Personal Narrative: My Hispanic Heritage Shaped My Life

What makes me unique is that I am not afraid of failure. When I set a goal I do not focus on whether I might or might not be successful; I concentrate on doing my best and putting all of my effort into the task. What separates me from others is the adversity I’ve been through, my diverse skills, leadership abilities, my contribution to the community, and my work ethic. My Hispanic heritage shaped my life because I of what my family has overcome. My grandparents from both of my parent’s sides of the family picked cotton and vegetables in the fields to help their families. I have learned from my parents and grandparents stories that it is worth working hard in school to obtain a good job in the future. Both of my parents went to college and they have been a great inspiration to me. Not all of my aunts and uncles have had good jobs. Some of them only graduated from high school. For example, my Uncle Romeo become a construction worker after he graduated from high school. It is difficult for him to buy his kids what they want and need, and even provide for himself. Since I know Spanish and can speak it fluently, I was interested in something that would allow me to use this language. One of the great things about Veterans Memorial is its’ Estudiantina Program. Estudiantina is a type of musical class in which students get to perform Spanish songs twice a year with either a guitar or mandolin. I joined Estudiantina during my sophomore year and have enjoyed it since then. In this class, I was one of the ten students who were allowed to use the mandolin. This class has been a great experience for me because it truly represents the passion I have for my Hispanic heritage.
