Psychology Interview

Taking a Psychology class has taught me a lot about others and myself. I have learned a lot in this class and the information I retained will stick with me for the rest of my life. The knowledge I have gained will help me in the future by allowing me to be a better actress, CEO, and mother. The most important topics I will need are Lifespan Development and Psychological Disorders. These subjects can be unknowingly important when crossing paths with other people.

“Few fields of study offer more career opportunities than does psychology” (Sternburg 3). There are a wide selection of specialties a person could go into with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. In graduate school, which is a must to attend, there is the option to explore the different specialities or to go into the desired specialty without any research of the others. There are also many options within a specific specialty. There is the option to be a teacher, to work for various organizations, be a speaker, to have your own practice, and many others. In the psychology field these options can all be combined. In fact it is expected of psychologists to do more activities involving their specialty than solely sit in an office and listen to patients. I believe counseling is a collaborative partnership between client and counselor. Furthermore, this collaborative partnership is built from trust and acceptance of both client and counselor. I hope in conjunction with clients to understand the issues and concerns so to help them tap into their wisdom, creativity, and strengths to meet their current challenges. I believe in a comprehensive perspective through which clients can better comprehend themselves in the framework that our thinking about events can lead to emotional and behavioral upset. Moreover, counselors are to provide a safe environment for clients to explore their challenges and identify ways to move differently in overcoming these challenges.

The author performed two separate interviews face-to-face, selecting two individuals with different backgrounds in order to obtain unique perspectives. The first interviewee, named Jennifer Hodge, works for Allen ISD as a special education teacher for a self-contained DEAR (Developing Early Academics Readiness) class for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. In addition, her experience includes teaching for 22 years, with seven of those years teaching students with disabilities in both self-contained classrooms along with resource and inclusion environments. The couple that I interviewed for this assignment was my mother, Lisa, and stepfather, George. Lisa is 49 years old and originally from West Orange NJ. George is 54 years old and is originally from Wayne NJ. They both live together with their seven year old, special needs son, Colin, in Little Falls NJ. Lisa has a daughter, Alicia, 26 from a previous relationship. George does not have any children from previous relationships. For both, this is their first and only time being married. Currently they are both unemployed and Lisa is on permanent disability due to a knee replacement that became infected and stayed infected for the past two years. They receive government assistance for housing, food, and cash assistance.

I interviewed Dr. Linda Vandaveer, a school psychologist with the Simi Valley Unified School District, on February 4, 2016 at Katherine Elementary School. She also works at two other schools in the district. I found the interview enjoyable and interesting.

Dr. Rex Brown is the director of experiential learning and a professor of clinical pharmacy at UTHSC. His father was an electrical engineer and went to pharmacy college for 1 semester. Then, Dr. Brown found his father’s books and decided to apply to pharmacy school. He obtained his bachelor in pharmacy at Ferris State University in Michigan. After that, He served as a community pharmacist, part-time hospital pharmacist and full-time hospital pharmacist. After couple of years, He decided to apply for “ add-on Pharm.D.” program at UTHSC, which was a 2 years program of advanced therapeutics and rotations. He cherished working on TPN preparation and for that reason did a 2 years of residency in Nutrition at The MED, which is known currently as Regional One Health.

In psychology, a psychodynamic theory is a view that explains personality in terms of conscious and unconscious forces, such as unconscious desires and beliefs. In the early 20th century, Sigmund Freud proposed a psychodynamic theory according to which personality consists of the id, the superego, and the ego. The id is responsible for a person’s instincts and pleasure seeking, the superego attempts to obey the rules of authority and society, and the ego mediates between the two to meet the demands of reality and what a person needs. Psychodynamic theories commonly hold that childhood experiences shape personality. Such theories are associated with psychoanalysis, a type of therapy that attempts to reveal unconscious thoughts and desires. The aim of psychoanalysis therapy is to release represses emotions and experiences and to help the patient develop insight into his or her unconscious. Patients may suppress their vulnerabilities, motives, tensions, impulses, guilt, fantasies, and urges. Freud believed that individuals must unravel, experience, and understand their true, unconscious feelings to understand them. Classical psychoanalysis has become the least commonly practices form of psychodynamic therapy because of its intense demands on the patients’ time and emotions. One of the first classes I took during my freshman year of college was Anatomy and Physiology. This class introduced me to the different brain structures and functions. It was so fascinating that I started looking for every Psychology course available. My interest exploded after studying Developmental Psychology. I remember watching Albert Banduras “Bobo Doll experiments” and thinking about the impact of social learning on children.
