There are many themes in the Odyssey that are very important to the time period it was written in. Bravery, pride, and loyalty were the most popular in all of Greek Stories told in this time period. Achilles showed all of these things and so did Odysseus. Odysseus showed bravery because he left his child and wife to go fight and defeat the Trojans. As he is on the boat he says to himself how he can fight alone without the Greek goddess Athena. He shows his bravery because he wants to take on the fight alone. Bravery also comes into play when Poseidon tries to make his journey difficult back home to his family. “All the gods pitied him, except Poseidon” (Homer 291). This shows how all the gods wanted the best for him expect Poseidon. With him doing this Odysseus shows his bravery by continuing with the journey. Odysseus shows his bravery at when he is stranded in the ocean but uses his “strong hands to cling to the rocks until the skin was ripped off” (Homer 354). Odysseus is brave and swims to shore while his hand are being cut open.

Odysseus can be viewed as brave throughout the story because of many acts of courage he shows. Odysseus has showed us that even in tough times like the time he was trapped in the Cyclops's cave, Odysseus can still show his leadership skills. When his army was turned into animals by Circe, he risked his life climbing up a mountain to save the men. In addition, he ate a poisonous plant that Hermes, the messenger of the gods, offered to him for his protection. He accepted the offer, skeptical and afraid of what would happen if he did not take the plant. Once Odysseus got Circe to turn his crew back to humans after a year of supplicating, he leaves to the Underworld to find a way home. This is also very brave of Odysseus, because traveling to the underworld meant certain death. When he arrives, he sacrifices a lamb to a blind prophet, Tiresias, and he tells Odysseus how to get home.

In the Merriam-Webster dictionary a hero is described as “ a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability.” Renowned author R.L Hunter depicts a hero as “The heroes of epic should be, if not idealized or 'perfect' figures, at least admirable ones who inspire in listeners and readers an awe and a desire, however misplaced or unrealizable, to imitate; heroes should be exemplars of moral and physical action.” These are two definitions of a hero that describe exemplary character. According to the definition of a hero, the main character of the Odyssey, Odysseus is not a hero. While odysseus fits some standards of a hero, he holds specific traits that cause him to not be a hero.

The Homeric epic, the Odyssey, is set in the peaceful years following the Trojan War, and concerns the returning heroes on their journeys home, in particular Odysseus of Ithaca. Odysseus is an epic hero; he displays courage, superior strength, and leadership, all qualities that people admire. While displaying these archetypal heroic traits he also displays his weaknesses as a man, particularly his excessive pride, which actually make him easy to relate to. So by demonstrating his strengths, and overcoming his weaknesses he becomes an epic hero, not only in Homer 's time but in the 21st century as well. Homer succeeded in making a character that can solve almost any problem, and also fits the role of the perfect hero for the people of Ithaca. “He embodies many of the qualities most admired in ancient Greek culture-intelligence, prudence, courage, strength in battle, agility in athletics, and, most distinctively, willingness or guile” (Bloom 29).
