A three year-old girl is crying in an office because her father molested her. Her little round face is red and swollen while her mother rocks her back and forth in her lap. The mother asks, “What can you do doctor?” The psychologist’s heart is breaking with every tear shed from the young child’s big eyes. It takes a lot of strength to witness pain such as this. A child psychologist has to go through extensive schooling, mental and emotional preparation, and must have personal dedication.

Child Psychologists main focus is to help children and adolescents cope with dilemmas and adapt to developmental changes. Psychologists can work with children in two ways; one, psychologists are working closely with the child and their primary caretaker.

Before postgraduate work can be started, the student must receive a bachelor’s in psychology and fulfill the requirements listed for the psychology program they wish to enter. Once a bachelor’s degree is achieved, a psychology major has the choice of either obtaining their master's or their doctorate. When earning a master’s a student is accepted into the college of his or her choice, and usually completes the program within 2 years, or longer. If a master's is earned, the student may go on to become an assistant in a clinical setting underneath someone who has a doctorate in psychology, but they will not be able to do any high level of work. If a student chooses to obtain a doctorate they are again, accepted into the program of their choice, although admission is very competitive. Once accepted into the doctorate program the student serves about 2-4 years where they receive training and guidance in a hospital setting, but it all depends on the program they enter. Having a doctorate in psychology will open the doors for soon-to-be clinical psychologists, and offers a higher job title, certification, and higher pay. Clinical psychologist are not like ordinary people, they are benevolent and placid people. Psychologist observe others behavior, brain functions, talk with clients, and diagnose disorders. The reason I chose this career is because I would love to help people overcome difficulties in their life and to be there for the people that need someone to listen. Psychologist are not only there to listen but they also give advice to others. They give them exercises and other ways to help fix a problem they could be having. It is important to understand education or training requirements, skills or talents needed, salary and benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision

Psychologists and school counselors work with a wide range of people every day, and this task is very rewarding, as they know they are helping improve their life in one or more ways.

I've put time into researching all aspects of the job role in psychology and have a positive feeling I am well suited for this role. I'm currently in the process of completing the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care. On this course I have studied a range of units including Psychology which I found particularly interesting as we are looking into behaviourist theories including Pavlov and his Classical conditioning theory and how a person can be conditioned to behave in a particular way from a Stimulus. Another unit we are studying is Sociology which is interesting as it shows why people behave the way they do due to social impacts such as culture or social status.

To be a psychologist in most schools a master’s degree is required which takes approximately 6-8 years after High School and majoring in psychology. Volunteer work while in school is not required but definitely beneficially for a resume. It will also require obtaining a state license for most states, especially working with children. When earning a PhD it is required to complete a residency training program under a practicing clinician which will take about three years to complete. You can also receive a voluntary certification from the American board of organizational and business consulting psychology (ABOBCP). After receiving a doctoral degree and/or a voluntary certification, work experience is crucial and so is passing the psychology exam to be able to practice psychology. After passing the psychology exam, the next step is to apply for a state license.

A common similarity between the three are that all professions can provide therapy; however, none of them can prescribe medicine. According to Merriam-Webster the definition of psychology is “the science or study of the mind and behavior” (Merriam-Webster, 2015). It is the psychologist obligation to provide assistance to the patients as they make crucial life adjustments. There are many different careers dealing with psychology; each career is a way to define oneself. With the many different options, there is an unlimited ways to help others. An educational psychologist is a profession that people have the opportunity to help others.

A Ph.D. in clinical science is a very common degree for psychologists who either want to become licensed clinical therapist or academia-based researchers.

Another type of psychology to choose from is a counseling psychologist. These are important psychologists because they teach people how to deal with their everyday problems. They help their patients determine their problems and help them understand the problems they are facing. Not only do counseling psychologists help their patients with the issues they are experiencing at home but also in their workplace or their community in general. By helping their patients identify their strengths and resources, is how counseling psychologists help them with their problems (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
