Ever since I was in elementary school, I have had a strong fascination with literature. Overtime, I had a plethora of books lining my bookcases and barely had room for any more. Reading was a necessity to me and it still is to me today. I eat, sleep, and breath literature because I feel like it’s essential to my academic career. Literature does many wonderful things like, teach me about life lessons, transport me to a new world that I have only dreamed about going to, and discover new vocabulary. My love of literature eventually led to my love for writing and the one person responsible for that is James Baldwin. He is one of the most beloved writers of the twentieth century and the sole reason why I began to take an interest in writing
During my past writing experience, I have struggled with formulating and initiating interesting points of discussion, grammar, and transitions. I have often sat down to work on a paper and found myself completely drawing a blank on anything interesting to write about. Whether I am given a specific prompt or general topic to discuss, I constantly struggle with finding a starting point. Once I do, I become too focused on trying to create a poetic sounding paper, rather than focusing on the main discussion points. In some ways, focusing on making my papers poetic have added detail and depth to my writing. However, this frequently distracts me from my papers main theme. One of my biggest drawbacks with writing has always been proper grammar usage.
My experience have been good but not so good. I'm not the best writer I struggle to get my ideas down.
Growing up I always knew I loved to read. There was a time when I thought reading was just for school not for anything else. When I started to get into sports I started to enjoy reading sports magazines online articles, and that made me enjoy reading about my favorite athletics their stories and how they became what they are and how they did it. Soon enough I saw myself finishing the whole article or the magazine. Part of that made enjoy reading more, and that made like to read other than sports so I started to read about history because I always was fascinated with what happened in the past, but I just never put the time to read about it. Which made me challenge myself to see if I can read a book or an article or something that I wanted to check it out and read about
Throughout High School, my writing experiences have been different depending on the teacher. During my four years I have had English teachers who either treasure reading their students papers or the exact opposite. Coming from Middle School I loved writing because my teachers always made it exciting for me. Freshman year my teacher had our class only write two essays. She did not even read them judging off of the fact that everyone in the class received an A, therefore I learned nothing. When I moved onto tenth grade I still had a passion for writing even after a bad year of English, but when we starting writing the persuasive research paper I fell in love more. Throughout this semester, I have personally developed and improved as a writer, through the weekly writing tasks set for the writers Journal. This procedure of composing Journal entries and assessment tasks involves critical reflection on the information provided and on myself developing those skills. During my school years, books were always as a part of my life, reading gave me joy, swept me towards my memories and took me along Journies never been before. However, I never thought of myself as a writer, composing short stories, writings and texts for others to read. As a person who enjoys the subject of English, I feel safe to say that I do have a love for reading and writing. Reading helps me escape to another world, and developing a well-written essay is very satisfying. My favorite genres are historical/science fiction, and I’m a fan of dystopian novels. Oddly enough, the wretched societies and brutal experiences within these books cause me to look at life with a better perspective, and it opens my eyes as to of what could be, and what is. My strengths as a reader include my ability to decipher a piece of text, and read quickly enough to complete a book within a couple of days. Contrarily, I find it very difficult to get myself through books which I may not feel a connection with, and that tends to
English has always been an awkward subject for me. Growing up in a Russian speaking household, I always felt at a disadvantage compared to other students. Throughout high school and the start of college I chose to stray away from writing by pursuing a majority of math and science courses through engineering studies. I despised writing essays and I never enjoyed spending my time reading and writing. As someone who claims to be a logical thinker it was hard to translate my thoughts and opinions into writing. I tried escaping English any chance granted to me.
Writing has been in the human civilization for thousands of years ago and it has been a way to convey messages and laws. It has evolved as time passes by. Now, writing is used for everyday activities. Some people really are passionate in writing. However, some people do not feel the same. They tend to be stressed when they write because they do not know what to write, and I am one of them.
Who comes to mind when defining an exceptional writer? King, Shakespeare, or perhaps Hemingway? Far away from these talented writers I find myself defining a good writer as someone with passion. Throughout the course of my writing experience I feel I’ve transitioned from being inarticulate to being open minded and finally leading me to have a goal on my fluency and creativity.
My first college writing experience consisted of several resumes and cover letters for the various work-study jobs that I applied to. Prior to that, I have constructed numerous essays where I primarily critiqued the literary works of many well-known authors. In junior year of high school, I critiqued the notable poetry of a unique author-- Wislawa Szymborska. The poetry Szymborska wrote was very intricate and rich in subliminal messages. Her poetry usually disregarded the use of rhyme, and instead focused on the sophisticated use of metaphors and allusions. In addition, I continued to evaluate other notable literary works in my senior year of high school. My English teacher instructed me to analyze the poetry of John Donne-- who focused on constructing short poems which reflected complex messages through the use of extended metaphors. I
Life is weird and unexpected. You don’t know what is coming up or what is going through. You don’t know what’s next, but you do have choices, plans and Images of your future. My first experience with reading and writing started when I chose to attend an out siding high school in other city. It was a school for top students, and it was my source to learn about writing, actually it was my beginning to have an intensive courses in English. Growing up within a family with a tremendous passion of reading, I have been captivated by books since my childhood. My father was a very good reader and I my eldest brother is a poet. I, therefore, inherited a priceless treasure of books and was surrounded by an atmosphere that highly appreciate reading. I like reading about history, religion, fiction, and poetry. Particularly, literature in all of its forms, has sparked my love of reading amd inspired me to study English as undergraduate student and now I am a graduate student, majoring in English literature at UNO.
I have been writing essays since middle school, gaining experience from multiple teachers all of whom had unique ways of imparting their skills on me as well as my classmates. Barring the basic learning of Writing in middle school, most of my writing thus far has been gained in literature classes. Because they were not solely writing classes, the goal of understanding the literature that was being studied was often placed above improving my writing skills. Almost all of the writing completed in the literature classroom setting were centered on displaying an ability to grasp the concepts from the literature or to prove a concept related to the literature. I also wrote a number of descriptive essays in which I had to write fictional stories in great detail. “I either go to television or turn on the radio in my car” (Whitefield 2011). Before I started this class, that is what I thought about when someone asked me “Do you keep up with the news?”. Most people do not get the opportunity to learn about what is going on around the world in their everyday lives and how they can help out. I feel that being in this class I got the chance to learn more about life and what is happening everywhere, not just insignificant matters such as who Kim Kardashian is now dating or why Kylie Jenner got more lip injections, I am learning about the important things. I am getting the chance to learn about how I can participate in the world to make big changes because of reading The New York Times, “Why Local Newspapers,” and “Freedom is Intended as a Challenge.”
