In the story Lord of the Flies, a plane full of kids is shot down. The plane that was shot down could’ve been mistaken because it was during WWII. All the boys survive and end up with no adults on the island. This story uses symbols of characters as savagery, intellect, and leadership. The first character of the story is Ralph. Ralph is the chief of the squad. Ralph is also an attractive boy, charismatic, and decently intelligent. His evidence of leadership at the beginning of the story is very noticable. Ralph is able to proceed with sense and caution. He works hard to keep the group's focus on the hope for rescue. When the time comes to investigate the castle rock, Ralph takes the lead alone, despite his fear of the so-called beast. Even in this tense moment, his politeness is default. Over time, Ralph eventually loses his power and struggles to develop an agenda for the meeting. Ralph eventually loses his excitement about their independence and longs for the comfort of the familiar. He indulges in images of home, recollections of the peaceful life of cereal and cream and children's books he had once known. …show more content…
Jack is real quick to make rules and then punish somebody when they break them, or decide to not follow them. The whole squad votes for Jack to be the hunter because he loves to hunt. He uses the conch to his advantage , and tries to impeach Ralph when he can. Jack was also in charge of the fire. When he was out hunting, he let the fire go out and a ship went by. The reason the fire went out was because he left it unattended and they were trying to use the smoke to get somebody’s attention. The conflict on the island begins with Jack attempting to dominate the group rather than working with Ralph to benefit it. The dictator in Jack becomes dominant in his personality during the panic over the beast sighting on the
German journalist John Zenger once stated, “Great leaders are not defined by the absence of weakness, but rather by the presence of clear strengths”. When one is forced into a situation where a leader is necessary, a person that displays the fundamental attributes will successfully guide the society. Throughout the novel Lord of the Flies, the boys on the island represent various aspects of leadership, characterized by differing strengths. However, the protagonist’s, Ralph, leadership undoubtedly triumph over the other boys because his attributes allow him to be a powerful leader on the island. Throughout William Golding’s novel, he clearly depicts Ralph as an effective leader through his desire for the survival of all of the boys, his adamant
Jack is also one of the older boys, and the boys don't elect him to be their leader, because the littleluns liked how Ralph had more experience in surviving without adults. In the beginning of the novel Jack is obsessed with power. Early on, Jack wants to kill a pig, when he approaches one he is hesitant to kill it but the next time he saw
In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Ralph is an example of a good leader. He has strong integrity, is considerate of others, and is brave. These are all qualities that many leaders in today’s society share. He may not be well known, but Mike Kryzewski is a good example of an effective leader in today’s society.
In a group, there are always people who prove to have better leadership skills then others. The strongest of these people can often influence the weaker people into following them. However, the strongest person is not necessarily the best leader as it is proven in William Golding's book, The Lord of the Flies. Although Ralph is the weaker person, he is still able to show a better understanding of people than Jack who is stronger. Ralph demonstrates his excellent leadership skills throughout the book by keeping the group in line, treating everyone with respect, and staying focused on getting rescued.
Jack tries to tell the entire group that Ralph is a coward who doesn't deserve to be a leader. He asks everybody to kick him out as their leader and to accept himself as the new leader. As the boys are very scared, they do not raise their hand to agree with Jack. This makes Jack very angry and he decides that he can no longer stay with Ralph, and goes to the other end of the island. As many of the boys want meat, they slowly start leaving over time to join Jack's new group. Jack and his followers create a lot of conflict because of this new group. Jack, the self-appointed leader, is the cause of the murder of two kids in the book. Jack, the self-appointed leader, is at conflict with Ralph because he enjoys having power over others, and also because he does not like the rules that Ralph has made, and instead wants to go hunting. Jack is also at conflict with Piggy, because Jack relies on instinct to make his decisions. He does not like Piggy's logical way of thinking as he feels threatened by Piggy's knowledge and wisdom. To get rid of this threat, Jack gets Roger to kill Piggy and destroy the conch at the same time. "See? See? That's what you'll get! I meant that! There isn't a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone---.".."I'm Chief." (Golding 1996, 223). Jack says this right after the murder of Piggy and the destruction of the conch. It shows that Jack really is a very savage person, who is not at al suited to be a leader.
Ralph is regarded as a democratic and charismatic leader. He would base any decision on majority votes and he is all about getting a job done effectively and efficiently. For example, he would crack his head to build shelter and figure out ways to get themselves for being rescued. Eventually, majority of the group members become undisciplined and disobey Ralph’s commands and leave to join jack’s group. Consequently, Ralph, piggy and the twins are left on their own to be hunted by Jack’s tribe. Ralph is also a sensible leader; he only keens on being rescued rather than spending unnecessary time to go for hunting. As the novel progresses, Ralph witnesses the beating of Robert and finds it bizarre in chapter 7. Ralph is forced to hunt a boar for
In the famous novel named “Lord of the flies”, there are four main characters that William Golding built up to represent the typical personalities in human nature. While Jack stands for the powerfully instinct savagery, Simon represents the natural kindness and Piggy with his glasses is the symbol of wisdom, Ralph has the best conducts of a real leader as he was initially voted for chief. There are three main characteristics that mark him out as a felicitous leader: rational, moral and unflinching.
A leader is someone who has determination. They are willing to do anything to benefit other people in order to help lead them to greatness. When I think of a leader, the people that come to my mind are those who have helped change the world. This includes George Washington, or Martin Luther King. Jr. I definitely do not think about Ralph from Lord of the Flies when I think of a leader. Some people may argue that Ralph kept the group together and knew what was best for the young boys. However, I am aware that Ralph had good ideas. For instance, the signal fire which, in the end, helped the boys get rescued was a good idea. Despite this, Ralph did not do an altogether good job at holding the group together. By the end of the novel, one boy went missing, two of his friends were murdered, and Jack's tribe had almost accomplished their goal of hunting Ralph down and placing his head on a stick.
From a first glance, it is evident that Lord of the Flies is not an ordinary story. The book begins by introducing a few boys who have crashed onto the island from their plane that gets shot down. Their shot-down plane. While analyzing the book, it becomes clear that several underlying lessons and themes are interwoven into the book to add a sense of deeper meaning
Many people consider themselves a good leader, but that is not always the case. In the book, Lord of the Flies, there are two types of “leaders”. Throughout the story, there is a clash between the two types of leaders. Ralph, the original leader, is overthrown by Jack, a savage tyrant. If Ralph was a better leader, Jack may not have taken over. Some traits of a good leader that Ralph lacks are optimism, confidence, and awareness. Ralph would have been a better leader by keeping the boys busy and focused, being open to new ideas, and enforcing his rules.
Throughout the novel Lord of the Flies, Ralph tries his best to create a society based on survival. As time progresses, it is clear that Jack's feelings are towards living life and having fun. Jack's society eventually leads to corruption, killing innocent people, while Ralph's prevails as the boys are rescued. Ralph uses a repetition of hope towards being saved while Jack's technique with no thought clearly flounders creating savages out of the once civilized boys.
I believe that Ralph is the best possible leader for the group of boys. I think that Ralph would definitely be a better option compared to Jack as well as all the other boys.
In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, I would have followed Ralph because he’s the best person to be the leader. Ralph is the best person to be leader because he isn’t just thinking about himself, he’s also doing all he can to keep everyone on the island safe as possible. While Jack is worried about killing a pig for food to eat, Ralph could care less about eating, he would rather get everyone off the deserted island by making a fire as a signal for help. Ralph has the best leadership skills. He shows these skills many times throughout the novel, and these qualities are what made me want to follow him. He showed his true leadership ability through his determination, intellect, and generosity.
“Many leaders are competent, but few qualify as remarkable” (Economy). In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, A group of are stranded on an island as a result of a plane crash. A struggle for leadership quickly ensues between the protagonist, Ralph and the antagonist, Jack. From the start Ralph emerged as leader and gets elected, edging jack out of the position. Ralph’s focus, his ability to think and his selflessness ensure his effectiveness to lead the boys while they are stranded on the island.
Ralph, who is the protagonist and plays the role as chief over the boys, represents order and leadership. Throughout the novel, Ralph attempts to keep the boys civil with each other by getting them to work with one another. From building a fire and shelter tents to making efficient rules to obey, Ralph gets the boys to all get along for a while, until they start to go stir crazy and break rules due to being deserted on an island for a long period of time. “We ought to have more rules” (Golding). As Ralph says this, he is referring back to when the boys just previously let the fire go out because of their carelessness as well as the fact that the boys were breaking rules and starting to act like savages. The character of Ralph plays an important role within the time period of all of the boys crash landing on the island to the point where Jack
