Gangs in Chicago go hand and hand because of the rich history this topic has to offer. Coincidence? One may think not. In the time of famous mobster, Al Capone, gangs in Chicago were just evolving but did not live up to the names they have today. This includes their literal name, “gangs” , and the reputation they have today. However, groups similar to these of today have been around since the beginning of time, and not until after Al Capone did these groups get their name of “gang(s)”. Before they were just known as “mobs”. These sort of “gangs” were groups that had similar interests, backgrounds and goals they had in common. However, there is a difference between them then and now, but there are similar characteristics as well. The makeup of gangs today seem to have the same consistent patterns in terms of people who join, how they join, and where they join.

The vast majority of young people involved in gangs suffer from persistent social and economic inequalities. The process of a young person’s involvement in gang happens over time. This process is influenced by major risk factors such as high levels of poverty, economic deprivation, and familial conflict. A closer look at the sociological theories of criminology may assist us in understanding youth gang involvement. In this paper, I compare the relative strengths and limitations of two competing theoretical approaches to explain the factors that influence youth gang membership. I argue that Social Disorganization theory can explain both socioeconomic and poverty, while Labelling theory can explain neighborhoods with a high gang presence as reasons that compel a young person to join a gang. I argue that, unlike the other two theories, Marxist theory approaches the issue of youth gang involvement by questioning how capitalist societies generate economic inequalities. In contrast to Social Disorganization and Labelling theory, I argue that Marxist theory offers the most compelling theoretical perspective to explain youth gang involvement.

I agree this was an interesting study as they focused on the life of the gang member following their course over many years. I was pretty surprised to learn that most gang members would exit that lifestyle by age 18. I actually thought that was when they would be in their prime even though I know they start at such an early age. The economic status of an area I believe has such an impact on motivating individuals to choose conduct involving the illegal activities of gangs. I think having a prosperous society makes it easier for parents to maintain a healthy home and that’s where the foundation can then be set for our youth to be successful.

All over the world people are affected by drugs and gangs. I got a chance to learn about how to prevent that from happening to me. My G.R.A.D.E teacher told us a very scary story. A boy who had prefect grades and was popular, was caught stealing a video game. I know never to do this because not only would it effect my future, it also will affect my family.

I believe that the thug life is a lifestyle consisting of rebellion, risk taking; however, living the thug life doesn’t mean the person is part of a gang, but part of a family that has their back. A thug will help a thug out no matter what; if you are part of the thug life, you are a part of a family and part of a bond that cannot be broken. Additionally, the thug life instills pride and empowerment because a thug won’t allow institutions such as the government dictate what they can or can’t do; they don’t let the government’s restrictions hinder them from doing what’s necessary to succeed.
