Art is an important part in human society. But what is the definition of art? It is something that has been with us since the beginning of mankind and has been evolving ever since. Since that time, arts have been a changing frontier and can imply many things. It can mean art through painting, architecture, video games, movies, etc.. People resonate with a specific kind of art they partake in and in this case music is my prefered form of art because it is meaningful to me in a spiritual, academic, and creative way. However most communities are extremely wary about music and its effects on us. They are saying that it is just a hobby and what we are experiencing is a placebo effect that educators in music have placed in our heads. But in this attempt to persuade and state the truths about the non-coincidental things happening in the minds of a musician. To show that playing music is no hobby but almost a necessity as we progress into the future. I must show off my personal and logical/statistical evidence to explain that the effects of music is real. The power of music can affect a person’s brain neurologically. This means how they think and what their mood is completely different than ones of a non-musician. Music can be applied to other things and not to music itself. It is a topic which can be connected to other things such as things in academia. (In this case math, science, english, etc..) But most importantly is what folks seem to undermine the most and that is the power
Do not get me wrong, the studies have proven how music can positively affect the brain and that music students tend to do better on standardized testing. This is a phenomenal discovery that was only proven to be true a few years ago. However, people are using this fact as their main argument and people who are not affiliated with the arts are getting this perception that music is only important to help with test scores. Recently, music was defined as a core subject. When people believe that music is only important because it helps with test scores that is the equivalent of saying that effective writing class is only useful to help with writing scientific conclusions. We live in a test driven society where students are measured by a number on a test rather than what they have to offer outside of the classroom.
Many might say that the arts are stereotyped as a pass time or an extracurricular activity; I envision it as a safe haven from stress and anxiety. Throughout the past 8 years, music has played an insurmountable role in my development into the individual I have become today. Through times of disappointment and dissatisfaction, I have always resorted to music as a way to relieve myself, whether it be playing or listening. Music thrives through me, and applies to every day of my life.
Music has been around since the very beginning of time. The human body flows in a rhythmic syncopation. Music is used to change one’s mood and to inspire those who open their minds. It has the potential to cure diseases such as Parkinson’s disease. Humans, of every culture and society, function with a type of rhythmic music. As humans, we are hard wired to respond to music (Mannes). The human brain responds to music in such a way that the brain becomes more open to new rhythms, ideas, and values. Music has the power to take over the human body. This makes it easier to overcome conflict and change the ideals of somebody while using music (The Power of Music).
“The system of understanding characteristics of that individual’s society, or of some subgroup within that society” (Trumbull and Pacheco 1). For example, being American could be your cultural identity, but for as long as you live in America you will be classified as an American and in that ethnic group. Being an American can be known as the main society, but an example of a subgroup could be Music and its culture within itself. Music is the society I personally belong in and is classified as my ethnic or cultural group. Music helps with my cultural identity because that is how I relate to the society that is around me and helps enhance my ethnic identity. Music also enhances my heritage because I am going to try to start a tradition of playing music in a band and try and influence the next generations of the family to play music. Music completely changes my perspective of the world and how I see others.
To deny the power of music is a waste of an excellent source, one important and extremely useful in the way we learn. Though some people would look at music as a step forward in the progression of humanity, it is known to be a much stronger force; and for some, it really defines their existence. Music is definitely a driving force in society: it has been in existence since the beginning of human race. The average human spends many hours a day listening to music, whether it’s taken as a main interest or just as something to satisfy us for the day. Music has and certainly had a great effect on how we think and act, for all one knows, affecting our intelligence.
Some people think that music can positively influence the listener while others disagree and argue that it has a negative impact. Mark Edmundson, the author of “Can Music Save Your Life?,” asserts through his own experience and the research of others that music solely “preserves” the listener’s life as a “balm—cortisone spread” (paragraph 25). His use of a well-known medical supplement makes it more relatable and believable to the reader. The authors of “Feeling the Beat” support Edmundson by stating that they observed an increased sense of confidence in oneself and one’s beliefs in the people they interviewed(Iwamoto, Creswell, & Caldwell 346). Their main support is the quote from one of their interviewee’s who said, “We can identify what they are talking about” (Iwamoto, Creswell, & Caldwell 343). This not only explains why students listen to certain types of music, but also why it can have such an impact on them. Derek Iwamoto, John Creswell, and Leon Caldwell declare their statement that positive influence of music by stating that the majority of the students they observed used their music as a way to
Although some may suggest music can only serve for entertainment, music imposes a direct impact on the ideals and actions of today’s culture. In the past, the music of a culture greatly impacts the people and speaks what the people felt afraid to express. Different types of music reach different areas of the human brain, thus affecting the way people act in various ways. Music possesses such a deep impact on human brains it affects the way we act and process different situations we go through. Although music can serve entertainment purposes it affects our brains and actions deeply.
Music, an art that allows people to have freedom of expression, has become such a big part of our lives and it allows people to have an insight in other people lives as well as experiences. Music has been a positive impact in life however there were several times when it has been criticize and consider demeaning to
For the sixteen years I have been on this planet, I have been exposed to music. From pressing colorful buttons on the Munchkin Mozart Magic© Cube I had as a child, to playing my clarinet every morning in my first period, concert band, I cannot recall a day in my life where I did not experience some form of music. Music has affected my life so greatly that I could spend a whole other paper explaining why I believe music is so important. I believe that the most exquisite thing music has to offer is it’s constant availability. I listen to music while doing homework, driving, completing chores, cooking, and even just falling asleep. Along with being a trusty companion, music has also been a helpful coping mechanism for many of the low moments life
Music, what does it mean? Music is a vocal or instrumental sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, or expression of emotion. Sometime music can have a positive or negative influence on people especially young people. Music has been around for ages but recently into the 70s and so forth music has become harsh and violent. Rock Music music for instance has been reasons behind many riots, murders, and acts of violent.
I remember when I had to do my chores in the house and the house was very quiet, so, I decided to listen to music. I don't enjoy doing chores, I would much rather be playing outside or watching TV so I did it to get it over with. But when I turned on my music it felt like the song changed my mood. I could feel it taking over my mind and I felt like I went faster. As I was washing I could feel my slumped gloomy body turn into a happy fast cleaning machine. The sound of music put me in a zone. The fast upbeat tempo made me feel amazing when I was done. The arts is needed when you need to take a break for reality for a few minutes and just
Music is the inventive procedure of making, performing, and reacting to sound for individual and aggregate importance. Through the procedures of making musical works, performing with voice and instrument, and reacting to our own particular and others' music, people and gatherings convey implications, convictions and qualities. Music engagement shapes our idea and movement, and is obvious from the most punctual phases of life. Music is a pervasive element of contemporary life. This is to a great extent since music, not at all like some other artistic expression, has the ability to successfully unite a gathering of individuals in light of a legitimate concern for a specific reason. In this way, while the experience of music serves to unite individuals
Musicians exhibit the benefits of a brain that processes information faster and potentially more thoughtfully than their peers. Musicians also show more precise control over their fine motor skills. Scientists from many countries have been able to consistently prove that musicians can even exhibit increased awareness of their tactile and auditory senses and differentiate between the two. There are also many job opportunities that musicians already have an advantage in, solely because their brain has already been trained to work the way it will need to work in the field. Musicians tend to benefit greatly due to their training, but even listening to music can promote a positive work or learning environment. Music has a great and lasting impact on a person’s life. Whether the person chooses to accept or deny music as a beneficial part of their life is up to them, but research has proven time and time again that music will help a person immensely outside of simply playing a nice
Music is a very important thing in my life not only is it my escape from my problems, but music is there for me when no one else is. Different genres of music have touched my heart and affected my life, from Rap to Alternative music. Though it wasn’t until my 7th grade year of school when, I realized the power that music could have on a person.
The definition of music is very different to many people. Some say that music is the arrangement of sound and silence. Others like myself say music is that and much more. Music is an aural form of art that is used to express emotion and touch the hearts of the listener through the use of phrasing, dynamics, style and tone color. Music is a very universal art form.
