Animals are all around us - they are valued as pets and an important part of human society. Because of their involvement in our lives, it is important to protect them and their rights as living beings.

Most people have come across animals used for entertainment purposes, whether it be in zoos or theme parks like Seaworld. Zoos and establishments like Seaworld attract millions of people year round, because what is more interesting than seeing an elephant, or an orca whale up close? In our society, is has become common for the public to travel to these types of places. They are seen as the perfect place to vacation for a day, or to just spend time with family. Children especially love to see exotic animals in person, rather than just reading about them, or watching shows about them. Not many people think about how immoral it is for us humans to take animals from the wild and hold them captive for entertainment. Captive animals are often deprived of everything that is natural and important to them, and they experience captivity-related health problems as a result.

Peta investigation found a farmer killing injured turkeys by beating them with a metal rod, leaving them alive and tossing them aside to slowly die. The industry deemed this act as legal and ignored the farmers beating the turkeys. Many turkeys were taken to the slaughter sick and half dead for being loaded on the transportation truck and given no water or food and traveling through unforeseen weather conditions. Movies, TV shows, circuses, and illegal gatherings in an old car garage are all places that animal abuse has taken place for the entertainment of humans. They should have laws and procedures on how to do it right and not put the animals through so much pain and suffering. Remember Cecil the Lion? A lot of people were shocked, even outraged, when they heard about his death at the hands of an American hunter in 2015. The response to the lion’s death was so strong that the guy who shot Cecil basically went into hiding until he issued an apology. Our society reacts with horror when we hear about a majestic lion being shot or sacks of kittens being tossed into rivers, or owners training their dogs to fight each other for sport. However, what is the difference between killings Cecil and killing a duck, deer, cow, pig, or a chicken? How do we reconcile the strong feelings many of us have about certain animals, mainly the cute ones like kittens and puppies, with the way we actual use animals in our own lives?

Think about how we will look back on our cruel forms of entertainment in the future. Will we be proud of the way we treated these great animals, with abuse as neglect? Today we turn our heads away from reality and what happens behind the scenes of animal entertainment. However, we can’t turn our heads forever. Around the world, there is so much more to animal entertainment than what meets the eye. These animals have been torn away from their beautiful, natural homes and brought to a prison of concrete. In these prisons, they are beaten, starved and tortured all for our money and entertainment. These animals lives should not be taken from them for us. Our money and happiness should not be worth these animal’s lives. Circus, theme park and zoo animals all suffer from aggression towards trainers, mental disabilities and physical injuries. These animals should not have to suffer any longer.

Throughout time humans have forged sympathy for numerous animals, created from the relationships we have developed over time, bonding and interacting with them. We have a grimace look with an animal that's been physically abused or a farm animal being butchered for the meat that eventually make its to the grocery shelf. Having watched videos on supermarket suppliers we don't realize the apathy of some various meat, dairy and egg industries that settle their animals in heinous conditions and have utter negligence for their sentience. It becomes certain that these wondrous animals who provide us with an ecological resource are not respected and action is necessary to punish those individuals. As a society we sometimes disregard the death of some animals, it's unfair but we are just biased on the affection we show to certain animals.

Each year billions of animals are being tortured, blinded, scaled and used. Humans create these devastating events that occur. Animals experience pain and confusion throughout their life. There is great entertainment seeing animals in circuses and zoos but, there is a very dark side on how the animal performs. An elephant is beaten and trained until they are stripped from their spirit. Breeders are breeding large amount of animals, and shelters are becoming increasingly crowded. Animals are even sharing breathing space. The ignorance of our society is convincing that breeding animals are honorable. In reality, society is not just using animals for entertainment and breeding, but mass production of food. People are killing these animals

One case of animal abuse in the U.S. food industry is the Central Valley Meat Co, located in Hanford, California. Employees at the Hanford Slaughterhouse were caught on video killing cows violently and inhumanely, neglecting to render cows unconscious before slaughter, and other forms of abuse. Many of the cows appeared to be sick and unable to walk as well. Under federal rules, sick animals can’t be slaughtered for human consumption. (Nidever)

Around the world, animals are an important aspect of the entertainment industry. They are seen in movies, zoos, aquariums, circuses, and even in cultural events such as Spanish bullfighting. However, despite all the joy and profit these various companies and organization produce, there is great discrepancy among the many standards of animal welfare implemented in each institution. Different organizations accredit companies with their own set of requirements. It is clear that a uniform system of accrediting animal entertainment should be implemented to ensure animal safety and wellbeing (Hutchins, 2003). Inside and outside of the United States there are organizations taking advantage of a lack of enforcement of welfare standards to abuse animals for profit (Colier, 2015). Animals are left to suffer as corporations rake in the cash. There be a stricter enforcement of animal safety and an adoption of a uniform policy that covers all areas of animal entertainment.

There are many types of animals used for entertainment such as circuses, dog fighting, zoos, and rodeos. All of these types of entertainment are not natural for these animals which is a form of abuse. Often times they are wild animals that don’t belong in cages and are not able to do things that are in their instinct to do. This is especially true about zoos and circuses. Animals are not able to roam free and instead kept in small cages. Even in optimal settings experts say that it is difficult to provide for the needs of wild animals.(Lemonick) Children should learn to respect animals and not see them as entertainment. People should only support animal free circuses and raise awareness how animals are abused for entertainment.

Humans have always had a complicated relationship with non-human animals. This relationship has always benefitted the needs of humans, with little consideration for animals’ needs. Some animals are tortured for entertainment, some are butchered for food and others are taken from their habitat and family, and forced to be pets for humans. These are all examples of the ways humans have exploited animals for their own satisfaction. Training is another concern. Physical punishment has long been the standard training method for animals in circuses. These methods are simply cruel. They include the use of electric prods, whips, and even some animals especially large cats, have their teeth removed. Bears balancing on balls, apes riding motorcycles, elephants standing on two legs are acts that are physically uncomfortable and behaviorally unnatural. Such “performances” do not teach audiences about how animals behave under normal circumstances. Instead, they are often portrayed as ferocious and stupid.
