The Dreaded English Class

Before starting English 1102 I was so excited because I knew who class I wanted to take; but, his class was full. I was a very sad cookie. Then my friend Josh told me her knew a professor that was better than the one I wanted and that I would love her class. I’m glad I trusted Josh and took this class. In my English 1102 class I evolved as a writer, experienced a lot of new things, made a few mistakes, and learned from them.

I received an acceptance from a US MD school during the 2013-2014 cycle. However, as an international student, I was required to deposit all four years’ worth of tuition in an escrow account prior to matriculation, which I was unable to do. While I was aware of the escrow requirement prior to application, I was on track to obtain permanent residency during the application year per my immigration attorney, which would excuse me from this requirement. However, given the uncertain nature of the residency process, this did not, and is yet to, happen. My family and I had recently immigrated from India, and coming up with the escrow amount was impossible at that time. Loans were also only available on a yearly cadence, not for all four years at once.

To begin with, English 1101 has been a very trying but beneficial course in regards to my writing development. Throughout the course, I struggled with keeping my personal feelings and opinions out of my work. Although, my idea development and competitive nature to have the best paper in the class proved to be my strengths, writing was a lot harder than anticipated. From Essay One to Essay Three, the quality and execution of my writings have tremendously improved. Along with writing workshops and journal entries every class, I can honestly say I have become a very strong writer compared to day one of classes.

Throughout the entirety of my high school career, I have always gravitated towards math and sciences. I enjoyed them predominately due to my proficiency in the subjects, as opposed to a natural interest in the studies. During my senior year, I began to enjoy reading more so than my previous years. I had read all of the Harry Potter books as a small child, but that was the extent of my literary background up until that year. That year, I watched the show Game of Thrones on HBO for the first time. I watched all seasons that were out at the time, and when I wanted more I decided to delve into the books. This opened up my horizons to the world of literature. I began reading more and more, gravitating towards authors like Stephen King and Harlan

I have learned various things during my academic career that have been extremely useful in my non-academic career. I honestly feel that I have grown in many different areas especially in my oral communication and media technology. During the summer I volunteered as a Volunteer Youth Coordinator at Northern Illinois Food Bank. I completed various tasks and projects that included, organizing programs and event, creating flyers and advertisements, internal blogging, data tracking, and conducting orientations. I was lucky to be able to do such a good job that they offered me an internship during this current school year as a Volunteer Engagement Intern. This would have not been possible if I did not push myself in school and learn all those different key skills. I am very thankful that I can say I have come a long way from where I was years ago.

Science grows and evolves just as my inspiration for it does. I have furthered this interest of mine by deciding to dedicate my entire future towards impacting both science and others with my biology major. I have been impacted by science since elementary because since my first time completing a lab in school, I have always been intrigued by the fact the I get to make a hypothesis and later discover if I was correct with my prediction. Although I never won any science experiment event at my school, I never gave up and I was always curious about the way living organisms function everywhere. As a result of always winning a participation ribbon, I was not interested in winning any sort of prize for my science experiments and I decided to complete

This year in English 101 has been quite the experience because this was my first English class at the college level. Signing up for the hybrid class I honestly didn 't know what to expect. All I knew I had to take this class in order to graduate. So whether or not I wanted to, I was eventually going to have to take English 101. During this term, I was able to further develop my skills in analyzing arguments and advertisements by using SPAC (situation, purpose, audience and claims) and effectively connect two pieces together. Also, besides grammar errors, I still personally struggle with creating detail within my work.

As I began to write my college essay, I had to think back about the important deciding factors in my life. Because I chose to write about prompt five I was encouraged to choose something truly impactful to write a good essay. However, it was not necessarily the topic I wrote about that made me learn something, but rather, the steps in doing so.

Moving to Texas to pursue my undergraduate studies in the premedical sciences was not an easy transition for me. I had many plans concerning for my premedical coursework but had to make sacrifices that prevented me from being the student I strived for. I lived with my single mother during my undergrad years. She worked multiple jobs to be able to sustain me during college. Despite all her hard work, I still could not afford resources that would facilitate my learning during undergrad. For instance, many of my peers had access to the best textbooks and most could afford tutoring sessions for added knowledge benefits. However, it wasn’t until my mother fell sick due to the stress of working many hours that led to my decline in grades. She suffered

I am a senior student, only one last semester to complete my bachelor degree, a step away from medical school. I will leave San Antonio and move-in with my husband in Lubbock, Texas. I will take part in a post-baccalaureate program at Texas Tech Health Science Center, and we will attend the same college while I prepared for medical school. I was smiling on that uncomfortable library chair, picturing all those ideas while spacing out on my inorganic chemistry book after long hours studying for finals. One semester away from taking a big step toward my goals, my heartbeat kept speeding out of excitement; little did I know at the time.

Having grown up in Ghana when I was younger, a deep sense of curiosity in learning science had been ingrained in me. In my everyday life I tried to understand natural processes and gain a sense of understanding for common scientific processes such as photosynthesis and many others. As a middle schooler and later on a freshman in Texas, this passion of science continued to grow as I took part in many science competitions and tests including: TAME, UIL and TMSCA. Since moving to madison 5 months ago, I was excited to find new opportunities in a new school and school district to learn more in science. At Indiana University, I’m currently partaking in a dual-degree program in Economic Consulting and Public Policy Analysis. When I was building my schedule, I knew take unique classes that would expand my knowledge and allow me to pursue my particular areas of interest. However, at the same time, I had to navigate selecting courses that would satisfy IU and Cornell’s requirements. With that in mind, I built a schedule that I have found intellectually satisfying for my first and second semester.

As the semester began, I looked forward to taking another English course. English has always been a favorite subject of mine because I enjoy writing. As I entered this class, I knew that it was going to be a heavy work load but I knew that I would get all of my work done if I put my mind to it. This was exactly the case in this course. The English 102 course is a demanding and quick paced class that requires hard work, dedication, revisions and no room for procrastination.

The writing process is always a critical piece when writing anything. I always like to start out with nice, old fashioned brain storming: thinking of possible positions on an issue and evidence to support each contention. After I decide on a position, I begin my research to find supporting evidence and will gather enough evidence for my case and, if necessary, enough counter-arguments to debunk in order to build a strong, well-reasoned paper.

My entire life I have been naturally gifted in science, excelling in a variety of classes including biology, chemistry, and physics. As a senior, I took Advanced Placement Environmental Science and earned an A. That class sparked my adoration for environmental science and greatly influenced my choice of majors for college.
