Research Question The question guiding this study asks, “How will a differentiated instructional unit impact content knowledge in an urban sixth grade classroom?”
Research Setting This study will take place at Mary McLeod Bethune Academy, which is a K-8 school that is within the Milwaukee Public Schools District in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The city of Milwaukee has a population of 594,833 according to the United States Census Bureau (2010) and predominantly consists of white (44.8%), African-American (40%), and Hispanic (17.3%) people. Approximately 29% of the population live in poverty, with about 65% of people sixteen years or older in the labor force. The percentage of the population twenty-five years and older that

Any students who do not return both forms will participate in the lesson activities but will not be included in the study. The parental consent form will include information about the purpose of the study and how information will be collected and used, and the assent form will let students know in age-appropriate language about the study and its purpose. The assent form will be read and explained to students so they have a full understanding of the study when they sign the …show more content…
Students will read a leveled non-fiction book on cells from the Science A-Z website (Fridell, n.d.) in small groups of students who have similar reading abilities. Observations will be made as to how students work in leveled groups and students will take a quiz as an exit ticket which will be collected to provide data (see Appendix D). A PowerPoint presentation (see Appendix E) will be shown and students will take guided notes to build on their understanding of cells. To gauge their learning so far, students will take a formative assessment called Four More (see Appendix F). Student work samples will be collected from this formative assessment and will be included as artifacts. In computer class, students will visit activities on the Brain Pop website titled “Cells” and “Cell Structures” (see Appendix G). Data will be collected through observations during the activity as well as student artifacts from activities within the program. Early in the second week, students will participate in a whole class presentation Jigsaw activity on cells structures and their functions. Groups will be formed based on interest and students will choose which cell structure they will focus on. Each group will create a poster using chart paper and will present their topic to the entire
Children’s Protective Services (DHHS) are very systematic on providing consent forms, agency policies, agency and court procedures, and child protection manuals to respondent(s). When an allegation is made, an investigator will reach out to the respondent(s)via phone or visit. During the investigation the respondent(s) is giving a child protection law handbook that explains the entire process, parental rights, court process, parent and attorney responsibilities, foster care, and case timelines. Each investigator handles the process differently based on the allegations.
If educators have learned anything in the last decade of school reform initiatives it is that one size does not fit all. Differentiated Instruction (DI) is an approach where teachers proactively plan varied approaches to what students need to learn, how they will learn it and how they express what they 've learned (Differentiated Instruction, 2015). However, does this all end when we become educators and then magically educators learn in the same manner? The ultimate goal of professional development is to strengthen the practice of teachers in order to raise the achievement of students (Darling-Hammond, 1997a, 1997b) (Sever, 2010). Effective school leaders not only adopt differentiated instruction in the classroom, but also for all professional development for their staff, ensuring the success of all professional developments offered.
In addition to completing my undergraduate and graduate education, I was participating in cellular and molecular research conducted by Professors at CUNY-Brooklyn College. I have worked with Graduate Deputy of Biology Department studying gene(s) that are involved in the fusion process of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a single celled green algae. Currently, I have the pleasure to work as a research assistant with Dr. Juergen Polle, a leading expert in microalgae biotechnology. Our research focuses on photosynthesis, secondary carotenoid biosynthesis, and biofuels production of various microalgae. These experiences remind me of the reason why I have a great appreciation and love for science. And that is precisely what my ideal biology class would look like; a place where concept are learned through research. From preforming experiments and critiquing the scientific work of others to attending seminars, students should experience it all.
The teacher first poses a question to the students, such as ‘How do we study cellular structures?’, activating the engagement stage of the bscs learning model. Once the topic has been broached, the teacher will
As per Beal & Lewis, 2014 Informed consent is a process of education and the correct education is a key to the ability to provide consent.
The chapter we will be working on is cell division and reproduction. I began the lesson with a bell ringer followed by notes on presented in a PowerPoint on the SmartBoard. The students asked questions throughout the note taking processes. I used a chart in the PowerPoint to help students understand the cell cycle of reproduction. The 7th-grade class began the chapter on the Earth's water and the water cycle. Throughout this lesson, the students had many questions. Again I used diagrams to help show the steps that occur in the water cycle.
The purpose of this lab is to insure that all students understand how to correctly use the microscope. Students will all learn proper care and handling of the microscope, as well as learning the correct way to look at slides and specimens through the microscope.

Little did I know my junior year of high school that the new science teacher would change my life. Mrs. Norma Branham is her name, and I got the opportunity to take her Anatomy and Physiology class. Soon, I learned that she would be the toughest high school teacher I had ever had. Before working at my high school, Mrs. Branham had taught at the University of Virginia’s medical school. Therefore, since she was accustomed to the graduate atmosphere, her main priority was to prepare her students for the rigors of college science, and to accomplish this goal, she set her class up similar to a college class with more readings, projects, and lectures. Even though Mrs. Branham’s class was challenging, I learned more from that course than I have in any other class, both academically and personally.
The notable similarities among the two different types of informed consent forms are that they include the provisions of services, fees, benefits/risks, and confidentiality between client/counselor. The dissimilarities include the counselor’s qualifications, credentials, relevant experience, and approach to counseling or psychotherapy.
Thank you for providing the information from the IRB. After looking at varies links, I found the first step is to protect the participants in the study is obtain parental consent (IRB, 2014). I will further into the IRB information about participants. Is there any specific link that would be helpful for the action research project? Does Concordia require the use of IRB services? The fact I was think of when I was typing that phrase was the fact that there are under a thousand people in the village I currently reside.
One of today’s biggest debates sweeping the nation is about sexually active teens and if teenagers should be allowed to get birth control with parental consent?” Age groups ranging between 12 and 25 year old's, pregnancy rate has dropped. Within the past few years, teen pregnancy has decreased in the United States due to different form of contraception and the use of protection. Even though birth control is given to teens at women’s clinics and such, it should be made easier because it can decrease the rate of unwanted pregnancy, our teen’s rights stay protected and any lack of family communication the teen may have.
This article discusses the issues involved in getting valid consent from adolescent patients concerning their treatment that pertains to them. It explores the idea of considering their opinions and capacity of knowledge when it comes to decision making instead of automatically leaving that responsibility to the parent present. It specifically refers to the consent of younger aged patients in the orthodontic practice environment where a conflict
Therefore, an independent aid that allows proper lab preparation and repetitive retrieval of information is required for long term memory development” (Drake et al., 2002). “The use of supplemental learning modalities, specifically computer aided instruction has proven to be an effective tool that facilitates the laboratory task efficiency” (Topping, 2013). Preparatory dissection videos – a supplementary educational tool that has been proven to increase anatomy examination scores (Topping, 2013; Saxena, 2008; Granger 2007; Wilson 1975) – has created an educational movement where medical schools are “increasingly engage their students in more independent learning of anatomy through interactive computer technology” (Saxena, 2008). At the University of California-San Francisco School of Medicine, students were provided video dissections of upcoming labs that followed scripted instructions adapted from anatomy syllabi and “were specifically edited to review the important steps of the dissection procedure, and to identify the key anatomic structures” (Saxena, 2008). This resource allowed students to prepare for the upcoming laboratory leading to their maximizing of dissection hours and a 3.4%
