Animal Cruelty is a problem that many ignore. People are oblivious to these animals and the negligence their owners show. Animal cruelty is an underlying problem in today’s society, and the only way to counteract these problems, is for this generation to do something about it.

Animals are beaten and abused on a daily basis due to barbaric individuals. When they went to their property to investigate, they discovered dogs and horses in several states of neglect and starvation and seized them out of concern for their immediate health”(ALDF). Increased awareness regarding animal cruelty would benefit society, pet owners, and animals themselves. When a problem is identified, it becomes easier to work out solutions. Animal cruelty is an issue on a global scale; animal torture and neglect does not only exist in the United States. Why would anyone abuse an animal? Animal abuse is rather common, you could be doing it even if you don’t think you are. There are many animals that deal with abuse or neglect, about 1,423 animals a year. That’s in the U.S. alone. Animals are living creatures, just like you, and they’re not cheap. Neglect is another version of abuse, and it can come in many forms. Neglect could be starving them, not giving them medical care, not paying attention to them, etc, etc. Animals are just like humans, I mean, sure they can’t make their own meals, and they can’t drive a car, but that doesn’t mean they have fewer rights than you do. Animal abuse is when someone mistreats or inflicts pain on an animal. Even not feeding them is a form of animal abuse. Animal abuse is a major problem in America. When looking at why animals are treated the way they are today, it is important to think about the history of animal abuse, the rate at which animal abuse is reported, why people mistreat animals, and current animal rights advocacy groups.

We aren’t fully aware of how common animal abuse is because most cases aren’t reported. People will report other crimes that involve humans but they neglect and tend look away when they spot animal abuse. According to Statistic Brain, the average number of cases of animal abuse reported in the media each year is 1,920 (keep in mind this is just media). From those cases, 60% involved dogs, 18% involved cats, and 22% involved other animals. The most common types of abuse are neglection/abandonment (32%), hoarding (13%), shooting (11%), poisoning (10%), fighting (9%), and beating (8%). There’s also stabbing, mutilation/torture, choking/suffocation, and burning (these are between two to five percent). But from hoarding, there are 250,000 animals that fall victim.

Unfortunately today there are many cases of animal abuse happening around the world. Animal cruelty or animal abuse can be defined as the infliction of suffering or harm upon animals for purposes other than self-defense. There are many different types of abuse such as using animals for research, using animals for entertainment purposes, abandoning animals to shelters, and animal neglect. We need to raise awareness and find a solution to these issues. Animals are suffering and we need to help them.
