Homework VS Students What would parents think if they found out that homework may do more damage to students then good? Parents do not know the harm that homework is causing to their kids, students are sent home every day with hours of homework leaving students with no time to manage everything they have to do throughout the day. Students go to bed very late at night just to finish up homework and have to wake up the next day on only a hand full of hours of sleep and then this will proceed to affect the students academically at school. Homework has numerous of consequences for students and that is why I believe homework should be banned from certain grade levels as well as restrictions and policies on homework should be applied. Homework may bring emotional, physical, and socially damaging to students. Most of the students in the U.S. take multiple classes with different subjects each school year. Some of these students see their teacher every day or every other day, this means students are going home every day with homework and that includes weekends. Students already spend 8 hours a day on weekdays in school and then they also have to go home with about 2-4 hours of homework. If there are only 24 hours in a day and 8 are spent at school, another 8 hours sleeping, and about 3 hours of homework that leaves students with 5 hours to eat, shower, socialize, be involved in extracurricular actives, work for those who need to, and time to spend with their family. Above all, it is obvious students do not have enough time in the day to juggle all of this, and that is not counting the students that take bus and arrive home later than other students. Due to not having enough time through the day students will have to pick and choice how they spend their hours outside of school, one of the most common things students sacrifice is their sleep at night and this affects them so bad and they have no idea. According to the research MD Craig Canapari found “Short sleep makes children obese, sleepiness is a significant cause of automobile accidents which is the most common cause of death in teenagers, depression, anxiety, and irritability are all associated with insufficient sleep.”(2012 p.1) Another thing students usually
Assigning homework to student athletes can harm their performance in school and in their sport. One of my reasons why homework should not be assigned, is that the students don’t have the extra time to complete the homework. Another reason why homework should not be assigned includes, the students need to get enough sleep for school the next day. My final reason, if homework is assigned it should not be too much and it should not take longer than a half an hour to complete. In conclusion, homework should not be assigned to student athletes on game day.
By not giving out homework, students will work harder in class and have better grades. Teachers have to understand that if students are tired from late nights, they wouldn't be able to work efficiently during the day. In addition, students would be much more excited to come to school because they know they wouldn't have to worry about getting any homework. In 2010, a survey was taken and it showed that about 70% of teen ages 11 to 17 get less than 8 hours of sleep per day due to the amount of homework they have to do (Logos). According to Alfie Kohen, students feel forced to do their homework, therefore they aren't learning as much as they should (Ethos). Students lose interest in the topic and do not benefit from what they’re learning. In China, a cry for change by a mother who lost her thirteen year old daughter who committed suicide due to her inability to achieve in math, the mother considers homework is a huge negative factor toward her deceased daughter's tragic ending along with the pressure of society (Pathos). Such a story should leave us wondering, how many more children need to suffer the silent epidemic of school stress. Statistics prove the leading cause for the majority of physical and emotional complaints leading up to diagnosis of depression in middle and high school due to the amount of
As evidence, a 2007 MetLife study found that 45 percent of students in grades three to 12 spend more than an hour a night doing homework. If middle schoolers get 3 hours of homework, think of how much more high school and college students get, especially when 3 hours of homework is a lot of time taken up already for a middle schooler when usually they don’t even have jobs. Nearly 80% of High school and college students have jobs after school hours. Which their jobs might go to 9PM at night and they still have more than 3 hours of homework to do. That gives no time for them to relax, get the right amount of sleep, and spend time with
Most people would agree that homework takes a lot of time after school and out of their daily lives. 7 hours of the 24 hour day are spent on school. Then including, the average amount of hours spent on homework everyday which is 3.5. That equals 10 hours of the 12-18 hours students are awake in the day. Additionally, an average student gets about 7 hours of sleep each night, when scientists have proven that teens need at least 9 hours. There are simple and easy solutions to these problems, one is to take away homework for students. This would help issues like, no sleep, bad grades, cheating, not being with family enough and more! 79% of the people that took the debate.org quiz thought that homework should be banned. This survey included teachers, students, and parents. There are many students that do sports or after school activities and have not a lot of time for homework. Nearly 6 out of 10/ 57% students do after school activities. As a personal experience, I know that I have cheer practice most nights for two hours each. This leaves only a tiny amount of time I can spend on homework, concluding in me having to stay up later to finish it all. The time you spend on homework each night, could be spent on getting exercise or spending time with people to become better human beings or getting greater social skills. If kids are always busy, they don't get enough sleep. Too much homework also could cause bad grades or kids to attempt to cheat on tests because not always knowing
The quality of students’ homework is much more important than the quantity of students homework and data collected during recent studies has proven that homework is not making the grade. “. . . American students are entangled in the middle of international academic rankings: 17th in reading, 23rd in science, and 31st in math according to the most recent results from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)” (Murphy-Paul). Students should not be given an excessive amount of homework because the pressure of having to complete excessive amounts of homework every night is quite daunting for most students. Knowing how much homework is the right amount correlates with age and grade. An 8th grade student should not be given a myriad of homework that would keep her awake past midnight completing assignments. In any case, there should be a limit on the amount of homework all teachers give to students because an excessive amount of homework would eventually cause students to become uninterested in school and learning, which could result in poor test scores and low ranks in international academic rankings. In order for students to carry out daily activities throughout the day restfully, teachers must be able to provide homework that does not exceed the appropriate amount of time needed to complete it, which is based on grade level. If teachers are too clueless of a students health due to excessive amounts of homework, many students will develop cases of sleep
The first reason students should not be given daily homework is that daily homework deprives students of sleep needed. According to Nationwide Children's Hospital, “teenagers need at least nine hours of sleep each night.” For most high school students,
Heavy loads of homework can be shown more as harmful than good, not only for students but also for their families. As shown in Source B it says, “It is the primary arena in which children, parents and schools interact on a daily basis” (Gill and Schossman). Which I can totally disagree with from my experience, stating that every time I come from school to home, I always have to go straight to my room, turn my computer on, and either work on essays or have to search up problems for my algebra assignments, or just information for any class in general, which takes up a whole day of my life. Another reason is it is very time consuming! These homeworks are always getting in my way of either having activities after school or just time to spend with my family, which I hardly ever have a chance to do because of all the work I have, and might I also state that my mom is always worrying about my health since I usually don’t have time to eat too, also she is always asking me if I have time to read the bible with my siblings and father, which I automatically have to state I can’t because again of all this work. Another statement I have is how homework is mainly useless to our education, grabbing information from Source F, “Kids who wouldn’t dream of cheating on a test or copying a research paper think nothing of copying homework” (Chaika). Since doing homework is just such a waste for us we usually just copy it either from other people or from the internet, and since math class usually just gives a packet about what is going to be on the quiz, we end up using that to study which ends up being more helpful for the upcoming test rather than doing
The next reason too much homework is harmful to students is that studies show more homework to cause lower test scores. One to two hours of homework a week does not cause a major change in test scores (Wolchover). There is no evidence of homework having any academic benefit in elementary or middle school, and the academic benefit found in high school is very weak (Kohn). Homework is not shown to help students academically until grades ten through twelve (Wolchover). There is also no proof that homework increases good study habits in students (Kohn).
Having the stress of finishing homework almost every school day can have a toll on students who can't handle this much tension and strain each night. Students and children don't usually get as much sleep as they should when they have homework, for example, “During the school week, she averages three to four hours of homework a night and six and a half hours of sleep” (Greenfield). This explains that students that spend too much time on homework and lose sleep time each night can affect kids later. Losing sleep is not a healthy thing for students who need to wake up early and go to school. Since students spend so much time on homework, it can cause different forms of depression, ¨I can’t remember the last time I had the chance to go in the backyard and just run around,’ a teenage girl laments in the film. ‘I’ve gone through bouts of depression’ from too much homework, another confesses. A bewildered-looking third girl says: ‘I would spend six hours a night on my homework.’”(Hancock). This proves that homework can cause forms of mentally challenging issues or less sleep. Most kids go through depression and having something like homework that you constantly have can not be a good thing. Homework stress can cause many mentally challenging problems for students and other problems like this can be caused by too much
The negative consequences it yields come forth in multitudes. It gives teachers an excuse to not improve their teaching skills but rather assign homework to make up for squandered class time. Hours spent on homework leaves students with hardly enough time to spend on extracurricular activities, personal interests, family gatherings, and sleep. The stress it produces often leads to depression, physical health problems, unhealthy coping mechanisms such as drugs and alcohol, self harm, and suicide. An ample amount of research has been done that substantiates homework’s harmful impact towards a child’s educational progress and emotional growth, yet it is repeatedly ignored. For something with such hazardous risks to be viewed as an essential constituent of education is absurd. Our nation is essentially valuing education before life itself. Teachers should not be given the ability to deprive children of necessary developmental experiences by assigning extreme amounts of homework, and parents should not sit around allowing it to happen. In order for children to become truly educated they need to experience the world and what is has to offer, not be cooped up in their bedrooms for hours on end completing futile
One of the reasons why homework should not be given to middle school students is because it causes sleep loss. Students have so much work to do that they have to stay up all night to finish it. Craig Canapari, a pediatrician specializing in the care of children with sleeping and breathing problems says, “The combination of heavy homework loads and early school start times is a major cause of sleep deprivation and consequent stress in teens.” In the article, “Does Too Much Homework Cause Sleep Deprivation?”, it says, “A clear side
What the public is concerned about is if homework should even be assigned? Homework was contrived to prepare students and help them engage them in the content being taught. Homework also enacts time management skills and responsibility of growing young adults. Although the debate about if homework should be given minimally or in discretion and that homework has no verified benefits still stands. Homework is necessary for causing students to be engaged in the content taught and delivers time management skills for the future.
For one thing, homework may actually make it harder to learn. Many people say that the more sleep you get, the more your brain rests. When you are rested, it is easier to focus on learning. On school days it is difficult to get the rest you need. Many students get up at 5:30 in the morning to get ready and make it to school by 7:20. After spending many hours learning in school, they return home to do homework. Some students also participate in sports after school that take up much of their time. By the
Students shouldn't recieve homework because of lack of sleep. Sleeping is a very important part in your health, being sleep deprived and then going to school for eight hours is bad for the body. You can't focus on your school work when all you want to do is get into bed and fall into a deep sleep. Being tired can make you more irritated, cranky, and moody. Students need their full nine hours to function
Stress and anxiety in students is mainly caused by homework (Galloway 3). Excessive Homework can cause a variety of health problems and “Studies that have explored the relation between homework and well-being indicate that number of hours of homework is negatively associated with psychological well-being, physical health symptoms, and sleep.” and these health issues can be very detrimental to students (Galloway 4). According to Galloway a “study of 1,457 students…found that academic demands [were the main reason] students gave for their sleep-deprivation.” and a lack of sleep can be detrimental to learning and engagement in school. A study of Australian high school students showed that doing more homework led to “more mood disturbance (…and fatigue) (Galloway 4). More time spent doing homework, the
