A year ago, when I played basketball and volleyball for my school, I had to learn how to listen to my other teammates and the people in the bleachers cheering while still focusing on the task at hand. There were times when I had to block the ball from a really good hitter during volleyball and people depended on me to keep the ball on their side. Before doing research, I was unaware that there are a few types of EMTs. I thought that there were only EMTs and Paramedics. The names can differ by state, but the three types of EMTs are an EMT-Basic or an EMT, an EMT-Intermediate or Advanced EMT, and a Paramedic. All three levels are trained to handle respiratory, cardiac, and trauma emergencies. An EMT-Basic is the simplest of the three. The skills of an EMT-Basic include evaluating the patient’s condition and caring for the patient while on the scene of an emergency and while transporting them to a hospital. An EMT-Intermediate has all of the training of an EMT-Basic, with the addition of higher skills, like giving the patient some medicines or using IVs. Paramedics are able to offer more advanced treatment than both lower EMT levels. To be a Medic, and individual would complete 10 weeks of basic training, followed by 16 weeks of Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) training at Advanced Individual Training (AIT) which consisted of EMT training completing the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) test and field or trauma training. Like most things in life becoming a paramedic is a process. To be a paramedic he/she must build on their education as a Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). When an EMT advances to Paramedic their education allows them to understand how a scene is operated, make use of their basic skill set, and manage stressful situations better. When an EMT begins their career they quickly learn a scene does not always operate the way the book says. Due to this reason, it is important that the EMT familiarize them self with real-life scene operations before they are placed in charge of patient care.

A profession that is jam packed with adrenaline is that of a paramedic. Medical emergencies, accidents, fires, and others are normal cases for these every day heroes. Paramedics have to do extensive training in order to get awarded a licenses. Usually, the individual completes a two-year degree that consist of the paramedic curriculum, as well as other core competency courses such as anatomy and physiology. There are also 4-year degrees. The County Fire Department is one of the only departments that offers a hybrid course that takes 11 months to complete, allowing individuals to obtain an EMT-Intermittent licensee, which is a few clinical hours shy of a paramedic licenses. Being able to achieve a place on the Paramedic Science course will fulfil a huge dream of mine. I’ve always had an interest in caring for people and to try to make a difference to their lives. Often just by being a listening ear or just listening to a life story can make a significant difference to an individual. Over the last couple of years, I have had the opportunity to undertake work experience working with a range of different people with learning difficulties, children with complex learning needs as well as adults with visual impairments and disabilities. This has given me a good insight as well as given me a lot of experience dealing with a range of young and elderly people with a variety of medical and health conditions.

The EMR training was a valuable experience that has allowed me to acquire the necessary knowledge for identifying life threatening situations during emergencies, and what steps are necessary to follow in order to stablish safety and give the best care for the patient. During the training I learned about how the EMS system works after is activated, and what is expected from the EMR while awaiting for a higher level of care. I learned about how important it is for the EMR to communicate clearly and give complete information to dispatch and to those involved in the EMS during the response of a scene.
