Classroom Management Plan Theoretical Introduction Philosophy of Classroom Management My personal belief is that teaching is not just the profession of spitting out information to students that they in turn regurgitate to me. I think that teaching is a process of life learning for these students. I believe there are four extremely important factors that distinguish a well-disciplined class from others. More importantly, creating positive student-teacher relationships can prevent discipline issues from arising. By establishing a persistent tone of mutual respect, students will participate in class activities with confidence that they and their opinions are valued. Students also should be taught how to appreciate the unique contributions each student brings to the class, as well as how to effectively resolve issues that may arise. I believe that demonstrating genuine respect to students and showing interest in their concerns will allow the effective use of instructional time, positive relationships to prevail, and minimal discipline problems to avail. Lastly, by actively engaging students in a variety of interesting activities that encourage critical thinking and discovery, time misbehavior is minimized. The key is preparation and participation. Having activities and lessons prepared will negate the acts of sleeping, misbehavior, and/or sitting idly for the bell to ring. Furthermore, collaborative strategies can be used to help students become self-reliant learners that take responsibility for their own learning. For instance, when students explain the purpose of learning the material, they can assess their own progress and the relevancy to their lives. The most important factor affecting student learning is the teacher. If the teacher is ineffective, students will achieve inadequate progress academically. Effective teaching and learning cannot take place in a poorly managed classroom. If students are disorderly and disrespectful, with no apparent rules and procedures to guide behavior, chaos becomes the norm. An essential tool to create a safe environment for students to learn is classroom management. I hope to create an effective classroom management plan that dissolves barriers that are stopping students from learning. I am highly committed to make my classroom a safe environment where my students are provided with the best opportunity to be challenged and engaged in learning. As a special education teacher, I seek to meet the needs of every student I work with, so they have a sense of belonging in my classroom. I believe belonging will create a classroom atmosphere that will be conducive to student-centered learning in which all students are challenged to be critical thinkers.
My philosophy of classroom management is that the management of elementary classrooms require several things. Among patience, determination and motivation are: flexibility, careful planning and consistency. A well-managed classroom did not get well-managed without a teacher who planned, had a flexible vision and was determined. Any new teacher, who is asked, will say they want a classroom with as few behavioral problems as possible as well as one that is easily manageable. But any experienced teacher, who is asked, will tell those new teachers that classrooms do not come "well managed". They have to be made into well-managed classrooms. My classroom management philosophy is rooted in B.F. Skinner’s Behavior Modification theory. I believe that negative and positive reinforcements are a key aspect in classroom management. Providing reinforcement increases the probability that a desired behavior will occur, while undesired behaviors will stop because they are not being reinforced (Manning and Bucher 47). Students who are demonstrating unacceptable behaviors may even begin to change their behavior in hopes of gaining approval through reinforcement (Manning and Bucher 47). In particular, I advocate for this theory because it also serves as another way to continuously reiterate classroom expectations. Through daily dialogue in the classroom, students will be able to understand which behaviors are supported, acceptable, and encouraged and which behaviors are ignored, unacceptable, and discouraged. Continuously putting this into practice will foster a supportive classroom climate with clear expectations. Throughout my field experiences in Horry County, I have seen this strategy used with success. I believe that once I have established relationships with my students this will be the most effective course of action for modifying their misbehaviors.

In my classroom, I will uphold the traits and characteristics that I want to see in my students, through my own actions and words. Another quality that I will instill in my classroom and myself is consistency. In my classroom, I will be consistent in my classroom management. I will not favor a student and let them get away with something, and I will not be overly harsh on a student who is having a bad day or week. When diving into the world of teaching, there are many important aspects that are essential in order to create a successful classroom environment; one in particular being, classroom management. Understanding what classroom management, classroom discipline, teacher characteristics, behavior management, and teacher organization are all crucial components of what makes a successful classroom. Of course, with every grade level comes a different style of classroom management; however, for this particular paper the targeted grade - level is lower elementary school.

My classroom management philosophy has developed through many years of teaching experience, but through it all I believe all students can learn and grow, even students with special needs. I teach in a classroom designated for slow learners, many of which have cognitive impairments. As an aspiring classroom teacher the management philosophy I believe that I agree with most is the assertive discipline by Lee and Marlene Cantor. The teacher should have the right and be responsible to tell the students what they see as an appropriate behavior and what is not as well as tell the students what is expected of them in the classroom. The teacher must create rules, rewards and consequences if this method is going to work in their classroom. They will also need the support of their students’ parents and administration. This will fit into my teaching style the easiest because it allows the teacher to set the expectations and what the students will get if they follow the rules and expectations and what will happen if they do not.
