Persuasive Essay : Why College Athletes Get Paid?

College athletics have been incredibly profitable businesses for many years. With the advent of televised sporting events, the profit margin has increased exponentially. The Texas Longhorns’ football program alone grosses 104 million dollars annually (forbes.com). So, where is all that money going? Most of it goes right back to the school. The athletes who practice for endless hours and devote their lives to the sports get nothing but the satisfaction of winning. So, should Division One college athletes be paid? Division One athletes should be paid because they generate a significant amount of revenue for the school.

Do you enjoy watching a good game of college football on saturday afternoons? How would you feel if college sports turned into a business similar to the NFL or NBA? That is exactly what would happen if college athletes began to be paid for their talents. There are many other reasons college athletes should not be paid, for example, college athletes already receive compensation in the form of scholarships, each athlete could not be paid the same, and athletes should be focusing on school, not athletics.

Playing college sports is a full time job and should be a paying one at that considering how much effort and hard work is put into the game. There has been an ongoing controversy about if college athletes should be paid or not. College athletes should be paid because they put a lot of heart into the game. This passion, that they put into the game, brings in a lot of money for other people yet they can’t see any of the money that they’re making for other people. Some of these athletes have a scholarship to play, but these scholarships don’t cover everything that is needed to survive and thrive in a college atmosphere. Some of these thoughts have surfaced about not paying college athletes because some people deem college sports an amateur playing field. This causes some athletes to take things into their own hands because they are not properly financially taken care of due to the money hungry thoughts of others. Surviving in college is an enormous problem, but it is not as extensive as having lifelong health problems due to playing in college.

The NCAA generates billions of dollars a year in revenue, through exploiting their athletes, and demeaning higher educations making them one of the most powerful and dangerous organizations in sports. When it comes to college athletes, there is a lot of thought about whether they should get paid for all of their hard work and revenue they bring into their schools. These athletes are making names for themselves and for their schools, but they aren’t professionals. College sports are the pathway to possibly becoming a professional and making a career out of athletics. Although they aren’t professionals, they work hard every day and don’t have time to make any kind of other money. Should these athletes get paid on top of scholarships and other benefits for playing their sport?

When we think of college athletes, we always think of how great these athletes are in their sports and how hard they are striving to be better in their sports. But what we do not see is when these athletes aren’t scoring touchdowns or making the buzzer beater 3 pointers is how their regular day to day life is, and how it could be difficult financially. This brings up the question of why are college athletes not currently being compensated for their participation in their sports? Why do they have to rely on a faulty scholarship that isn’t even guaranteed to the athlete to play sports for their college? If they are even lucky enough to receive one. When they aren’t even able to even receive a scholarship they have to pay for everything out of pocket. Which makes it difficult to do so since they mostly just practice and go to school everyday.

The final decision on whether to pay college athletes has the ability to change college sports dramatically in many aspects. Paying college athletes would be a negative addition to college sports. There are plenty of uncertainties when it comes to the amount of money each player would earn, especially with thousands of colleges in America in different financial states.

How would you feel if you were on your own, given a place to sleep, are working hard at school and in a physical activity, but were never given any wage for how hard you worked physically, and going to bed almost emaciated? The sad truth is that this actually is the case for some college students playing sports. Do you think that college athletes should be paid? This was the article that I chose to read. These college students at no time collect any type of salary for working hard for other people. I feel that these college students never should go to bed hungry, and should be paid for being on their college's sports teams.

Intro: Imagine this: full time job, full time college student. Tying to juggle your job and academics at the same time, putting equal time in for each. Then, at the end of the month you didn’t get paid for the work that you were achieving in your job. This is how college athletes are feeling today. Ineffective, useless and unproductive. Many people in the college sports industry are getting paid except for the people who are accomplishing the most, the athletes. They put in the work, time, and effort to their athletics but their academics are being overlooked totally. These students athletes generally do not have time in their routines to add in additional employment that they may need in order to fund their lives while attending college and living away from home, often for the first time. The athletes are household names, the faces of the colleges, and hometown heroes yet they often cannot afford to enjoy the fruits of their labor. This is due to the legalities that are involved in regards to college athletes not being paid for extra curricular activities. There has been a major discussion recently if a college athlete should earn money while they are in school. Many people think that College athletes , but it is better for college athletes to paid for many reasons. College athletes should be paid because the NCAA is a billion dollar enterprise. Billions are given to student athletes every year, and occasionally the average athletic scholarship at a school can be more expensive than the school’s overall tuition. For example, Ohio State University , is one of the biggest and most popular college football programs in the country. CollegeData states the average in-state tuition at the university is just over $10,000 a year, yet the average athletic scholarship is $17,856 for male athletes (2). This shows that athletes should not be getting paid because the scholarships that they receive already pay for their education. Also, paying college athletes would not making any sense since the athletes are already getting a free education and they don’t have to worry about paying student loans, paying for textbooks, the cost of on-campus living, and meal plans and other expenses which already puts them above your average student. Student athletes are some of hardest working people in the world but they don’t deserve to be paid since they already get to go to college for free and their education is are already paid for.

It’s unfair that these students work themselves to give their colleges a respectful name in the athletics department. Some college sports like lacrosse, expect players to have their own insurance and pay for any medical bills for injuries on their own. Not to mention the students have to worry about food, boarding, and the education. While some students have the option of scholarships, not everyone does so how are these athletes in lacrosse, basketball, football, soccer, and baseball expected to stay afloat at times? Those are the big sports that make the money for NCAA but the athletes rarely have restitution for their performances. Many individuals who do not support the compensation of college athletes say it undermines education, that may be true sometimes but that isn’t always the case. The NCAA has multiple billions of dollars in revenue every year. but the athletes don't see a pretty penny of that. Lots of people believe that college athletes should not be compensated monetarily. by the means of money. They think that a scholarship is enough compensation for the athlete’s work. However, But what people do not know is that not all athletes get scholarships, and not all scholarships include things like food and clothes. So college athletes should be paid extra money for three reasons: the players put in lots of work, the NCAA makes billions of dollars every year, and the NCAA acts as an employer.
