Portfolio Reviewers: My experience before English 2201 in intensive. I walked across that stage in high school because I completed my senior project. In order to graduate, you had to earn a certain overall grade for the project. I based my research off the argument that video games do not cause violence in adolescences. Stakes were so high; I was left with no choice but to try my hardest to apply my intuition and energy into this project. I had a brief semester to manifest a 12-page paper, and a 10-minute presentation. That was not the first paper I had to type, but it was one of the few that actually counted. My English teacher critiqued everything, from grammar mistakes, sentence structure, and length. Persistence and trial-error pushed me to score an A+ on that research paper. I wrote every subject in great detail to meet the page length criteria; Stayed after school for tutoring. Requesting feedback in my sentence sense of direction, and sentence structures.
The processes of successfully writing research papers never change. No matter what grade level or institution you are in. Research is always the first step. One must have a clear understanding of what angle they want to take; How they want to format their creation. Taking notes on the key ideas for each section can help lengthen and filter the written assignment. While you write down the key idea for each paragraph, you will possess more chunks of meaning that develop into specific details. Those key tips are what
Whenever an assignment was given, I used to just write everything that I could think of, similar to a free write. After doing a free write in my scrap notebook, I would then go back and insert examples from the text to further prove my points. After taking this class, I learned that is the incorrect way to write academic papers and that the best way is to make an outline instead so that I can make sure that every point is proven, clear, accurate, and most importantly understandable. I was able to see the improvement of how outlines helped through my first essay. The essay was about picking out an image and explaining its means to the visual context and its impact on culture. My first draft I had learned that I needed to step back and see
Research types of writings at college helped me strengthen my writing skills because as I started to research on a topic, not only I learned more in depth, but also learned how to draw further connections outside of the course(class). I want to improve my writings in making correct connections and organizing ideas. Sometimes, I misunderstand the readings and end up making the wrong connections. In fact, my ideas are all over the place whenever I try to make connections, which does not clearly show that I have understood the assignment. These mistakes often led to downside of my grades. The most useful advice I received that helped me improve my writing is that “the word ‘writing’ actually means to put things together, so don’t be afraid of express your opinions in your writing your opinion.” This encourage me not to be afraid of writing and expressing my opinions.
Students are subjected to write an array of essays, but they lack the required tools needed to effectively deliver a great paper. Although I was a junior and only two-years away from being an independent college student, I was still attached and only aware of how to write using the five paragraph essay guidelines. Immediately when assigned my first six page research paper, thoughts of how this would even be possible when I have not written more than five paragraph? Because I had only written based on structure my entire life, I began researching different structures on how I could write this six page paper, completely being blinded by the fact that a structure was not necessary. The required length of the paper was not the only difficult factor of the assignment.

I always start my writing process by reading the directions. I read the directions three or four times to fully analyze what is required and what is being asked. For instance, in most assignments are not simply questions. There are usually more than one factor in the question. After understanding the directions, I start following the five steps of the writing process. First, I pre-write/ draft a outline to get my ideas into answering all the parts of the question and to establish. Next, I start writing to establish flow of my paper. Then, I submit it to paperrater.com to check for grammar, punctuation, and spell check. Then, I edit my paper from the suggestions paperrater.com suggested. Lastly, I submit my work for a grade.
The first thing you need when you write a paper is a strong foundation. Everything must start at the bottom and be built up. This applies to everything. It all starts with an idea. So start your paper with an idea, write them all down and
After reading chapter 6, (p198-218) of Bogdan, R. & Biklen, S. K., it suggests that, whatever I am writing, I need to know how to choose the right words, construct all the sentences, and organize to see that end of my writing it reflects my real intentions. Also, in the writing the process should have, The beginning tells what you will do in the paper, it lays out the contents, the middle section develops, argues, and presents your findings, and the conclusion may summarize what you have said (Bogdan &
In regards to writing, I have always struggled to meet all of the requirements for a perfect paper that includes a well-organized text filled with rich analytical sentences. In the beginning of the semester I constantly worried about the structure of my writing and its overall material. In high school it was important for me to complete my essays by answering the questions that I was given, but in college, students go more into depth. College students are required to focus on grammar, and well-structured ideas that flow along with rich analytical content. After I was given my first assignment I was pressured to improve my overall work by focusing on structure and developing analytical content. Assignments such as the weekly readings and writing assignments helped me improve my overall work. Through the narrative essay, artist research essay and Storify project I focused on many aspects that improved my writing. For all of my assignments, it was useful to use techniques, such as, reading out loud to revise the structure of my work and going into depth with description.
What I learned this week from reading is to look at my writing situation and focus on the key elements (like purpose of your writing and the audience). I also have a habit of overthinking what to write and it sometimes takes me longer with writing which results in errors. I am learning to just write and go back and proofread my writing. If I have second doubts about my writing I will ask someone else to review it. When writing you has to discover your purpose and what you would like to accomplish in writing. Also know who your audience is; when writing a paper a person must know the audience that they are writing for.
This paper was designed to gives us a small insight into what college writing would be like while still giving us the freedom to find an interesting topic that pertained to both the writer and the reader/class. What this research paper did was make me view writing in a different way, because contrary to the smaller 3 page papers I was used to knocking out in 45 minutes, I was forced to sit down and try to understand the several different research sources I had found. I also had to go more in depth with what I was writing and formulate my sentences to try and explain and help the reader understand what I was trying to say about my topic while still trying to open the reader up to my point of view. All while writing this paper our teacher was also giving back mass amounts of constructive criticism at a college level to help improve our writing skills. This research paper help expand how I viewed writing essays past that of regular required 5 body paragraph essays that can be done in 45 minutes of one English
Some students find the introduction and the thesis statement to be the most difficult part of writing a Signature Assignment paper. However, the topic usually expresses an individual thought or curiosity to look deeper into finding additional information (O’Collins, 2011). Nevertheless, the introduction should capture the attention of the reader and capture their attention. For example, the first sentence in this paragraph focused on sharing the feelings of classmates on the upcoming assignment by indicating that the statement is the difficult part of writing. Creating an outline will also create a guide as to what topics will be discussed in the paper. The introduction and thesis statement should clearly state the point the writer is taking
To begin, you should always try to create an outline for your paper. When I create an outline it helps me understand the paper that I am writing. The outline is like a step by step instructions. It helps you complete your whole project In record time. Another point is that the outline makes my paper more organized. My paper would have a rhythm and it would be in an orderly fashion. The last thing is that I believe me making an outline helped my instructor understand what I am trying to say. Then I would have gotten a decent grade because he would understand the order I put it in as well as the reasons behind it. As you can see, outlining helps with a paper, but, if you do not check and look over it you could have some errors.
Working on a research paper is something I admire, because it involves a process that can be useful in various ways, and is applicable to a variety of situations. What I like most about research papers is the fact that it assists me in developing better organizational and planning skills. Preparing research papers are always challenging, especially for someone who lacks experience and motivation. A research paper requires time and effort, most students that I have seen tend to give up during the end of their research paper. This shows the lack of confidence they have and the inexperience to push on. Conducting a research paper also requires patience; at times you will go through a period of frustration and anxiety.
To write a good research paper, there is a need to be specific about the topic. The content in the topic must be specific, clear n short. The content should make an impact on the mind of the readers. Following are the ten steps which should be considered while writing a good research paper.
