and being able to explore and be unique. What makes this musical so unique is its revolutionary musical style and a plot like no other. The lyricist and composer of the musical Jonathan Larson did something no one would ever imagine and go outside of the box. Who would have thought of putting lesbians, gays, HIV and AIDS victims, and the life of a Bohemian into one rock and pop based musical? This struggle to survive and accomplish things makes Rent amazing.

Benny tells them that last year’s rent was due and they refuse to pay their rent. Meanwhile, a street percussionist transvestite Angel finds Collins beat up on the street and they both immediately attract and find out they both have AIDS. When Benny cuts off the power in the building, Mark heads out while Roger is left alone until Mimi Marquéz, a club dancer one apartment downstairs from Roger and Mark’s, asks him to light a candle and she starts flirting with him. Although Roger likes her, he doesn’t want to be in a relationship after losing his girlfriend April, who killed herself because she found out she had HIV.
On Christmas Day morning, Collins and Angel go to Roger and Mark’s apartment and Collins introduces Angel to them. She gives Roger and Mark money after she earned $1,000 by killing a noisy dog named Akita. Then, Benny arrives and tells Roger and Mark that if they can convince Maureen to cancel her protest that day, he will let Roger and Mark live in his studio project rent free, but they both rejected that offer. After Benny leaves, Mark then goes to help fix the sound equipment for Maureen’s protest while Collins and Angel go to a local support group meeting. While Mark is there, he runs into Maureen’s new girlfriend Joanne and it gets awkward until they start talking about their feelings
