In the story Lord of the Flies, a plane full of kids is shot down. The plane that was shot down could’ve been mistaken because it was during WWII. All the boys survive and end up with no adults on the island. This story uses symbols of characters as savagery, intellect, and leadership. The first character of the story is Ralph. Ralph is the chief of the squad. Ralph is also an attractive boy, charismatic, and decently intelligent. His evidence of leadership at the beginning of the story is very noticable. Ralph is able to proceed with sense and caution. He works hard to keep the group's focus on the hope for rescue. When the time comes to investigate the castle rock, Ralph takes the lead alone, despite his fear of the so-called beast. Even in this tense moment, his politeness is default. Over time, Ralph eventually loses his power and struggles to develop an agenda for the meeting. Ralph eventually loses his excitement about their independence and longs for the comfort of the familiar. Jack is real quick to make rules and then punish somebody when they break them, or decide to not follow them. The whole squad votes for Jack to be the hunter because he loves to hunt. He uses the conch to his advantage , and tries to impeach Ralph when he can. Jack was also in charge of the fire. When he was out hunting, he let the fire go out and a ship went by. The reason the fire went out was because he left it unattended and they were trying to use the smoke to get somebody’s attention. The conflict on the island begins with Jack attempting to dominate the group rather than working with Ralph to benefit it.
