Maslow identified that employees have the motivation to achieve certain needs. Once these needs have been achieved the employee will seek to fulfil the next set of needs.

In any workplace, workers are no doubt the essential mainstay that holds any business or corporation together. Employees achieve important tasks to help the company’s long term vision and goals to be successful and efficient. A business can’t be successful without a proper management that is why it is important for employees to enjoy going to work and they also have maintain a positive attitude while being productive and completing tasks. Motivation is what gives a person the purpose to perform or behave in a certain way with the desire or willingness to gain something. There are two types of motivations, motivation that comes from a person and motivation that comes from materially goals. It is very necessary that employers keep their employees motivated and encourage them to perform above expectations.

In this report we will be discussing Motivation and how it has a large impact on the way employees perform within the workplace. We will be addressing the many benefits of having an adequate amount of motivation within the organization and the employees in it. How motivation within the workplace affects the company productivity will also be mentioned within this report. As an example of a company that has been succeeding taking motivation as a large factor leading to company success, we will be discussing how CIBC has been implementing the motivation strategy within their organization to bring forth success.

Maslow’s Theory can be applied to many areas of human action and interaction, including management strategies of employee motivation. To fully understand how a hierarchy of needs can be applied to management, we must first look at the original work of Abraham Maslow and how it defines needs as motivational factors.

People are motivated by different rewards and therefore, a manager must know each employee’s reason to why they are working at the organization (Ivancevich, Konopaske and Matteson, 2014). Motivating workers can be one of the most challenging for management. Management should ask their workers what motivates them the most. If management has a hard time deciding the staff’s motivators, then he/she should ask them what would make them more eager and thrilled about doing their job. If the individual appears to be uncertain or undecided, then management should recommend different types of motivators. While they are making these recommendations, they should also listen and observe the employee’s reactions and responses. For the most part, employees want strong and well- defined goals, objectives, and expectations that are jointly understood and decided upon. They want a strong boss who is a great leader and he/she can lead and guide their actions. Also, they want respect and fair treatment. Motivation is one of the most important tools in today’s workplace. Managers use motivation to inspire and influence people to work, both independently and team-wise, to produce the most efficient and effective results and productivity. They want to inspire employees to work toward organization’s goals. Moreover, in order to have an impact on employees, managers need to identify and understand what factors drive their employees. Some questions that manager should ask include: What kind of work environment will motivate people? What are the necessary rewards, both intrinsic and extrinsic, to encourage high performance and help maintain motivated performance? In management and organizational behavior, there are numerous theories of motivation, this paper will look specifically at Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and its claim on what motivates people.

In today’s turbulent, often chaotic environment, commercial success depends on employees using their full talents. Yet in spite of the available theories and practices, managers often view motivation as something of a mystery. How are employees motivated? Maslow 's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology, proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper, “A Theory of Human Motivation”. His hypothesis stated that within every human being there exists a hierarchy of five needs. These needs are physiological: hunger, thirst and shelter; safety: security and protection from physical and emotional harm; social: affection, acceptance and friendship; esteem: self-respect, recognition, autonomy, and achievement; and self-actualization: the drive to grow and become something, achieving potential and self-fulfillment (Maslow, 1954). Maslow is still relevant to managers today. In order to motivate someone a manager must understand what level of hierarchy the person is on and focus on satisfying that level and those above it. The manager must also account for an individual’s intensity, direction and persistence since this also affects how a person attains their goals (Robbins & Judge, 2007).
