The movie Remember the Titans takes place at a newly integrated high school in Alexandria, Virginia circa 1971. When two schools integrate, their football teams, coaches included, do as well. Because of social differences driven by racial issues, the players do not agree with the change; consequently, the Titans suffer as a team. One of the coaches, Herman Boone, sees this as a major problem, so he takes the entire team out for a run at 3 a.m. to the nearby historic battlefield of Gettysburg. Coach Boone desperately wants the boys to get along, so he puts all of his efforts toward making the boys successfully play football as a team. He states, “Fifty thousand men died right here on this field, fightin’ the same fight that we’re still fightin’ amongst ourselves today.” (Eidenmuller) Undeniably, the fight was and is the fight of racism. The Titans know that they do not like each other because of their differences, but Coach Boone brings that to their attention using the logos of history. Fifty thousand men lost their lives fighting racism, and that was only one battle on one field. This helps the boys realize the significance of the problem they face. A war was unsuccessful in ending the negative feelings shared between those with different skin colors. Even now, the boys playing football struggle with the same problem as the boys who battled a few feet from where they stand. This emotional appeal relates a major obstacle in history to the team. He says, “I don't care if you like each other or not. But you will respect each other. And maybe––I don't know––maybe we’ll learn to play this game like men.” (Eidenmuller) Coach Boone knows that even after saying everything he has so far, some of the boys will still dislike each other. However, he does request that they respect each other for the purpose of playing the game. The fact that the Titans have not been respecting each other makes Coach Boone imply that the boys are acting childish. Men shed their blood for them here at Gettysburg so they could be equals, yet they cannot get passed skin color to play football together.
