My Nursing Philosophy

Everyone in nursing school has a different opinion on what nursing actually is, but to me, nursing is something that has hit home ever since the day I decided to change my major and pursue nursing as my career path. To me a nurse is someone who is there for you when you’re at your worst. They not only help you physically in a time of need but a good nurse will also try to help you mentally. A great nurse will not only help you physically and mentally but also put in a real effort to educate you so that you may use that knowledge in order to prevent further illness or injury. When someone gets a great nurse, it is like flying private, you will never want anything else rather than the best. What makes nursing unique? In a today’s world with a society that wants things instantly and the gratification that comes with that feeling, it can be almost natural to look over the small things. Nursing is a profession that takes time in learning all the tedious things that there may be, revolving around their client. Certain things such as the client’s emotional, physical, and mental status. My definition of what a nurse is, is someone in the healthcare industry who can not only care for a patient, but also be an advocate, educator, and friend. All of these things coming together in the health care system with each member associated within the healthcare working as a team all focused on one goal and that goal being to either get the patient healthier or to keep that patient healthy for the long term. Orem’s self-care model focuses on wholly compensated, partially, and supportive developmental care. In this model, health care is considered to be each individuals own responsibility. For nurses attempting to apply this theory to their field of practice, it is all about helping the patient to maintain or improve their health. In the International Journal of Caring Sciences (2015) it was written that “Orem defines the self-care requirement in three types. These are universal, developmental and health deviations.” With Orem’s self-care model, I agree that the nurse should try to help the patient understand that is important that they take care of their own bodies. However, I feel as if some people could use this theory to make it the patient’s fault that they’re sick or injured. Sometimes the patient can do everything in their power to stay healthy but yet still get sick or injured. So as a nurse it is important to keep an open mind in that anything can happen to anybody no matter how hard they try to prevent something. Another nursing theorist and their conceptual framework is Watson and her Human caring model. With Watson’s theory, she believed there should be a healthy balance between the philosophical approach and the systems theory.
