Although they are both big game hunters, their reactions to the life or death situations that they are put in could make a world of difference for themselves. When considering their actions, Rainsford would stop and think, whereas Eckels would panic and run, and not worry about the consequences that may take place. Rainsford from “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is a very smart man. He is very good at thinking on his feet and getting himself out of tricky situations. Eckels from “The Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury is a good hunter. He has killed many big game animals, but there is a limit on how big of an animal he can kill, some are just too much. Eckels and Rainsford are a lot alike, but yet extremely different, you are about to find out why. Rainsford is a world class hunter that has killed many big game animals and traveled all around the world to do so. Although he has hunted a lot, he has never been hunted until he washed up on shore of General Zaroff’s Island after falling off of his yacht. Rainsford, always thinking on his feet, kept his cool, and quickly swam in the direction of the gunshots he heard. “Where there are men there is food, he thought” (Connell 58). After getting to the Island, Rainsford was looking around and saw a small shiny object, he picked it up and realised it was an empty bullet cartridge, “A twenty-two” (Connell 58). Rainsford using his hunting knowledge thought that it was odd to be using such a small gun for such
It had been a week since Rainsford managed to kill the nefarious General Zaroff. The challenging part was almost over or so it seemed. There was not a clear way for Rainsford to escape. As days passed, Rainsford tried to escape. He tried making a boat from driftwood that he found, he tried swimming, he even tried sending a signal by using a flashlight. Rainsford had become so desperate that he even tried some ridiculous plans like trying to pole vault across the ocean. As a result, Rainsford ended up having huge gashes in his left leg ,which got infected, and he had to amputate it. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Rainsford had lost hope and became bitter.
Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" is a very exciting story of a manhunt. This story made me think about the morality of hunting: Humans are the cleverest creatures on earth, but does it give them a license to kill the other animals and even human beings weaker than themselves? I give below a short summary of the story to set the scene and then I will explore the ethics involved in hunting as a sport. "The Most Dangerous Game" presents the story of a hunter, General Zaroff, who finds hunting human beings as the most dangerous and fascinating sport.
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the author, Richard Connell, does an outstanding job of portraying the bizarre adventure of an insane, however experienced hunter, General Zaroff. The protagonist, Rainsford, another experienced hunter from New York City, appears on General Zaroff’s island, explores, and eventually encounters with Zaroff. They introduce themselves, settle down, and begin to talk. During the talk with the general, Rainsford soon learns that the General was not only a hunter; but a murderer as well. Zaroff has lured and ceased many sailors to his island to play a game. Although, they did not hunt with the General, the General hunted them! Zaroff claimed that hunting “had become too easy”, therefore, hunting began
Humans have been hunting for over 1.8 million years. Early humans were omnivores and hunted large animals. Not much has changed, as we still hunt today. In this story, it is a whole different game though...they hunt human beings. A main character, General Zaroff, is one of those people that hunts humans. He hunts Rainsford the other main character and is killed. The General’s place is taken by Rainsford. Rainsford becomes the new general of Ship Trap island. There are many theories to explain why this is true like he is more violent throughout the story and he is very similar to General Zaroff.
Imagine turning up on an island with a psychotic man, a man who hunts humans. This is what General Zaroff does, on Ship-Trap-Island. General Zaroff is a rich hunter who hunts most animals, even the most dangerous. This is the story written by Richard Connell, called The Most Dangerous Game, It is about a psychotic man with a hunting obsession. Once Zaroff gets bored with the hunting animals he turns to something new, humans. The author thinks that hunting is normal, that people have a killer instinct. That it is our human nature to hunt, and kill. The author also thinks that it is human nature to look for new challenges and to live strong. Much like Zaroff, the author believes life, is for the willing.
Hunting big game animals for sport was a popular pastime with the wealthy classes following World War I. The morality of killing for sport was not questioned in reality, but in this short story the author does question it by taking it a step further and having the protagonist, Sangor Rainsford, hunted by the antagonist, General Zaroff. In a short story full of irony, one of the greatest ironies of Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” is that General Zaroff repeatedly tells Rainsford that he maintains a sense of civilization on his island.
Resourcefulness is being able to overcome difficulties quickly and in a clever way. Resourcefulness can also be using one’s surroundings for his/her benefit with prior knowledge and experience. In Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the main character Rainsford shows these skills of resourcefulness as he tries to survive the hunt. Rainsford is an experienced big game hunter that is trapped on a tropical jungle covered island with another big game hunter, General Zaroff. Zaroff has gained so much experience in hunting, due to this he has lost interest in hunting animals and now enjoys the hunt of humans. Rainsford is put in the position to be torched or participate in a game of hunting. When Rainsford is challenged to this game of hunting he is forced to try and survive. Rainsford is able to survive the hunt because he uses his resources and prior knowledge to weaken Zaroff helping him win the hunt.
Now it is clearly visible that both men are very different but they still both ended up making the same mistakes to lead to a bigger event now we can see how they are different. Both hunters were very dedicated to hunting that was their life passion, they had both been on very many hunting trips throughout their life. But they both got bored with hunting small game they both wanted to hunt bigger, better, more dangerous game they both lived for the thrill. For example, in the text, General Zaroff said,”Hunting tigers ceased to interest me some years ago. I exhausted their possibilities, you see. No thrill left in tigers, no real danger. I live for danger, Mr. Rainsford.” (Connell 62) He also said in the story that, “Hunting was beginning to bore me!” (Connell 63). Eckels also wanted to hunt bigger, better, more dangerous game for example in the text, “ The Tyrant Lizard, the most incredible monster in history. Sign this release.
When many people think of hunting, they often think of searching through forests, jungles, and fields to find certain animals that they will stalk and then kill. However, Rainsford, a character in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, is forced to try a very different form of this sport invented by a mysterious man he meets on Ship Trap Island. General Zaroff, another character in this short story, traps people on his island and hunts with them by seeing if they can survive three nights and evade his attempts at killing them. Before arriving on this obscure island, Rainsford was already an experienced hunter, already heard of by quite a few people. After falling off his yacht and relying on his instincts to safely make it to
After falling off the ship, Rainsford swam in the direction of where he heard three gunshots come from. The first thing he notices as he reaches the rocks was the large animal that had went in the underbrush and the blood stained on a patch of weeds. Rainsford then finds a cartridge and realizes that the animal had been shot with a twenty-two. He went on his way looking for something to show him the way to where the “men” he suspected to be on the island were. Just as he was hoping, he found prints of hunting boots. These small details showing how alert, intelligent, and descriptive he is says a lot about the character
In the short story by Richard Connell, The Most Dangerous Game, Sanger Rainsford finds himself in a sticky situation when he meets General Zaroff. General Zaroff is a very talented hunter and had become tired of hunting the same old animals as always, they bored him as he explained in the story, he had now moved on to the best prey he could find, a prey that could fight and think for themselves, and that prey was humans. Rainsford is taken aback by this confession and is alarmed, he asks Zaroff to let him go, but Zaroff has other plans. In order for Rainsford to get off the island alive he must survive three full days on the island while being hunted by General Zaroff. Rainsford agrees, knowing that if declines this choice his life would have a much more unpleasant future. And so the the hunt began, but Rainsford had some tricks up his sleeve.
In this story “The Most Dangerous Game” By Richard Connell there is a General named Zaroff who was a hunter. Zaroff thought the the most dangerous game was hunting people. The man that was being hunted was named Rainsford. He had fallen off his ship, and swam to the island, and then found Zaroff. There are many parts in this story, and I wanted to tell you about it. Zaroff has done this “hunting” thing for many years. Now there is one man that is going to stop him.
“The Most Dangerous Game”,by Richard Connell is a short story about sanger Rainsford, an expert hunter. Rainsford falls off a yacht and ends up on “Ship Trap Island”,then is introduced to General Zaroff, who is also an expert hunter.Rainsford and General Zaroff talk about the game, and how it’s all about capital hunting. Rainsford finds out that the General stalks up the Island by trapping sailors and hunting them. In this paper, the characters of Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff will be compared, but their differences will also be discussed.
Rainsford heard a shot in the far distance and was curious about where it had come from, another shot came about and it had originated from Ship-Trap Island, Rainsford thoroughly paced himself to the edge of the yacht and wondered "Who could be on that Island?," a slight breeze had taken up Rainsford's cigar, and flew in the far distance to where Rainsford could no longer see where it had gone. Rainsford then fell off the deck and into the blood warming water and another shot had gone off, Rainsford paced himself to the shot and was now on Ship-Trap Island unconscious through the night. When he had woken up, he had found animal and human tracks and decided to follow them so Rainsford did. Rainsford met a tall man named General Zaroff who was very kind, respectful and well educated and also was a hunter. General Zaroff liked hunting humans and Rainsford had contemplated that was preposterous. General Zaroff and Rainsford had very different dissents about each others
There are survivors all around us, and they all could have faced grave challenges to be standing where they are today. Rainsford, in the "Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell, faced intense challenges in a "fight to the death" conflict against one of his most successful supporters, General Zaroff. Lee, from "My escape from North Korea" by Hyeonseo Lee, faced tough challenges while trying to escape the depths of a country that treated her horrendously. Aron Ralston, from "Trapped", a story explaining that Aron himself was hiking alone when the unthinkable happened: Two large, heavy boulders fell on his arm and he had to endure over a hundred painful hours of being trapped in between the two rocks until he did a self-amputation on the arm
