Online degrees are becoming common and enrollment is booming, but success rate is significantly low compared to the traditional classroom environment. Research shows that drop-out rates for online courses range from 20-50%, often 10-20% greater than equivalent online courses (Bernard, R.M., Brauer, A., Abrami, P.C., & Surkes, M., 2004).
The article "Read-only participants: a case for student communication in online learning" by L. Nagel, A.S. Blignaut and J.C. Cronje, appears in Interactive Learning Environments. The article asserts that communication and active participation in online class increases the chance of the student’s success in an online class. Immediate feedback from peers and instructors and social interaction built into the online discussions contribute to learning (Collins, A., Brown, J.S., & Holum, A., 1991). …show more content…

Beaudoin (2002) and Sutton (2001) suggested that students can learn sufficiently by observing (L. Nagel, A.S. Blignaut and J.C. Cronje, 2009). Research by Nagel, Blinaught, & Cronje (2007); Rovai & Barnum (2003) Klemm (1998), indicate that participation is vital to be a successful online student.
The article summarize the points found in a research based on a case study by Nagel, Cronje and Blignaut. The data gathered by Nagel et al (2009) in their research on an 8 week web based Master’s program. Class participation, online communication, and group assignments were observed. The conclusion made after the research is that modules with discussion forum encourage interaction with peers and the instructor which allow ideas to be shared and learning from peers
