Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are organisms whose genes have been artificially altered to modify their characteristics in some way or another. The first genetically altered plant was created in 1983, after scientists discovered that they can transfer DNA between two organisms in 1946. Today, about 85 percent of corn, 91 percent of soybeans, and 88 percent of cotton made in the United States are genetically modified. GMOs being in foods are a very controversial topic because people believe it causes harm to the body. GMO’s or Genetically Modified Food is one of the most controversial topics that have been studied and debated for over 40 years. Scientists on both sides of the spectrum claim that these modified foods are safe for consumption, but also some argue that these foods are toxic and very harmful to human life. GMO’s are genetically modified organisms that are created and added in a lab experiment where DNA are extracted from one gene and added to another plant or animal. This allows the genes to mix with the DNA to create a desired product. For example, bigger apples, larger oranges, taller animals, and plants that can survive the changing climate. GMOs are different from organic food and products because chemicals and DNA modification is not needed for these natural stuff.
What are GMOs? GMO stands for genetically modified organism, an organism that has had its genes or genetic makeup changed or alter in some way in a research lab. Two ways that scientist accomplish this is through either gene cloning or protein engineering (Phillips, Teresa p.1). In today's world, the need for more efficient and better quality foods grows greater. The population on earth is thought to increase to nine billion by the year 2050. To support this population, the application of biotechnology is used to modify foods. The reason why foods are genetically modified is to produce better quality food which can also fight off pests, insects, weeds and diseases. Not only can you insert genes to induce these effects, you can also insert genes to produce medicines which is called biopharming. Genetically modified organisms, GMOs for short, are becoming more popular in food around the world. Scientists take genes from some different organisms to add different qualities to specific crops, like corn. With that, however, comes many unfaced challenges like the cross fertilization of natural and modified organisms, resistence to pesticides, and health complications, to name a few. As GMOs are becoming more widespread, it is also becoming more evident that their presence is hazardous and they should be phased out of our food system.

Not only are Americans eating these genetically modified organisms – we are also producing them. The United States is the largest global producer of GMOs, accounting for forty percent of the cropping acres planted worldwide*. Monsanto, a publicly traded American multinational biotechnology corporation, controls eighty percent of the GM corn market and ninety-three percent of the GM soy market in the United States*.
As citizens of this world, we are entitled to know and truly understand the foods that we are consuming. We should be able to know the facts of the foods we are bringing to our kitchens. Genetically engineered organisms may seem as a solution for scientists and food industries because more food is produced faster. But, some people are highly concerned about what is really being consumed, and how GMOs may cause problems in the future that will affect us. GMOs have a negative impact on the environment, because we are eating “food” that is completely processed, and genetically modified. The food we are consuming, as a country, is no longer natural or organic, and can be unsafe to eat. When going to the supermarket, are we aware of how these plants and animals were grown? Where was the food that we buy, produced? Where did the food, plants, and animals that produce this food come from? Are the foods, plants, and animals consumed really “farm fresh”, like the label says?
Technological advancements have resulted in the creation of genetically modified organisms. According to the article The GMO Age Begins, the creation of these organisms dates back to the 1970s. This science has been around for many years now and can be used to improve the agriculture industry. Genetically modified organisms are the results of scientists extracting certain genes from one organism and entering them into another organism so that the modified organism may obtain new traits, as stated in the movie GMO OMG. According to this same movie, GMOs aim to make plants resistant to diseases and have the ability to survive in harsh weather. Instead, genetically modified foods have negatively impacted the world. Scientists should stop genetically modifying foods because GMOs are the prime reason why resistant weeds exist, they contribute to the pollution in the world and to health problems found in humans.
Genetically Modified Organisms are not needed to feed the growing population because enough food is produced to feed the community it is just a matter of whether or not people have access to it. Growing food is not the problem the world should be looking at. GMOs are unnecessary for reasons such as, increased toxicity for plants and putting local farmers out of business.
Genetically modified organisms, more commonly referred to as GMO’s, are greatly up for debate at this time. What 's needed around the world is foods and seeds to produce them. However, these types of foods or seeds might look like the common ones we purchase at the store for daily or weekly bases on the outside, but they aren 't the same inside. The reason why GMOs aren 't same as the regular ones is because unlike the them, foods like corn or broccoli that have an expiration period before they rot or they struggle to live before they reach the stores.
