Alzheimer’s disease causes atrophy to parts of the brain, specifically in brain tissue, as a loss of neurons occurs in most patients.

The brain is the most important organ for regulating human behavior and thought. The brain is very complex and has taken centuries to discover how it functions. The brain is separated into four distinct regions or lobes. These regions are called the frontal lobe, the occipital lobe, the temporal lobe, and the parietal lobe. The frontal lobe is located directly behind the forehead and is the brain region that controls higher level thinking such as memory, planning, and judgment. The occipital lobe is responsible for all things visual. It is located in the cortex and is responsible for the functions of the visual cortex, which is inside of the occipital lobe. Of all the senses, humans rely primarily on their vision and “have proportionally more visual cortex” (pg. 99). The occipital lobe would play its role while playing the game of cards, being able to see the cards I have been dealt and noticing the mannerisms and gestures of my friends.

The connectionist model describes the different areas of the brain and how they process particular types of information (Brookshire & McNeil, 2015). We have a greater understanding of left hemispheric damage. For example, if an individual has damage to their posterior-inferior third frontal gyrus of the left hemisphere, they will present with Broca’s aphasia, which evidences as motor planning deficits. While scientists and researchers have a general understanding of what the right hemisphere is responsible for, we have yet to understand specific areas precise responsibilities. The cerebrum is situated at the back of the brain. The cerebrum is divided into two cerebral hemispheres, left and right. It consists of the corpus, callosm, and nerve fibers. The left and right hemispheres communicate with each other. The brain stem “connects the brain to the spinal cord” (Lu & Bludua, 2011), which regulates the body. The cerebellum is positioned beneath the cerebrum. It manages a person’s equilibrium and coordination.

The cerebrum makes up three quarters of the brain. In the cerebrum, there is the ability to problem solve, move, think and feel (“Alzheimer’s Disease,”n.d.). The cerebrum can be divided into two halves, the right hemisphere and the left hemisphere. Each hemisphere has four lobes, occipital lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and frontal lobe. Each lobe has specific tasks. For example, the occipital lobe is responsible for visual images.

Neurons (also known as neurons, nerve cells and nerve fibers) are electrically excitable and the most important cells in the nervous system that functions to process and transmit information. Neurons have a large number of extensions called dendrites. They often look likes branches or spikes extending out from the cell body. It is primarily the surfaces of the dendrites that receive chemical messages from other neurons.

Within the two hemispheres are four lobes: the occipital lobes, pariental lobes, temporal lobes, and frontal lobes. The occipital lobes are responsible for visual processing including shapes, color, and motion. The pariental lobes, located in front of the occipital lobes, are involved in touch sensatino and monitoring the body's position.
