Nick's Love for the Gatsby in The Great Gatsby

Nick and Gatsby can both relate to wanting the girl that they can't have. For Gatsby, his dream girl is Daisy. They had a relationship but then Gatsby had to go into war and they hadn't seen each other for five years. All Gatsby thought about was seeing daisy again, he even bought a house across a lake from her. Daisy obviously moved on because she married Tom, a rich socialite but their relationship is toxic. A quote to support this statement is “Look!” she complained. “I hurt it.” We all looked- knuckle was black and blue. “You did it, Tom, she said accusingly. I know you didn't mean to but you did do it. That's what I get got marrying a brute of a man, a great, big, hulking physical specimen of a-”( ). This shows that Tom is abusive and he is a very ignorant and disrespectful human being. Gatsby's has always had an undying love for Daisy and he states that they should be together. Revealing the extent of Gatsby’s commitment to his dreams, he is sure that the past can be repeated. One of his dreams is to be with Daisy and he worked hard to renovate himself just to get her back. “...And for a moment I thought I loved her but I am slow-thinking and full of interior rules that act as brakes on my desires” (Fitzgerald 58). In the period of the 1920’s, there was a certain status of wealth that was difficult to achieve. There were two societal classes consisting of those with wealth from prior generations, and those who worked to earn it themselves. Tom, Daisy, and Nick, who represented the old money society did not have to work hard, unlike Gatsby which he represented the new money and they had to work to earn money. People like Gatsby, who gained their wealth on their own often fought for the approval from the upper class who inherited their wealth. Rather than having new money and old money, people who tried achieving the American Dream and ended up in failure usually they end up like George and Myrtle Wilson In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the notion that social norms in the upper class depict the idea that being apart of it was impossible unless they were born in it was expressed through Daisy’s rejection of Gatsby because of the corrupt way in which he gained his wealth, making his American Dream unattainable.

Jay Gatsby, grew up poor, but he had a plan to be successful. Everyday he followed a strict schedule and lived by certain rules that included “No more smoking or chewing, bath every other day, read one improving book or magazine per week, save $5.00 [crossed out] $3.00 per week, be better to parents” (Fitzgerald 194). He aspired to be among the wealthy and made it a priority to learn manners. At Gatsby’s funeral, his father told Nick, “Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something. Do you notice what he’s got about improving his mind? He was always great for that. He told me I eat like a hog once, and I beat him for it” (Fitzgerald 108). Gatsby believed in the American Dream; he believed that a poor boy like him could become successful. This aspiration to be accepted into the upper class is why he fell in love with Daisy. She represented everything he wanted: money, success, and love. Nick even described her voice as “full of money” (Fitzgerald 99). That is why he was so determined to get her. “What constrains Gatsby is his extreme romanticism, his belief in the American myth that one, through hard work, can achieve anything, whether reliving the past or marrying Daisy in proper social splendor in Louisville so as to confirm his rise in American society” (Hays). What Gatsby did not know is that the American dream is just that, a dream.

The Great Gatsby, first published in 1925, echoes its era, and predicts its tragic end. In the novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald “revealed the negative side of the period’s gaiety and freedom, portraying wealthy and attractive people leading imperiled lives in gilded surroundings” (Danzer 656).It illustrate “the dying American Dream and the corruption of historical values”(Bewley 23). The wealthy characters in the book are careless, materialistic and empty, showing the corrupt side of the American Dream, but Gatsby is different. In the novel, Nick describes him as having “an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such I have never found in any other person and which is not likely I shall ever find again” (Fitzgerald 2).He kept believing and fighting for his dreams to the very end, even after it became clear that Daisy would not leave Tom to stay with him.

In the novel, The Great Gatsby, the author, F Scott Fitzgerald, expresses the reality of the ‘American Dream’ through a series of unfavorable events set in the 1920s. The American Dream is to work hard young and retire early while being rich and in love. The character Jay Gatsby is chasing this dream throughout the novel. Gatsby has almost everything to complete the dream, he is rich, young, and in love but, the girl he loves, Daisy, is married to another man. Daisy’s husband, Tom, is rich and young the problem in their relationship is that they do not love each other. The two lovers, Daisy and Gatsby become reunited through a mutual acquaintance named Nick. Nick is Gatsby’s neighbor, Daisy’s cousin and the narrator in this novel.

Jay Gatsby’s sole purpose in life is to achieve the American Dream: to become a land owner, married to the love of his life, who live in comfort and abundance. However, he never gets everything he wants as his love for Daisy is not as fully reciprocated as he wishes it to be. His dream, and the one Nick pursues as well, are only dreams in the end. The culture of the time only gives empty fulfillment with no real substance. The people, like their dreams, are only illusions of what they want to be.
