Society is very familiar with all the rising social media platforms that teenagers are using like Snapchat, Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook. Those are some of the most popular apps that teens are using. But how have all those social media platforms shaped my generation? Social media has been labeled as a positive tool but overall adults have seen it as a harm to teens. Many parents have agreed against their children using those social media platforms because of the many incidents that have surfaced involving kids and teenagers. The most common dangers that parents think about have been that kid’s have been bullied and have received death threats or even self-harmed. The social media platforms that are a popular among teens are being used as a way to express themselves, proving others who is strong, and to be social and covered with friends but those decisions have brought them negative consequences in one way or another.

Even though this matter has existed for a long time, it’s adapted into a newer form called cyberbullying. Taunts and insults are no longer thrown around on just the school playground anymore. Now, it can be almost impossible to avoid bullying with the creation of social media. It has become effortless to post harmful comments towards others for a user’s own satisfaction. One of the worst parts is that there are little to no repercussions. Cyberbullies, if kicked off of a server or have an account revoked, can come back to the online world quickly and easily. For victims, there may be no escape besides quitting social media completely. Some feel that cyberbullying affects them more than regular bullying because anyone can see it and the criticism can remain in the online realm forever (Fritz). Many victims of bullying can become depressed or develop anxiety disorders because of their experiences. One cyberbullying victim, 14-year-old Matthew Homyk, was driven to suicide by what users anonymously posted about him online. From telling him that he had no friends to directly demanding that he kill himself, the comments were endless. His father told him to simply stay away from the website in which the bullying took place. After a short break from the website, Matthew returned, telling his father, ”’I can’t not know what people are saying about me’” (Dickey 44). It can be very difficult for adolescents, especially those who are being cyberbullied, to simply stop using social media. As stated earlier, some young users can easily get hooked on social media. It may be even harder to quit when the user knows that others are talking about them. Matthew’s tragedy is just one of many that occur because of cyberbullying. The negative effects of social networking on youth and young adults are; cyber bullying, antisocial, lack of independence, makes someone less patient, lack of confidence in their physical appearance, identity theft, cyberstalking, sharing too much, decrease in productivity. Cyberbullying is when someone is rude and disrespectful and bullies someone else online. Antisocial is when you are unable or struggle to talk to someone in real life or face to face. The lack of independence is when someone is unable to be independent and now relies on someone else. And impatient is when someone is unable or struggle to tolerate delay or is quickly irritated. This can cause them to do terrible things such as committing suicide or cutting themselves and can make them very depressed. Antisocial is a negative effect because they will be unable and struggle to talk to people in real life. This happens when they are texting and aren’t really talking to anyone for a long period of time. Then when they do talk to someone in real life they struggle because they lost all of their confidence in themselves. This is bad when they go for an interview or they are ordering food, or even when they are meeting someone new. When victims of cyber bullying are publicly put down, it can be frightening and destructive. The effects of cyber bullying on its victims are nothing other than pernicious. Though most effects that cyber bullying inflicts on its victims are minor to moderate (ex. Depression or low self-esteem), some cases have resulted in suicide or attempted suicide, which wistfully, I have personally heard of on numerous occasions. Social media has become an essential in life for a teenager. It is a place where teens can connect to the internet and share experiences with their family and friends that no one really sees. In most situations, social media is a fun place to go to entertain oneself. However, the use of these sites can be risky to teens. Social media has put teenagers in situations that are both dangerous and harmful physically and mentally. This being said, social media can negatively affect a teenagers safety, psychological well-being, and their education.

While cyberbullying affects each child differently, there has been a clear correlation between victims and non-victims and their self-esteem. In one study, bullied victims had less self-esteem than those who were not bullied online. Additionally, it was reported that victims of cyberbullying were thirty percent more likely to think about committing suicide (Cyberbullying Research Center, 2012). With the lack of parent supervision, it was found that those who spent more than three hours per school day on social networks were 110% more at risk to be a cyberbully victim as compared those who do not spend as much time online (Gilkerson, 2012). What may be worse is the fact that majority of those bullied online do not tell their parents or an adult about what occurred. Despite the fact that most adolescents state that bullying occurs more offline then online, cyberbullying is still a real and large threat to the youth of America (Lenhart, 2007).

Cyberbullying is a big issue in the world right now. With the growth of technology over the past decade, more and more people have become acquainted with it. People do everything on technology nowadays. From talking to friends, to playing games, and even doing your banking. But there are people who use technology for unjust. Not criminals even though the things they do could be counted as crimes in some people’s eyes. Bullying, antagonizing, or oppressing; all of these are unjust. These actions push and beat down their victim mentally through social media and private messages. There are many different reasons why people bully. It could because of the jealousy, a way to become popular, anonymity, getting even, others are doing it too, or they have been the victim before. Theses beatdowns of abuse can take a toll on the victim. The victim could start a eating disorder, self-harming, push away people, and worst case scenario is suicide. Even the bully will have bad effects from their actions such as guilt, regret, and trauma. The effects of cyberbullying are horrific and it should be stopped.

For decades, physical bullying has been a constant problem for young individuals today. Bullying is any “Unwanted aggressive behavior(s) by another youth or group of youths who are not siblings or current dating partners that involves an observed or perceived power imbalance and is repeated multiple times or is highly likely to be repeated” (stopbullying.gov). Social media is one of the most dominant activity young individuals participate in. The more social media that are being created and distributed to the teens are steadily increasing and causing more people to cyber bullying, although there have been certain restrictions set into place to stop cyber bullying it is still affecting teens today, without law enforcement and parents involvement youth are more at risk of negative effects of cyberbullying, such as unhappiness and suicides. Cyber bullying can be defined in many different ways such as, when an individual is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another individual by using the Internet, interactive, and digital technologies with mobile phones included.

Bullying has existed for generations. Bullying use to occur face- to –face; you knew who the bullies were and where they lived. Because of available technology, a bully can be totally anonymous on the internet. Technology advancements, internet and social networks have produced a new method of bullying called cyberbullyimg. Cyberbullying incidents have become widespread in the past few years. According to DoSomething.org,” almost sixty percent of young people say that they have been cyberbullied before. Sixty-eight percent of teens agree that cyber bullying is a serious problem. Eighty-one percent of young people think bullying online is easier to get away with than bullying in person” (11 Facts 2013). Cyberbullying is a serious problem with devastating consequences and we should be doing everything possible to control it.

As the use of technology continues to increase, the disadvantages also continue to increase. In today’s time, everyone has a smart phone, or access to the internet. In adolescents, 24% of teens are on social media almost constantly and 71% are active on at least one social media site per week (Lenhart, 2015). Within the last decade cyber bullying has become the newest form of bullying, while 9% of students in grades 9-12 have experienced bullying, 15% of high school studens, alone have experienced cyberbullying in the last year (“Stop Bullying”). Adolescents are typically targeted on the internet by those who have been bullied before, to gain power, or to get revenge on someone. Cyberbullying has harmful psychological impacts on adolescents. Those whom are cyberbullied are at a higher risk for depression and feeling sad and lonely. Adolescents are also likely to struggle mentally, physically, and socially.

Did you know bullying is a leading factor in teen’s suicide rate here in the United States? Bullying is the act of using physical force or verbal use against an individual to make them feel uneasy or bad about themselves. In today’s society we see it more than usual and what’s the response people do. Nothing they absolutely do nothing and walk away like they didn’t see anything happening. Another form of bullying that is growing and picking up pace in society is cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the use of using social media or any means of communication that could be like text messages and Facebook to attack an individual behind closed doors. The aspect of cyberbullying that individuals love is the ability to remain anonymous and attack a wider range of individuals over a short time of period rather than using direct confrontation. With social media being a fingertip away we can easily send a Facebook status or a tweet out like that cyberbullying is picking up steam and more and more people are becoming a part of the problem instead on the solution. With the elimination of direct confrontation the individual doesn’t know who is attacking him or her and cannot do much in the process of putting a stop to it or even ask help to make it stop.
