Personal Essay: A Career In Softball

Softball has been in my life since i was six-years-old. I have been through many experiences, whether those experiences are good or bad, during softball. The one experience that stands out would be during my Junior year when I was constantly getting hit by the ball. Every time that I was hit, I reminded myself that I had a responsibility as a pitcher, and I need to fight through the pain. This responsibility has also translated into my daily lifestyle in many occurrences. As a pitcher, there are many responsibilities that rest on my shoulders. An extremely important responsibility is to do my job and pitch strikes. It does not help the team out if I cannot get the ball across the plate. To make sure that I can pitch to the best of my abilities, I practice and play softball year round. By playing in the spring and fall, I am getting the experience I need to become a better pitcher. In addition, I am involved in a winter camp where I pitch one to two hours every Sunday; if the chance arises, I have the ability to join many five to eight hour camps to improve my pitching. Whether it be through cheering, pep talks, or joking with the other girls, I always try to lift everyone’s spirits. It is no good to see the team’s shortstop sulking about a past play and not being able to get her head in the game; that is why I make it my job and responsibility to motivate the girls. This motivation really comes in handy when the team has doubleheaders. There have been many times where games have turned to our favor in the last few innings through the constant cheering. Towards the end of the season, I start to lose my voice through cheering and calling out plays. It can be quite funny when cheering when my voice goes flat, or I call out the wrong name -- which happens way too much.
