I moved to California around one year and a half ago with my family. My parents decided to move here to give their daughters a better education and better opportunities. My parents are my biggest influence because they have helped me understand how important it is to work hard to achieve my goals. I learned that if I work for what I want, I can be very successful. My parents left their own house, land, jobs, and family just to give their daughters a chance to be successful in life. I think that seeing them give everything away just so that my sister and I can study and get our degrees is incredible. They have not only shown me to be independent and a hard working person, but they have taught me how to be considerate and selfless. I lived in
Did the Age of Jim Crow ever end? Americans see “race” as a defined, indubitable feature of nature. Racism- the act of ascribing bone deep features to people to then humiliate, reduce, and destroy them- inevitably follows from this inalterable condition. White supremacist ideals, for instance, espouse unfounded ideas that revere the white man and scorn those of color, while also serving as a nonsensical justification for practices such as slavery, racial segregation, and Jim Crow. In “The Trouble with Diversity”, Walter Benn Michaels dismisses the concept and veracity behind race, as if it weren’t a societal issue worth addressing. To ignore the reality of race would be the equivalent of ignoring the plight and shared experiences of minority groups. “The Trouble with Diversity” insinuates that “diversity” is incompatible with the society we live in; this does not mean that people of color should have to encounter racial prejudices, whether in subtle or discernible ways.
Does our common reader assigned to the class this semester adhere to the accustomed material when it comes to examining cultural diversity in the class? My conclusion is that our common reader The Trouble with Diversity by Walter Benn Michaels touches upon the social, socio-economic, health, and educational aspect of diversity. Observing how an individual’s status and race makes an impact on how they do in society as well as how they’re treated.
The purpose of this strategic diversity plan is to ensure Lamar County School District is abiding by its mission to provide a quality education with opportunities for all students to experience success. Recognizing a deficiency in our district, such as a lack of addressing learning obstacles for Hispanic/Latino students, is important to address so all students are successful attaining an quality education. Reaffirming the district’s core values of equality, mutual respect, lifelong learning, honesty, and responsibility will enable the district to relay these values to all of our students, including this group, to provide knowledge in this continuously diverse

On a regular occasion, when driving with males in a car, and there is somebody on the road making an error in driving, the comment always comes up that the driver must be a female. I know that it is said in jest, but it is a typical stereotyping comment which is made, which seems to be accepted by society. I don’t drive, so I don’t take offence to the comment, but I do stand up for other female drivers when the comment is made though, because I wouldn’t be surprised if other females, who do drive, do take offence to such a comment. Learning what I have now though, if a comment like that is said, then I won’t react to it. I will be tolerant towards the person saying it because they are obviously repeating something which is commonly said within society and said in jest. Even though the comment isn’t acceptable to me, I will learn to tolerate it.
Pursuing significance is not merely growing personally due to a challenging medical situation; it is choosing to live a life led for others because of overcoming adversity – to foster a compassionate connection with the community that will give the chronically ill an equal chance at flourishing. Selflessly acting as an agent for change via the promotion of acceptance and inclusivity of people with disabilities within society is significant. Becoming an attorney will allow me to live a life of significance by working toward successfully diminishing the stigma of disabled people being often perceived as helpless or faking their symptoms – since many disabilities are not physically visible – for sympathy from non-disabled people. Consequently, stigma related to disabilities is a major barrier to creating an inclusive community which can
I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas; to be more specific, the lowest income suburb of Dallas, Texas. The elementary school that I went to was the school for the lower income families and we were so equally diversified, that there was no such thing as a minority. Price Elementary was the name and the teachers were wonderful. They could have chosen to work in a school in a nicer neighborhood but they wanted to be there for children that really needed them. Although the school was great, the neighborhood was a rough place to raise a family. My parents worked very hard to move our family to Colorado Springs and to give their children a better opportunity. Their hard work has paid off. My brothers and I are all on great paths to success.
In the most simplest terms diversity and inclusion can be explained by diversity being the mix and inclusion is getting the mix to work well together. In broader terms, diversity is anything that can be used to differentiate groups and people from one another. This can be anything from life experiences, learning styles, personality types to race, gender, sexual orientation or even county of origin. These differences can be used to achieve quality teaching, learning and support services. Inclusion is used to describe a state of being valued, respected and also supported. The term is also used to describe the active, intentional and ongoing engagement with diversity. This also focuses on the need of every particular person and making sure that the right conditions are set for them to reach their full potential. Diversity is the balance in each individual in a certain group, whereas inclusion is the strategies that allow each person’s strengths to be welcomed and embraced.
“The weight of human domination has crushed the galaxy for too long. We will follow you wherever the flight may take us.”(Anderson 144)This quote relates to me because it reminds me of how slaves and african americans were treated horribly. like the alien species in the star wars universe were treated. It also talked a lot equality and there was a whole group in the star wars universe called the Diversity alliance dedicated to making peace between all species and their world a better
The diversity I have experienced during my childhood has best prepared me for life in the real world. I have attended an expensive private school with the children of senators, CEOs, and millionaires. I have lived in a two-bedroom condo with my single mother, two siblings and dog. I have worked jobs for as long as I was legally able to. I currently attend a public high school with people from all walks of life and different socioeconomic levels. I was raised to believe that your background does not define you – your character does.
I can contribute to diversity at The San Francisco Bay School by sharing my perspective, experience, and background with other students. Diversity is not only about race and culture, but also how people perceive the world. I am a visual learner, someone who prefers to learn by seeing examples. Even though I am a visual learner, that does not mean I do not understand different learning styles. I believe you must change your perspective and be open to new ideas. My perspective on learning is that there is always another way to solve a problem. Another way I can contribute to diversity at Bay is through experience. When collaborating with others for group projects, I can use my knowledge to do research and do my part to get the job done. For example,
For my leadership rubric I choose diversity. Understanding the diversity of a group is essential to creating a productive organization. Each person brings a history, culture, and a set of beliefs that shaped them into who they are now. These differences should be celebrated, because differences are what help organizations accomplish positive change.
If USA is the biggest ‘melting pot’ nation, then I believe UIC is the biggest ‘melting pot’ college. Since I attended Korean, Chinese and International schools, I am a person that not only has a broad understanding of different cultures, but also is open-minded to others’ views and values. So I am certain of my suitability in bringing diversity to UIC.
Awareness building “sensitizes employees to the assumptions they make about others and the way those assumptions affect their behaviors, decisions, and judgment” (Bateman & Snell, 2013, pg. 218). It is apparent to the astute observer, that Robert’s company is void of a formal diversity awareness program. If such a program existed, then Paul’s department of three years would not be all Caucasian. However, Robert takes action to correct his company’s course through the hiring of Jacqueline. Robert, as the senior manager, used the interview process to highlight a blind area in Paul’s leadership. Robert lays it out to Paul, “You were really very open and gregarious with Sonya. You weren’t to that level with Jacqueline” (McGraw-Hill, (n.d.), Manager’s
According to Jason Pontin, the promise of technological advancement that will provide the ultimate resolution to human problems has never been achieved. The development in technology seems to have narrowed down to something less than what was promised in the early 1970s when there was a super visit to the moon (TED, 2013). However, the Ted presenter (the influential journalist and editor-in-chief and publisher of MIT Technology Review), asserts that technology has a lot of power to solve the existing problems but only when there is right political and governorship with strong believe on technology. Because of Jason’s argument about the need of technology in solving today’s problems, this analysis evaluates how helpful technology is with regard to the creation of global awareness, cultural knowledge, diverse perspectives, worldview framework, cultural diversity, global systems and culture attitudes among others.
