Over the past few years I have really gained an interest in the way writers can influence different emotions onto their readers and how a simple sentence can change meaning based on how different audiences view it. I am intrigued by the way authors can manipulate different emotions by expressing individual thoughts yet also encouraging the reader to express their understanding of the texts. Language is a subject that defines us personally, it is universal but yet still define us as individuals. My decision to study English is based on my desire to enhance my understanding of how we, as humans, speak and interact with each other on a daily basis. Although the linguistic element is something I have only recently studied, I have a strong interest in analysing the precise elements of the English language, more specifically the relationship between the spoken features of a text based upon who is listening. …show more content…
Not only has this course allowed me to expand in my writing, it has also made me aware of how features, such as phonology, is used and how I am able to adapt and change how I speak based upon who I am trying to communicate with. As I currently study English Literature and Language I have been given opportunities to specifically analyse a text from a literary and linguistic perspective, this has allowed me to analyse, the purpose of a text and the reasons behind why it portrays what it does. David Crystal’s ‘How Language Works’ has really helped me reflect on how English has changed over thousands of years and highlights the science behind the
In the past two months i fell like i have accomplished a great deal. As i focus on it more i realize i have become a better reader. I did this by concentrating on my readings and take my time to read them. With the help of my professor and classmates i began to analyze what i read.
In English 1102 students will learn many different techniques throughout the course to understand and compose an analysis on an array of topics. After the course is over it is up to the students to apply what they have learned to everyday life. Many students throughout this course have questioned why they have to learn this material and that it will not even help them in the real world, but they are wrong. Each and everyday people should look at the deeper meaning and analyze situations very carefully or else one may find themselves being deceived. Being able to analyze is a very important skill no matter what career choice you choose. In this course the material assigned also had many life lessons in them. A great example of a reading assignment
The five-minute warning bell goes off. I rush to my first class of my junior year, eager to see my classmates, who I was going to spend the rest of the 9 months with. I find myself stumbling into a classroom plastered with decorations of Denzel Washington with a Dr. Seuss book in his hand, a t and college flags galore. My AP English 11 class suddenly seemed so appealing to me. As a beautiful, curly haired short lady stood in front of me and said “Welcome to AP English 11,” I knew that I had found a treasure so much greater than just a pretty classroom. Little did I know, that short lady was going to inspire me throughout my challenge filled second-to-last year of high school.
English 111 has been a great course so far. I have been learning new material that will help me to improve my comprehensive English skills, such as speaking, reading and writing. In this course, we have covered many topics that usually are not presented or introduced to students in younger agers. Sexual harassment is one of the sensitive topics that we have discussed in details. I personally did not fully know what is the true definition of sexual harassment and what form of actions or phrases that we could say that would considered to be forms of sexual harassments or harassments in general. During lectures, we have looked cases of sexual harassments and how we can educate ourselves and be aware of this issue that our communities facing. Student were assigned to draw their thoughts and what they have
During the course of Mrs Wagner's Accelerated English 10 class I learned a tremendous amount. I learned all about things such as TIQA, ANT, verb tense. I also learned a gamut of vocabulary words. So over the course of the first semester I blossomed as a writer and Mrs Wagner showed me the hidden talents within my brain.
This transcript, an extract taken from one of the creative writing controlled assessments I submitted for my GCSE English Language studies, is a sociolect between two East-End Londoners. The complicity and the natural language employed within this private exchange denote a long-term relationship between two middle-class, middle-aged women, on the same intellectual level who are having a tease - a literal 'dig'- winding each other while carrying out casual gardening work.
When beginning any writing assignment, it can be a rocky start. It involves critical thinking and applying to your writing. First, you have to be skilled and be prepared in writing to get where you want to be. Therefore, my writing was complicated until I got into writing better than before. There comes a time when you have to start from scratch and work until you earn what you deserved. It was complicated to figure out what to write about, and to be precise. At first, I had adequate writing skills, but as I progressed through middle and high school, I have made vast improvements in my writing.
I sit in this AP Language and Composition class trying to decipher the essence of the unending annotations and floods of random texts for the past quarter. Little did I know that I would be taking flight and soaring through the smallest details and threads of literary devices and techniques of analyzing language. Before this class, I looked at a book, aware that it was filled with potential symbolism and crucial themes that were definitely worth considering. Yet, I often paid far less attention to the way words are crafted in efforts to create a beautiful masterpiece. Who knew that the jargon used in Snow Falling on Cedars could significantly shape the overall tone of the book? From the years leading up to this class, the
This letter is meant to be a way for you to get to know me on a deeper level. You are probably using this letter not only to get to know the lives of the students you are teaching, but also to learn about the writing behaviors of your students. So for this purpose I will try to keep my letter short and interesting in order to not mess up. Before we begin I have a quick disclaimer, I am very sarcastic in everyday life so that does show in my informal writing. I am usually professional for most major papers, but for this paper you will probably see my sarcasm. Now that we have gotten that out of the way let’s start this letter.
8:45 a.m. on a Tuesday; it is time to go to my English class. Excited and curious on what my classmates and I will read. Spending hours reading passages, short stories, fiction and learning how to analyze them developed my passion for reading. I’ve lived many lives and I’ve traveled to many parts of the world because I spend my free time reading novels. The way I see it, there’s a world in every book. Books aren’t just made up of sentences and paragraphs. Books are filled with lessons and meaning.
As I began this journey of obtaining a college degree at the age or thirty-two, I was given advice by a professor that will stick with me forever. As I was creating an essay in English 101, Dr. Andrea St. John wrote that we must own our work. She stated, “This paper, as well as every assignment that is turned in, is a direct representation of who you are as a person.” Clicking on the link in the assignment instructions I was unsure of what I was tuning into, but this was the mindset I had when I began my assessment. Looking at three positive elements of the content, along with three elements that could be improved it will be discovered how well I feel that the speaker did on his presentation. Finally, it will be discussed positive and negative
When first learning about 1011 option I had bittersweet feelings about it, I love English but I’m pretty lazy. Pretty much being forced into the class I went in skeptical on the course and instructor, asking myself “ do I need this extra work load”? Unless learning is love for someone, I’m sure anyone with the same option to take this course would think similarly. I’m here to tell you that the 1011 course is a worthwhile option for students. The class community, additional supports in 1010, and one on one with instructors make this class an awesome option for any student.
Within the English III class, my former experience in creative writing and affinity for classical styles of literature shall more than likely provide the ability for growth within the classroom. As a person who values differing perspectives, my ultimate goal is to obtain a variety of perspectives involving those in the course, as well as the literary discussions relating to real world social perspectives and morality. As a student I am aware of the need to make great efforts in not only becoming involved with the material, but learning to understand and analyze various styles of writing and grammar. despite my lack of experience in English college courses, it will be the strides I make both inside and outside of the classroom that leave a
. I wanted to register for Advanced Placement English Language and Composition because I wanted to receive advanced information regarding this subject so that I can utilize it when I take the English AP exam and the SAT and the end of this year. By taking this class I hope that I can receive a high score on my English AP exam, so that I can receive college credit for the course.
Throughout English composition 1 my grades have fluctuated drastically. Some papers were surprisingly great and some have been extremely bad. Overall though I have made minor improvements, maybe not specifically in each paper but overall as a writer I have. Although I have not and probably will never master the art of writing I know I have made myself better just in these past few months. This semester I faced the huge inconvenience of procrastination and over time I learned to change my method of writing; therefore, I could manage my time more wisely and put more effort into my papers.
