While we can’t deny the fact that the Columbian Exchange had a lasting impact on the New World, many of its effects were negative rather than positive. The introduction of European diseases devastated the Native American population, along with the terrible conditions they were forced to live in. Additionally, the Europeans did not treat the Native tribes as people, but rather as savages who could be used for labor.

When you are sitting in a fancy restaurant in Texas, tasting a delicious steak with a nice cup of coffee, do you know that before 1492, American people don’t even know what is beef and coffee. Nowadays, people’s diet is abundant. People in every part of the world can taste the food originated in other side of the world. This is due to one of the most significant ecological events in human history called the Columbian Exchange. According to Nunn Nathan and Qian Nancy, “the Columbian Exchange refers to the exchange of diseases, ideas, food crops, and populations between the New World and the Old World following the voyage to the Americas by Christopher Columbus in 1492” (Nathan and Nancy, 2010). It was so spectacular that has left both positive and negative impacts in each side of the world.

Imagine you and your family are living in the Americas during the fifteenth century. You live an average life, until one day everything changes. Europeans come to the Americas bringing disease, slaves and weapons. They kill 85-90% of your native people; your family and friends. This is what the Columbian Exchange was like for the indigenous people of the Americas. The Columbian Exchange was detrimental because it spread diseases, it brought the slave trade to the Americas, and killed many native people.

Was the Columbian Exchange primarily a good thing or a bad thing? Though there were many good and bad results from the Columbian Exchange, overall, the Columbian Exchange was a good thing because, not only did it allow for a more even distribution of food across the globe, but it brought the world together and increased our knowledge overall as it pertains to the societies of our world.

The exchange brought much valuable products, crops, livestock, and etc., which was beneficial to the New World. Furthermore, tragedy struck very hard when the Spanish brought the smallpox disease to the naives. I would say the Indians really suffered from the diseases by dying and the remaining Indians suffered when the Europeans forced them to give up their land. The Columbian Exchange definitely made a difference in today’s society, but was also able to manipulate world good and evil.
