Reality television has differed throughout the years. At one point it was meant to be a literal depiction of everyday life. Now, reality television has changed to be more dramatic and outrageous than an average person or family’s life. The Hunger Games, in a way, depicts the lives of those who live in the poorer districts where the necessities for life are not in such abundance as in the Capitol. Although children are not forced to kill each other in the districts, there is still the struggle for one’s livelihood. That reality is depicted in the games and it seems that The Capitol takes that theme and develops it into The Hunger Games that we know and love. The Hunger Games suggests that reality television is manipulated to the point where the viewers see what the creators (game makers) want them to see. Throughout The Hunger Games, cameras are placed everywhere to catch every moment of bloodshed and action. Katniss realizes Peeta is with the careers and she does not want to appear frightened or confused so instead she will “pause a second… Then I cock my head slightly to the side and give a knowing smile” (Collins p.164). The cameras are there to switch from a scene or moment that the Game makers do or do not want the people of the Districts or Capitol to see. That is where reality television is not truly reality any more, “people have accepted them as the kind of entertainment that they want” (Jones). The same can be said for reality shows on television. The
The Games put physical and psychological suffrage upon the men, women, and children. The parents are overwhelmed by the fact that they send their children out to die so they can bring some money back for survival, which takes a great toll on their conscious and creates feelings of guilt which makes them unlikely to rebel as they are having internal conflicts. The Games also make people prone and desensitized to violence; this allows there to be ‘peacekeepers’ and makes the games enjoyable! Moreover, the Hunger Games are widely attended as a pleasurable entertainment, as Gale points out to Katniss: “Since that year half of them died of cold. Not much entertainment in that. ‘It’s true. We spent one Hunger Games watching the players freeze to death at night. You could hardly see them because they were just huddled in balls and had no wood for fires or torches or anything. It was considered very anti-climactic in the Capitol, all those quiet bloodless deaths” (Collins 39). The emphasis is on the entertainment of the watchers instead of the suffrage the tributes go through. The people of every district and the Capitol spend a lot of time watching the opponents while making bets, sending help or just praying for their safety therefore the general public is so focused on the
Human interaction, culture and the ways of living within a society can be altered in order for the rehabilitation of humanity to proceed. The Hunger Games is based on what was once North America now called Panem, a nation separated into twelve districts, each functioning individually but all connected and dictated by President Snow. The division between districts within the capitals jurisdiction causes chaos which is created by the hierarchy of power, creating an unstable city and leaving the rich to profit off the poor through oppression. Human behavior and humanity are displayed throughout The Hunger Games but it is predominantly shown between the function and the structure of the actual games, the districts, their cultures, the main character, how she is a feminist in a post-apocalyptic world. The Hunger Games is a complex study of Anthropology.
In the movie The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen voluntarily takes her younger sister’s place in the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a televised fight, where only one person lives. Two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are selected at random to compete. The purpose of the movie The Hunger Games is to create a sense of urgency for freedom in young adults. The Hunger Games encourages young adults to rebel against society’s rule.
The Hunger Games presents a rather dystopian alternative to life in the United States as compared to the present time. To audiences, the story provides exciting entertainment as well as raising many ethical, moral, and political questions. However, there is another aspect of The Hunger Games which proves fascinating in an economical sense – the technology. Throughout the drama, contrasts in technological advancement show how important technology is to economic health.
This tradition served as a reminder to the districts that going against the government would be defying the culture. As a result of the consequences that the citizens of Panem have endured, many wouldn’t dare to go against the Capital because they have seen the consequences of opposing districts in the past. Consequently, the hunger games was a tradition used to entrap the citizens of this nation. Moreover, The Capital forced the youth to participate in these activities because they wanted these activities to become the norm of this culture.
The Hunger Games is a novella based upon the idea of a new America, where people are manipulated and manipulated by a central government. In the wake of a second civil war, this dystopian society that spilt the population into 12 districts, from Careers to coal miners; the capital created the systematic idea of a “controlled freedom.” In which The Hunger Games were created to prevent the idea or action of a future rebellion. The Hunger Games- is a televised event
The nation of Panem has risen out of the ravaged ruins of what was once known as North America. 74 years ago, the poverty-stricken districts of Panem rebelled against the wealthy, controlling the Capitol. After its crushing victory, the Capitol devised the Hunger Games as an annual reminder to the twelve districts of its authority, and as continuing punishment for the rebellion. Every year, each district must hold a raffle (known as the "reaping") to choose one boy and one girl (ranging from age 12–18) to participate in the Hunger Games, a competition in which each of the twenty-four contestants (known as
The Hunger Game holds several messages of dystopia; there is also a separation of class, both a difference between the Capitol against the rest and the twelve districts and decreasing living standards and government approval. The residents of the Capitol are kept uninvolved to the problem of the rest of Panem by virtue of their high
The presence of reality TV in both of the societies has dehumanized the viewers and participants. The hunger games is a dark version of reality TV; a show that the people of Panem are forced to watch. However the only group who genuinely enjoys to watch is the Capitol. It’s clear that the population of the Capitol are no longer empathetic towards hunger games contestants. Katniss observed “I know I should be embarrassed, but they’re [Capitol] so unlike people” (Collins 52). The dehumanizing agent is the hunger games. With every year, viewers loose a part of their humanity. It can be said the same for
Though there may never be a perfect model of our society, Suzanne Collins relates how we function as a whole to an exaggerated version of our culture in her book, The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is set in a dystopian future where children are forced to kill each other in an annual televised game to atone for a rebellion that occurred almost 75 years before. Panem is split into the Capitol, which is run by the power-obsessed President Snow, and 12 districts, which become increasingly poor the further from the Capitol they are. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are the two tributes from District 12 that must compete in these games. At first glance, our society doesn’t seem like Panem at all, but, as Collins shows us, our society can be just as entertainment obsessed, violent, and impoverished as Panem.
Suzanne Collins’ dystopian novel The Hunger Games, published in 2008, portrayed a post-apocalyptic Northern America, in the hedonistic nation of Panem. The Hunger Games were an annually televised event in which the governing body, “The Capitol”, appointed two tributes from each impoverished district. Twenty-four children were in opposition of each other and were forced to compete for their survival. The novel concentrated on the link between the contemporary society to an enhanced adapted dystopian nation. This was achieved by using allegory and opinionated descriptions of the identifiable problems of systems and ideas gone astray. Collins raised many questions in the concerning themes of The Hunger Games on the negative future development of Panem. This included capitalism resulting in income equality, questioning the humanity of the games and merging entertainment with sacrifice on reality TV. The Hunger Games, presented a variety of issues that were interpreted in various ways.
This is especially visible in the behavior of Katniss after the game makers decline to acknowledge her when she is trying to generate a good rank. Instead of falling under the disrespect of the game makers, Katniss successfully pins the apple out of the pigs mouth onto the wall behind the large group of game makers leaving the men astonished not only by Katniss’ precise dexterity with the arrow but further intrigued by her guts to acquire their attention. Similar to Katniss’ actions, it is crucial for the lower class of the U.S. to draw the attention of the upper class in order to establish an up-rise. In addition this occurrence alone earned herself the respect of the game-makers and resulted in Katniss receiving a rank 11, the highest between all the competitors that year. The Hunger Games encourages American society to do something about the corruption that is still existent in current society. Similarly, John Gerring and Strom C. Thacker research “the causes and effects of political corruption” and how it has “emerged in recent years” and despite this many individuals “know little about the possible role of different political institutional arrangements on political corruption” (Gerring & Thacker 1). This is significant because it demonstrates how many people are oblivious to the dishonesty within the government, correspondingly the viewers of The Hunger Games were unaware of all the lies that surrounded the games. The dichotomy between upper and lower class shows how crucial it is for one to take a stand against a powerful institution such as the
The major social question of The Hunger Games is about the Games themselves. Our hero/mockingjay of the movie Katniss is forced to face the fact that she will have to kill her fellow peers in front of a television audience in order to return to her family alive. The question of when killing is ever the answer, has caught attention from society forever. Katniss has to deal with the
Telling a story that is set in the future gives authors the chance to depict present day issues in a different light. They usually choose to exaggerate them so readers can see how their society might look in the future, especially if they ignore issues that can grow and become problems. In the case of The Hunger Games (HG), the author, Suzanne Collins, explores issues like the huge inequality of wealth and how the power of television can influence our lives. She does this by portraying the HG as an extreme reality game show where teenagers fight to the death. By highlighting some important connections between our worlds, the author shows us that we may be headed to a place very similar to HG universe. These connections are about how tensions are created by the inequality between rich and poor on television, how an external force like the audience drives ratings higher, and how producers do not care about the message they are sending, as long as the audience watches the show.
In Hunger Games, television plays a very important role. Televised games are a way for the public to keep up with the hunger games and to experience the journey with the tributes. The main concept of the television in hunger games is for entertainment but the results Throughout the games, Challengers are compelled to battle each other in front of the cameras as the occasions are broadcast everywhere throughout the nation of Panem as a game. Everyone from the districts to the capitol have an eye on the participants and their journey throughout the games. Due to the many reasons, the perspective of the concept of televised games is taken differently in capitol and the different districts. From the moment the tributes enter the hunger games, their
