Overcoming Obstacles Affecting My Educational Journey

In the first day of high school, I began a new chapter in my life. I must say, the transition from Junior High to High School has been quite challenging for myself. Since the beginning of this new chapter, I have been forced to overcome many challenges that I never had to deal with in my junior high school such as the sheer volume of homework, disinterest in certain subject areas, and an ineffective use of time throughout all of my core subjects. When I was younger, basketball was all I wanted to play, it just looked like so much fun. In fifth grade I had my parents sign me up for CYB, then in sixth grade I tried out for middle school basketball and played all the way up until ninth grade. In middle school when I was in eighth grade I was awarded the captain position and that helped me build leadership and responsibility. All of the players especially the younger ones knew they could always come to me at any time if they needed anything or help with anything. High school basketball was a lot different than middle school. In middle school I was one of the star players so I played a lot but in high school that changed. I have been in a few school activities. One of the main activities that I have been involved in is Color guard. Since my sophomore year, I have been on the guard and participating in all of the competitions with the band. It is a great way to get involved, make new friends, and create new experiences. I am also in my school’s National Honor Society which is an organization that consists of the top academic scholars. We do volunteer work and do activities that display integrity. We have done blood drives as well as packaged food for Kids Against Hunger. That is another organization that people can do to help package food for children across seas that don’t have any source of nourishment. I am an active thespian which is a group of sorts that is dedicated to the fine arts. During my Junior year at Colfax High School, I was recruited into a new program called Link Crew which is a freshman transition program that welcomes incoming freshmen and makes them feel comfortable and supported throughout the first year of high school. This program was not only a club but also a class called Wings in which we would precisely plan Academic Follow Up's (AFU) for the freshmen, and organize events such as a Haunted House and a Blood Drive for the whole school. Also during my Junior year, I joined the Leo's Club which is a student run club that's purpose is to perform service projects within our school and community. I was able to become a certified volunteer of Colfax and Meadow Vista once I had not only met, but exceeded the minimum of 35 hours of volunteer work. Outside of school, I became interested in snowboarding which allowed me to get a seasonal job at a Ski

I am in Quiz Bowl which has allowed me to learn new information and connect with other kids from different schools. Pep Club is another great opportunity. We decorate for the homecoming dance and plan activities and dress-up days. We collect pennies, nickels, and quarters and donated the money raised to the local food pantry to help with their expenses. This year I am currently serving as a student council member. We help set up Winter Carnival games, pick out dress-up days for homecoming, and help seat people at graduation. Last spring, I was inducted into our school’s NHS chapter. Being in NHS allows me the opportunity to assist our local Lions Club with community service projects. These community service projects allow me to be involved and give back to the community. I have been recently voted to be a student representative of the school board. I am excited to learn how the board makes decisions for our staff and students. Starting high school, I was not a perfect student. However, over the past three years, it is clear that my grades have drastically improved. Whether it was adjusting to AP classes or balancing extracurricular activities and homework, I became proficient at handling the twists and turns of high school. Once you’ve been in school for nearly 12 years of your life you think you know all of the tricks to conquering the school year. When a problem arises you think you know the easy way out of it or the perfect way to avoid it. Some kids probably believe that as you continue on through your education these problems will just simply decrease. As a junior in high school, I’ve come to find that that assumption couldn’t be more false. High school came as a scare to me and I felt that I was the only one going through those typical teenage problems; however, after reading How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character, by Paul Tough, I began to gain some of my confidence back.

Staying focused can help me accomplish almost anything, from studying for a test to finishing my work an hour early. Staying focused can help improve professional life, help me listen to people better, and also help come up with a solution to problems at a quicker speed. Having a job and being a student is not an easy task, you need to find the time to do both in a way that it doesn’t take over your life. Therefore, I compose time for myself by doing methods that I enjoy doing, like playing video games and taking a short nap after a long day of work before heading to school.

Each and every day I live by this quote when thinking about my future and the obstacles that lay ahead. One hurdle that I can think to be the toughest is the transition from Elementary to Middle School. This was very terrifying for me as 11 year old juvenile. So what did I do? Most of my life I have been an introvert and unusually humble. This obstacle had set me back from attempting new hobbies and even affected my grades in school. It has taken a lengthy amount of time to overcome this behavior and have only recently overcome it.

Another club I am a member of is Key Club. I joined this club because it is a club dedicated to community service and I wanted to know what more I could do. In my junior year I became co-captain of Key Club’s Relay for Life team and am continuing as a co-captain this year. I’ve been working with the other captain to plan fundraisers and our events. My main obstacle that I have encountered every semester is financial costs. I have been working non-stop ever since 2015 to pay for mainly my book fees and other costs that my schools have said I owe. I have never taken out a loan, nor would I like to. The Kohl's Associate Scholarship will give me that extra boost I need in order to shift the focus of my mind from worrying about "how am I going to pay for my necessities this semester?" to "now I can worry less about money and focus more on my studies!" My greatest challenge so far has to be balancing high school with the issues that my family has faced. During ninth and tenth grade, my mother was experiencing back pain as well as scaitia in her leg, which almost led her to be bed-ridden. My mother experienced tremendous pain and her pain killers were not even helping her out. To further arise the issue, neither of my parents speak English well, so it was my responsibility to go with my parents to any doctor’s appointments or any other appointments that were necessary. Furthermore, the first two years of high school were also an intense period for me because my father also had two neck surgeries in the past and with his age, his body was not supporting him either. I am a determined woman paying for my fresh start out of pocket by working full time and attending school to become a RN. Always being independent and working hard from a young age helping to support my single parent household. The obstacles I overcame by being low income, helping my father recoup after having several surgeries, and health problems, plus my health problems. Yet, I have kept my grades up, having nearly perfect attendance in work and school my whole life.
