Problem Set Three
1. (two points) A researcher is excavating a fossil bed from a Devonian reef, now fossilized in Pennsylvania. She encounters many species that are new to science. a) Which species concept would be most expedient and effective, in the process of collecting, naming, and describing what she finds?
Phylogenetic species concept would be the most expedient and effective process of collecting, naming, and describing what she found. Phylogenetic relies on common ancestry and shared evolutionary when defining a species.
b) Go online and research. Give at least three examples of actual species that were present in the Devonian period. What is the point, if there IS any point, to naming and describing species that went

Why this business of collecting sperm from males she never met? Std error is shorthand for standard error of the mean, in this case, mean survivorship of the ten groups of eggs fertilized by males in the same category. Why did the researcher list it? Would the data be as credible without it?
The female was not allowed to choose whatever male she wanted because the category for each won’t be completed for the second part of the experiment. The researcher listed the Std error because she wanted to ensure that the data was correct. She wanted us reader to know what the mean survivorship of the ten groups of eggs that was fertilized by males in the same category.
c) Go online and research. Explain the good genes hypothesis. What is ich? Describe its life history.
The good genes hypothesis is the traits where females choose when selecting a mate that have honest indicators whether the male’s ability to pass on genes that will increase the survival or reproductive success of her offspring. Ich is a type of an aquatic parasite that quickly attach themselves on the outer layer of a fish’s skin once they are born. Its life history is that they will feed off it’s host until it dies or when they are big enough to detach itself and reproduce.
5. (two points) Go to the following link and read the paper.
We use fossils to compare and contrast how and organism has evolved over a long period of time and how it has adapted to new changes.
Judging by the image of the magazine cover, this chapter will cover fossils as well as evolution. Perhaps it will talk about how land and water organisms are similar.

They chose the time period of 375 million year old rocks because they thought that it was an ideal age to check the transition. They were only able to find fish found in 380 million year old rock and the animals with limbs in 365 million year old rocks. Sedimentary rocks are ideal because they are made due to the turns of the river, ocean and lakes. This is the place where fishes and animals are ideal to live and survive upon. Also the environment, in which they are made, doesn’t destroy the fossils and they preserve them. In 2004, the fossils were found on Ellesmere Island in Northern Canada. This location was chosen because this is the place where there are no humans or roads or any disturbance that would forbid them to dig anywhere they want.

Problem Set 2 is to be completed by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 4.
1. The author chose to focus on 375 million year old rock because the transition from fins to necks and limbs occurred then. The scientists knew that any time later than this and they would find lots of animals with limbs. But if they searched earlier than this time then there are only fish without necks. When the fish were evolving they evolved necks before they evolved limbs so this was a good sign in chronology. Sedimentary rocks are the best types of rocks for fossil due to their gradual pressure and low amounts of heat. Sedimentary rock is also found in lake beds and streams, where fish and aquatic wildlife are most likely to live.
1. Describe species diversity: This is the living organisms with single or multicellular characteristic capable of genetic interchange found on earth. It highlights evolving variations of natural changes of species to the environment or ecosystem.
What Martin finds throughout her research, is almost on the level of disturbing. Throughout her article, Martin is simply just building evidence to support her purpose. After multiple citations and careful scrutiny over the way the egg and sperm interactions were worded, she notices a very distinct trend in their diction. Her results needless to say, were what she was expecting to find when she started the research.
