Reflection On My Writing Skills

This semester has impacted me and my writing abilities greatly. I feel I have improved in all aspects of writing. Throughout High school writing was never my preferred subject, but after taking this class I have developed an interest in writing and no longer look at it as a chore, but more as a method to express myself.

My writing skills have fluctuated throughout the semester. I feel, although, I have mastered leads and headline writing. Leads and headlines were the first writing skills we practiced and have continued to practice throughout the entire semester. The continuous practice of leads and headline writing throughout the semester, I feel confident in my ability to write concise, eye-catching leads and headlines. For writing assignment three I needed to provide a follow-up headline and corresponding lead for a criminal case. The headline had to focus on the upcoming sentencing hearing because it was the newest information about the case. In order to do so, as I mention in my blog entry, I had to write several drafts for both my headline and lead. [INSERT BLOG PICTURE] After many drafts of the lead I settled on a summary-lead because the article was a follow-up story about an established criminal case. I wrote the headline after I wrote the lead because the headline had to be a shorter, more intriguing version of the lead. After many drafts I finally wrote a six worded, eye-catching headline that was about the sentencing hearing. [INSERT WRITING ASSIGNMENT

Throughout the course English 101, I believe my writing skills have improved through understanding concepts such as rhetorical situation, purpose, audience, ethos, pathos, logos, and rhetorical analysis. Looking back at the semester, I reflect on my strengths and weaknesses. My strengths include my note taking skills and being attentive during class. Doing this, I was later able to use these notes to look back at while writing, which I found very useful. For example, for the essay Comparative Rhetorical Analysis, I took note of almost every piece of information Dr. Braun gave us, writing in the margins of the articles and highlighting important phrases. Because of this, writing came very easily to me not only for that essay but also others,

I remember when I first came to the Wilkes University, one of my edifier (?) (Friend, teacher, mother) told me "Don’t judge your class in the beginning, judge your class at the end of course”. In the beginning of my classes I was very nervous about how to write an essay. However, I believe my writing skills has effectively improved. To be honest, English 101 wasn’t an easy class for me in the beginning. College writing is entirely different from high school writing. I always have trouble with grammar when I write English essays, and it’s harder for me to learn and improve my skills in a short amount of time.

Over the past semester my writing has improved in three specific areas: extending the length of my writing so that it is more than just 300 words per piece of writing. Clarifying and giving my writing more detail so that it is easier to understand and follow. And finally by improving my spelling and punctuation throughout my piece instead of just spell checking the first few paragraphs.

During half of my sophomore year, I've improved my writing skills so much since last year and the beginning of this year. I have been working on achieving my goal that will make my essays a whole lot better. I’ve wrote a bunch of essays so far these two quarters. I’ve also know where I am as a writer.

Writing skill is a very important part of communication. Writing is the process to express emotions and ideas, allowing us to put them on paper. Throughout this class I have learned more than I ever thought I would. I have learned different writing techniques, such as, using vivid detail, MLA format, and how to use sources from books or websites. I was able to accomplish these skills from class exercises and writing the four assigned essays. I believe my writing skills have changed throughout this semester because I can recognize what has impacted my writing skills, along with my strengths and weaknesses.

When reflecting on my experience writing, editing, and completing the culminating journal assignment, I found that it was fairly easy considering how this was an emotional, opinion based paper. This paper probably took me about three hours to complete because I had to thoroughly reminisce on what I had learned this semester. However, after taking a look over my journals, I found substantial growth in myself since the beginning of the school year. A specific challenge that I overcame when writing this paper was procrastination because I finished it as soon as I got it assigned. Additionally, I feel this paper highlights my intriguing flow and unique style of portraying ideas. Accordingly, I am most proud of how I elaborated on specific journals and thoughts throughout this paper. Overall, I hope to grow as a writer in the future by attending meetings at the writing center and asking teachers and peers for advice. In the end,

Over the course of the semester we have written multiple papers with an assortment of topics. Writing the various papers has expanded my writing skills because each paper required different skills to satisfy the requirements of the paper. Through the various strategies we have learned in class I have improved my writing tremendously through using clear and precise language, considering feedback, and incorporating and explaining evidence.

After reading over my summer assignment essay and analyzing the comments and feedback of my writing I feel that I have a lot of work to do to improve my writing as a whole. I feel I had the ideas down on what I wanted to say on my summer essay. It was just difficult expressing them in a way that was compelling enough to the reader. The topics for the essay were not challenging to me because I felt that I wrote a lot about the one I chose on alienation. Throughout my reflection I will discussed the weaknesses and strengths in my writing as well as talk about ways I feel I could improve my writing.

As a student in High School, my writing composition was not very well developed. Although, I got help from my teachers, in addition to that, on my free time I went to the library to make extra corrections that were needed. My dad also helped me all throughout high school by reading over my essays and making comments on what I need to improve on, but even then I believe that my writing could have improved. I have tried to find strategic ways to improve my writing and I believe that I may slowly be getting there.

This class has helped me to improve my writing in many ways. Though I do not manage my time as well as I would like to at the moment, I have evolved this aspect of my writing vastly. At the beginning of the semester, it took anywhere between two and four hours to complete an essay, and I would wait until the very last minute to even begin writing. I have learned how to properly manage my time in order to write my essays in a shorter amount of time. I have also increased my ability to find and present sources in an academic essay. Though I still need to polish my ability to present information without bias, I am able to find relevant information in order to further prove my point in an essay. Overall, this class has taught me many valuable things

I have always had a passion for writing as it has always come easy to me. As with all writers, I do know my weaknesses when it comes to my writing. Personally, I believe my strengths as a writer consist of having organization and logic within my papers. My weakness is having a lack of creativity. I have always had difficulty expressing creativity through my writing and have resorted to writing clean-cut, dry papers. I took this class for a degree requirement, but also possibility to improve my writing skills. Over the semester, this course has polished my writing skills and has taught me many new ones, such as becoming more concise with my writing and going through research steps. Due to the helpfulness of this course, I would recommend this course to all incoming freshmen at the University of Cincinnati.

My writing skills are decent, if I take the time to fully process my thoughts. When it is a timed assignment or test, my skills go right out the window, I concentrate more on answering the prompt rather than the grammar, punctuation, or structure. It’s like a jumbled mess of writing filled with lots of errors. When I’m writing my main goals are to answer the prompt, have good structure, and no grammatical or punctuation errors. These goals sometimes get in the way of me expressing myself freely; if a sentence doesn’t flow right with rest of the paragraph, I will re-examine my paragraph or paper to see if I can conjure up a sentence to finish out my paragraph before moving on to the next paragraph. Over the course of the semester, there has been numerous amount of areas where I believe I have improved in comparison to high school. What has helped me in my writing is the writing class and the in-class writing workshop. The writing class that is located in the Kremen education building has helped me with my writing greatly because in the writing center the person in charge teach us lenses and we apply those lenses to the writing, draft, or reading that someone brings in. The in-class writing workshop has helped me because other students get to read my writing. This is helpful because I get feedback from many students and they let me know what needs to be fixed. A new tool I have been using is They Say I Say. The book is very helpful because of the information and examples it provides such as the templates. I have been applying the templates into my essays and I have seen a significant difference.
