Religion was involved with many things in a person’s life. It affects things like social status, relationships, the economy, culture, and politics. The complex ideas of religion and politics have shaped societies. The Puritans have set their goal to make their society and way of living connected to God in every way, shape, and form. In the seventeenth century this standard to keep God by your side has deeply affected politics and lawmaking, and has even caused some people to be continuously persecuted. From the strength of their religious beliefs stemmed these radical ideas, which deeply affected lives in the 17th century. Religion is a fundamental aspect of human existence, and it acts as a cultural organization in society to give humans a purpose in their lives. There is a wide range of religions and ideologies across the world, yet there is some basic uniformity among most religions. Generally, all religions have origin stories, sacred writings, an important figure, a worshipping or meditation system, and basic rules to abide by. An example of two religions that have these primary traits are Christianity and Taoism. Despite the fact that Christianity and Taoism are comparable at their cores, they have deviated in their ideas of the goal of life, the ways they get their message across, and their acknowledgment of evil.

Religion is one of the most important components of culture which has been used in understanding the universe, natural phenomena, what to die for and how to dwell among other people. Religion can be considered as culture by itself because it provides the set of values, beliefs and guidelines for specific behavior (Samovar, Porter, McDaniel & Roy, 2013, p.40). Religion helps to control the social behavior, maintains conflict, supports emotions and gives explanations to unexplainable.

There are many different religions with many different beliefs, traditions, practices, and rituals. These differences are a very important part of understanding and appreciating the culture and history behind the specific religion. However, the practices that certain religions have in common can aid even more in furthering the understanding of specific beliefs of other religions. Since most religions cultivate from the practices and beliefs of other religions, they use those core values and beliefs and transform them into what they believe is a better way practicing. Religions use similarities within each other and twist them into their own. There are certain beliefs within every religion that shape their practices such as their morals or their most essential or absolute value, their position on human beings’ problems and solutions, and their view on life and death within their religion. Pure Land Buddhism (a form of Mahayana Buddhism) and Vaishnavites (a group within Hinduism) are great examples of this very concept.

In it, they pray and do religious teachings. Christians attend churches, Muslims attend mosques and Jews attend synagogues. In addition, another similarity that is shared is that these religions all have a holy day. Christians have a holy day Sunday, which is when they go to church and worship the memorial of their Savior’s resurrection.

Religion has played an important role in the history of the United States and in creating the colonies of the New World in many ways. Religion was definitely one of the major reasons for the establishment of the colonies. The early colonists wanted the freedom to worship God as they seen as proper, and they were promised this freedom of worship. Most of these colonies were deeply rooted in their religious beliefs. Did you know Eastern and Western religions have similarities but they’re but everything they do is not the same they have differences as well. The religions share some beliefs and holidays not all they have different ways of life. Confucianism and Judaism are two different cultures with same want and a different belief. They both want to make the world a better place keeping it stable and peaceful in their own different ways. The entirety of religion is based solely on faith and the willpower of someone’s belief in what has been taught to them. In these teachings, through sacred texts, manuscripts, or orally transmitted; the basis of many religions is the idea of an object, person, or building being sacred. The reason something becomes sacred and is then believed to be sacred is because the sacred manifests itself and makes itself become known to man. With that said, psychologists ponder whether religion and spirituality should be integrated into methods of therapy and if so, what types of effects it can have on recovery for a patient. Before that can be done, there needs to be a definition of religion and spirituality to distinguish if there is a notable difference. According to Hodge (2011), spirituality can be understood as one’s personal relationship with the Transcendent (Universe) whereas religion can be described as the institution or community of a collective of people that share common beliefs and practices. There have been arguments in favor and in opposition in regards to the incorporation of religion, mostly the concern is to make certain that all treatments are constructed to protect and enhance one’s quality of life. Therefore, the obligation of the psychologist is to avoid harm in any manner possible, and to guarantee such prevention, the psychologist must discern if the inclusion of religion/spirituality will be considered an ethical violation (Fisher, 2013).
