Successful nurses are anticipated to promote their profession. When I accomplish my goal of becoming a registered nurse my strengths and abilities will do just that. I have always known nursing was the career for me, but my interest in it really peaked when I started doing clinical rotations at Angleton Danbury Hospital. Just seeing the people around me devoted to taking care of others really inspired me to do the same. As a result, I continued doing hospital and pharmaceutical clinicals throughout high school and participated in an internship at a cardiologist office throughout the summer. Furthermore, I see myself impacting the nursing profession because working in an array of medical settings led me to a field I feel so passionate about.

My goal is to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Trinity Washington University. After working in government and as a massage therapist, I realized that I have a calling in health care. In order to become a great nurse that provides optimal care, I need to be educated by the best institution. I am dedicated to putting in the time and effort to gain all of the knowledge Trinity Washington University can provide me, as I start my journey to the health care field.

As nurses we all bring our own values and beliefs to the job whether or not we intend to, it happens. I place large amounts of value on family and friends. These are the people you can call on for support. I know that without the support of my mom helping me with my kids and my house work there is no way I could be in the nursing program. Family is often a place when as children we learn and develop our values and beliefs. Giving this deeper thought I can see how this is true for myself. When working with B I would often think about what it would be like to be raised in an unstable environment by a mother who struggles with mental health and addictions. B was often placed in respite foster homes. I found myself thinking about what it would be like to sit down to meal with a strange family how awkward would he have felt. Building on this making connections with people is very important to me. Once I was able to build a connection with B I was able to work with him in a more cohesive way. Making that convection helps to build trust, positive relationships are built on trust. Being a good listener is a skill that I value as a nurse. Not only do I value being a good listener but I also value being heard. I value you a person 's ability to do what they say they are going to do. If you tell a patient that you will return to check in with them in 30 minutes than you need to be sure that you keep your word. When working with clients it is import to me to build on

Why do you want to pursue a graduate degree in your chosen field of study and why do you want to pursue a graduate degree at Clemson University?

My first career interest is to be a Nurse started at a very young age when I wanted to take care of my parents when they were ill. I would always tell my parents I will take good care of them as they get older. Let alone, I enjoyed helping and taking care of people. In my spare time I would volunteer at local nursing home to visit the elderly patients and interact with them. Visiting the patients in a nursing brings lots of joy and happiness to me. With that being said, life has taken me in a different career direction, however, I am finally able to pursuing my dream and goal of becoming nurse. As I continue to pursue my journey there are several areas of the health care occupation that will enlighten my knowledge about my career of choice, such as, the job description, education and certification, employment and professional activities.

My decision to pursue a career in nursing began in 1981, while I was living in Peru. I was accepted into the Medical School of National San Marcos University. This program taught me the basics in medicine and patient care. I attended this University for almost eight years, nearly completing my studies. Peru 's government structure had changed dramatically, causing a decline in entire country's finances, and I found it necessary to find a full-time job immediately to help support my family. I accepted a job as a legislative secretary to the National Congress of Peru, working for several congressmen for over nine years. In 1996, I moved to the United States and continued my studies as a Surgical Care Assistant at Memorial Hospital in Colorado

Throughout these past two years I have been working as a Substitute teacher for Prince Georges County Public School. Being a substitute has its good, bad and even worse days. But overall I have to keep in mind to not allow the students get to me or change my character or attitude. In all reality I really do not enjoy being in the school system. I love nursing and have a passion for nursing. I love caring for sick people whether it’s the infants, toddlers, adolescents, adults or even geriatrics. Nursing will always and forever will be my baby, passion and dream career.

OSF Saint Francis Medical Center has provided me with the opportunity to interact with patients of all ages and all levels of health statuses. Having decided that I wanted to pursue a master’s degree and become a Family Nurse Practitioner, I set forth and enrolled in a graduate level statistics course during my final semester of my Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at OSF Saint Francis College of Nursing. This course has prepared me for future graduate classes as it required a higher level of thinking and processing compared to that of a bachelor’s level class. I will be completing my BSN degree in December of 2016, thus far, I have a 3.90 GPA and will be awarded Academic Honors- Summa Cum Laude upon graduation. As long as I can remember, I have always been drawn to the health care field by a desire to help and make a difference in the lives of others. At such a young age I always found the doctor’s office an amusing trip, from watching movies and playing board games in the wait room to getting free lollipops which would only nurture my desire. Even as a young child people saw me as an odd one for watching Life in the E.R., I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant, and Discovery Health instead of watching cartoons, not to mention I would always carry my own special “doctor kit” everywhere, which included stethoscope, reflex hammer, medical records form and blood pressure cuff. Taking the first step even if you don’t see the path in front of you. Life is full of chances, and without chances there would be no opportunities. My whole life nursing has been my intuition. I want to be the first one in my family to exceed past the limit, and go to college. I have learned many different skills from my jobs over the years, which have made me such a dedicated and hard working woman. There are many different paths in nursing that interest me, but what stands out the most to me is labor and delivery. I cannot help but try my hardest in everything that I do, but I will not let down anyone while pursuing what I’ve always wanted to do.

If anyone were to ask myself five months ago, “when you think of nursing what comes to mind?” my response would completely if the same question were to be asked today. Within five months, the profession of a nurse and what it means to be a nurse has certainly unfolded. What speaks out if the many values that one holds when the decision is made that they will be a nurse. A nurse is simply not an individual who takes care of an individual in need of overcoming an illness and ensures the client is given the treatment. From a very early age, I knew that a career in a healthcare profession was for me. Volunteering at care homes and at the hospital is very significant to my course of study because it gave me a feel of what I would be doing for the rest of my life. With the knowledge and experiences I’ve learned after completely these community service projects, it makes me eager to receive a degree in Bachelors of Science in Nursing, so I can continue caring and helping others professionally in a hospital. I am a very dedicated person. Those who don’t know me might think that since I am in so many extra-curricular activities, there is no way I can give my full attention to each. Unlike most children, I was not afraid of the doctor’s office. Seeing the white coats and latex gloves always had me excited, even when I was getting a shot. I suppose even as a toddler I was interested in the medical field, not just because nurses and doctors gave you cool stickers for being good, but because it had me in awe. As I got older, watching ER documentaries and seeing hospitals always made me feel at home. There’s just something about the clinical setting that makes me feel complete when I am there. Nurses work around the clock taking care of people with science that is forgotten by most. Many people do not think about the research that actually is behind most medical practice.
