Character Changes In Night By Elie Wiesel

In life, people go through different changes when put through difficult experiences. In the book Night, Elie Wiesel is a young Jewish boy whose family is sent to a concentration camp by Nazis. The story focuses on his experiences and trials through the camp. Elie physically becomes more dehumanized and skeletal, mentally changes his perspective on religion, and socially becomes more selfish and detached, causing him to lose many parts of his character and adding to the overall theme of loss in Night.

Have you ever changed or have the people around you changed out of survival? People who survived the holocaust changed because of what they went through so they could survive. Just like Elie he survived Auschwitz and he will never be the same person he was before the concentration camps. In “Night” by Elie Wiesel, the main character, Elie developed into a new person through his experiences at Auschwitz Concentration Camp and survived.

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” - George Bernard Shaw. George Shaw’s famous quote describes that to achieve, you must change yourself. On May 1944, Elie Wiesel and his family were forced out from his home in Sighet, Romania to live in Auschwitz, Germany. He and his two older sisters survived the holocaust, Elie then wrote his experience in 1960. During the span of the book, “Night” by Elie Wiesel, the novel demonstrates that traumatic events can change a person drastically. In the beginning, Elie lived with his family in Germany, his mother, his father, and his three siblings. The Germans forced the Jews to hand over their valuables, live in ghettos and finally moving them to concentration camps, including Elie’s family. He was disunited from his mother and three siblings, but managed to stay with his father. At first when he entered the camp he was pessimistic and discouraged when he saw the townspeople crying including his father. After, Elie then learned to take care of himself and his father during tragic events, he stuck to his ambitions and values which led him to go through many obstacles , despite the limitations, and be free of the camp of Auschwitz. As he set out Eliezer was an immature and carefree 15 year old who developed into a responsible young adult.

During Eliezer’s suffering, he announced “How good it would be to die right here”(76). Obviously, during the holocaust people suffered dearly, which during the time made Elie say that. Eliezer may have survived the odious events of the Holocaust, but the ways it has affected him will have changed Eliezer forever. Elie Wiesel’s immediate and most easily recognized changes throughout the memoir were his physical changes. At the beginning of the memoir, Eliezer is in good condition and does not have any disabilities.

Why do people change? So many people’s thoughts and feelings changed during the Holocaust. They changed for the better, or for the worse. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, the main character, Elie, changes through the horrific events he experienced in the concentration camp, known as Auschwitz.

In the non-fictional memoir, Night by Elie Wiesel, the concept of conflict is present. Eliezer faces many mental hardships and conflicts. He also has disagreements with other characters throughout the book. Obviously Wiesel uses the conflicts of man vs. himself and man vs. man to prove one of the underlying themes of the memoir: Hope is an invisible concept; nonetheless, people will not relinquish.
